POV: itâs 2021 and you hear this mashup for the first time
(app: djay)
We live in an era where shows get canceled all the time, whether due to lack of funds or viewership or overall lack of interest, and while thatâs disheartening itâs at least understandable. But if a show that has high viewership, a ton of praise from both critics and audiences, a massive loyal fanbase, and the proven ability to make a ton of money and positive press for its production house but STILL gets canceled before the completion of its story, what does that say about other successful shows? What does that say to other writers and artists who want their stories to be told?
I could talk about Our Flag as a fan or a queer person or a neurodivergent person, but here I want to talk as a writer and amateur filmmaker. To a see a show like Our Flag get canceled despite doing everything right as far as doing what a production house or streaming service could want and still get canceled feels so disheartening. If well-respected professional filmmakers like David Jenkins and Taika Waititi can have their stories cut short on a whim, then what chance do my stories have? What chance does any aspiring creative have? The message that the untimely cancelation of Our Flag Means Death sends to young creatives is that, âThere is no point in trying to tell your stories, because even if you play the game and play it well, you could still lose and there is nothing you can do about it.â
I am asking for this to be proven wrong. I am asking for our stories to be told. I am asking to #renewasacrew
We are a dedicated group of "Our Flag Means Death" fans, all volunteers with no official ties to the series, on a mission to secure a third
I donât know if anyone has said this yet but-
The parallels are uncanny.
I meanâŚ.. đ
Oh god now that toh ends with luz being able to travel between worlds ppl are using that to dunk on amphibia. And now that belos died ppl are using that to dunk on su.
They are different shows people! They have different themes! Amphibia is a classic take on isekai as escapism! Marcy went to amphibia to avoid her real life and while she had fun she didnt mature until after she accepted she needed to embrace change in her life! Anne matured in amphibia bc she always recognized that she has her own life to get back to! Sasha matured after realizing that too! Leaving amphibia for good means to embrace the step out of childhood! Something thats inevitable for everyone!
The owl house is about finding a community in midst of ostracization! Luz stayed in the boiling isles because she found people who accepted her quirks! The boiling isles was in danger from a bigot and luz helps her new community defeat him! Its a very queer story! Community is the center of the story so it makes sense for luz to be able to go back to the boiling isles since shes maintaining her place in the community!
Steven universe is about choosing to be kind! Its that everyone has their own specific traumas that they can overcome with the right support! Its about surviving in a world of bigots at any cost, even if it you have to work with the bigots to carve out a space for the people you love! Because people like you exist and theres nothing anyone in power can do about it! Its also a very queer story! The diamonds can never stamp out the off colors because they will always be there! Steven works with the diamonds not because he likes them but because they can improve the world for his family if only he could get through to them! Hes rewarded for choosing to be kind with success because the theme of the show is hope! Hope that anyone can change! But even though the diamonds stop being fascist steven still doesnt like them because its not about forgiveness! Its about fixing things! Stevens just polite about it!
The owl house starts off with the assumption that everyone can change but its not about the potential its about the willingness to change! The focus is on belos, whos had every chance to turn his life around but will never admit that hes wrong! And the show posits that if someone isnt willing to change theyre not worth helping! Its not about whether or not the character is fascist its about if theyre willing to stop being fascist! Several characters stop being fascist and are welcomed by the characters with open arms belos just wasnt one of them! Several characters clean up their acts but dont adequately address the previous harm they did and are STILL fully forgiven eventually! For toh forgiveness is paired with fixing things you just need to give it time!
And theres an argument that some of these shows didnt do their themes well. If you wanted to portray amphibia as an escapism world that the girls need to leave behind to get to their richer futures then having them get such caring found families go against that by giving them a potential of a good life in the isekai world. Steven universe uses the diamonds as metaphors for mental illness and relationships but its hard to stick with that when you also need to consider the countless other gems they hurt. I think its also fair if people prefer one theme over another.
But a lot of stuff i see comparing these shows just go over surface similarities? Like oh shit! These two shows have the same character archetypes! They have the same inciting incident! This must mean that theyre exactly the same in everything but names and artstyle and are trying to say the exact same things! Like. No. Sometimes,,,,,two stories,,,,,,can talk about two different things,,,,,,,
one amazing thing about the Owl House finale is that it finally contextualized for me one of the central metaphors of the show. Spoilers for the series finale Watching and Dreaming ahead.
we good? no one spoiling themselves? beauty
for a long time now, I thought we had a pretty standard coming-of-age metaphor dichotomized by the show's central antagonists. you've got your protestant witch hunter Belos who introduces a maturity and ugliness to Luz's narrative; he clearly represents a particular, restricting form of adulthood, and just when Belos becomes his most threatening, boom, enter the Collector, Luz's dangerously naĂŻve inner child to ruin all her development on the Boiling Isles. Seems simple enough
what I didn't anticipate was just how specific and personal their roles in the story actually are to Luz once you have the full context from the series finale
look again
this story - this whole series - is about the grief that a neurodivergent kid experienced at a young age, introducing the cruelty of loss and adulthood before she was ready to handle it. and, how to reclaim a more whole understanding of herself as she rebuilds her life with people who get her
Belos is designed to infect the titan carcass like a disease. a cancer. it's super goddamn significant that the titan is King's dad (King, who became Luz's younger brother). they set up Belos not just to be another fascist kids' cartoon villain (although yeah, he do be doing some of that), but to specifically become a force that oppressed the weirdness from the one place that understood Luz. the Iles. the dad. And by the end of the story, Belos's goopy body-horror isn't just for show, he's just like the cancer or other terminal disease that took Luz's dad from her
he's the thing Luz hasn't processed in season 1 that comes in at the end like a warning. he's the threat that forces Luz to grapple with her own humanity, feeling somehow (often completely unjustifiably) harmful to those around her, through the grief she doesn't want to be a burden or the weirdness (neurodivergence) others don't understand. he's the force that says there is something wrong with you, Luz, give in to your grief, this is what you can't face. this is the lie you've been telling to those closest to you: that you're okay
then you have the Collector. (notable that he's a collector, and we see Luz's mom and dad had quite the collection of nerdy memorabilia)
the Collector is the child too young to understand death. Too young to understand consequences, or why their playmates don't feel like playing anymore with someone so weird and maybe a bit too involved in their own world. The Collector is Luz's inner child, that kid we see right before the "worst week ever" â the one who didn't and couldn't understand what was about to happen even as it was going down. unapologetically weird, a bit destructive and short-sighted, but wholly colourful, wholly themselves. that's why the Collector wants to live out Luz's adventures, but without all the depth. just the fun escapist fantasy
but don't think I forgot the internal conflict! :D
because Camila's role also gets an added depth too: Camila was framed at the outset of the series as someone who loved Luz, but wanted her to fit inside a box that she just didn't. later, Luz completely misconstrued her mom's breakdown when she learned that Luz chose to run away. as many people have pointed out by now, Luz misremembers the actual dialogue that Camila says: Camila only wanted her daughter safe, not to lose her. Luz meanwhile felt like she had to choose to destroy this part of herself, or give up her connection with her mom altogether
but we know now Camila actually deeply relates to Luz. she may not understand Luz's fascination with horrific things like on the boiling isles (very akin to a kid getting more grim hobbies in the wake of a death, like Luz's taxidermy), but she loves Luz for who she is. all of her. she never wanted Luz to change
Luz was the one framing the central conflict of the show as go back to her mom or stay in the boiling isles. Luz was the one who felt like she had to punish herself by rejecting the one place where she felt like herself. once Camila realizes what's been going on, and how deeply connected it is to the loss of Luz's dad, she knows Luz is trying to make a "very bad choice for herself." And she won't let that happen (what a great mom!!)
But Luz does have one real choice ahead of her
because of the inner child who once again has to confront death (this time, Luz's own), Luz is able to connect with a father figure, the titan, the one place she feels understood. in the form of a power-up that makes her into a fantasy witch straight out of the Good Witch Azura, the one place she got joy after that huge loss, the titan gives her the strength to face the cancerâa force draining everything good in her life from her and making her question she deserves it in the first placeâbut only if she can choose herself
and that means choosing happiness, choosing found family, choosing love and friendship and self-discovery in the place she feels most at home! every bond she's forged, everything she's worked for, it all comes down to choosing to face grief and move on in life with weirdos who stick together.
hoot hoot, that's some good metaphor
The plush under Collector's bed: A totally necessary analysis, trust me
For the Future Spoilers Below!!!!! Iâm sorry I canât figure out the read more function!
So what I love about String Bean is not only the shape shifting aspect, but that they match Luzâs hoodie!!
The ears! The color scheme! Itâs such a representation of Luz wanting and needing someone to understand and accept her as she is, quirks and all. đ
PJO fandom be like "it doesn't matter that actors are not real copies of book characters, the main thing is that their acting is on point + Rick chose them themselves and is very excited about their performance"
Also PJO fandom: LinđManuel𤎠Mirandađasđ Hermes đ¤Ż?! Tell me it's a jokeâ
Being confused and not 100% satisfied is okay. Insulting a good man and a great actor FUCKING ISN'T. I saw SO MANY hateful comments it's horrifying, remember not to be a piece of shit.
I swear I havenât seen one positive post about it besides this one and itâs kind of crushing

the THING about Oluwande is that his competence level is "night manager who has worked in this 24 hour McDonalds for 4 years and knows all possible McDonalds scenarios but outside work his life is not even a little bit together" and the thing about Jim is that their competence is "wildly experienced mechanic who can fix literally anything in the 24 hour McDonalds with a wrench and some duct tape but can't figure out how to heat up a burger without burning it" and the rest of the crew is "has been working in the 24 hour McDonalds for a maximum of two weeks, and doesn't know how to do anything". except Buttons, who is "has worked in this specific 24 hour McDonalds for 15 years, but still causes regular incidents any time he is at the cash register".
thereâs something that makes me very very emotional about the fact that the main asian actors in everything everywhere all at once came to the movie on very different trajectories - michelle yeoh is an internationally recognized legend of hk action cinema, ke huy quan starred in two blockbusters as a kid before being forced to step away from acting for 20 years, james hong is probably THE single most prolific actor in hollywood, and stephanie hsu has been on broadway and tv but never starred in a major film - and yet when all of them read the script they thought to themselves âyes, this is all iâve ever wantedâ
itâs about james hong being in a triumphantly empathetic film with asian leads after 70 years of watching the landscape for asian actors change with his own eyes, itâs michelle yeoh being taken seriously as a leading actress who can anchor a movie with both humor and heart, itâs ke huy quan getting to play all the roles he never got to play over the last two decades, itâs stephanie hsu bursting onto the scene as a rising star next to all these established actors by walking the path that they helped pave
and itâs not just the actors either! andy and brian le, the filmâs fight choreographers (and ahem trophy fight scene duo), learned martial arts by watching michelle yeohâs movies growing up. when ke huy quanâs stunt double first came to america, he learned english by watching ke huy quan in indiana jones. echo quan (the filmâs on-set translator) couldnât get work in hollywood for years despite having worked extensively in hong kong cinema and eeaao was her first job in the industry. the importance of the connections we form and the thrill of new possibilities and new lives are woven into the very fabric of this movieâs creation
SEASON 3 needs a CALL BACK TO SEASON 1â WHEN PENELOPE SAYS TO COLIN
âOne finds oneself in such an incredible position, and, well, one should declare it... assuredly, fervently, loudly."
like I expect nothing less than Colin declaring his love for Pen loudly
finally got some time for congratulations sketches
everyone keeps comparing Hilda to Gravity Falls, but hereâs my take.
Request for Steven Universe fans!
So Iâm taking a class called âHollywood and the Superheroâ where weâre doing media studies on what makes a superhero, why do we love/need superheroes, and what messages are portrayed through superhero movies.
My term paper is going to be about Steven Universe! We donât often see him as a superhero, per se, but I think he has enough qualities to qualify as one.
My request from you:
What clips from the shows or movie do you think are good examples of showing Stevenâs development as a superhero, and then in SUF, showing him trying to connect to his humanity?
I have crossed the horizon to find you I know your name They have stolen the heart from inside you But this does not define you This is not who you are You know who you are â¤ď¸
Iâve been waiting to find this!
