system in science here and the most frustrating thing about being in this community is the blatant science denial. most of the “plural” community has the audacity of your catholic relative who tries to guilt trip you into believing in god at thanksgiving.
i was talking about how CDDs work and how you can’t have parts without separation—AKA dissociation. there has to be dissociation to an extreme degree or there just can’t be the separation.
and then this person in the server starts talking about religion and that there are “ways to give yourself parts with spiritual practices.”
i have to deal a lot with creationism when i talk about the field i’m going into and i genuinely try to do it respectfully. i think there’s plenty of ways religion can interact with science that isn’t blatant denial of things like the big bang, dinosaurs, etc. yknow? religion has been around for thousands of years and isn’t going anywhere. removing religion still doesn’t get rid of thousands of years worth of cultural beliefs and customs either.
however if we’re talking about the human brain, we’re talking about science. if you are spreading blatant misinformation and ableism i am going to be rude because at the end of the day, it’s not fucking real.
i understand cultural interpretations of psychosis and dissociation. in some cultures, they might interpret their symptoms as a spiritual experience and there’s been plenty of papers about this that endogenics bring as “evidence.”
however there’s two possibilities:
1) a person is experiencing a CDD and genuine dissociative parts and are interpreting it in a cultural, religious, or spiritual context (ex. “the voices talking to me are angels”)
2) a person does not have dissociative parts or a CDD and is interpreting minor (sometimes voluntary) dissociation as parts through a cultural, spiritual, or religious lens (ex. “i meditated and gave myself an alter”)
as per no. 2, that doesn’t make them parts. you can call it a “walk in” from another universe, you can say it was a religious practice, and you can say it was a part you made on purpose with meditation. that doesn’t make it a separate part of you with a barrier from another part because there’s nothing actually separating it. you cannot deny the fucking laws of thermodynamics, time, and energy. the fact they come into spaces with discussions of the science behind these conditions with their bullshit shows how 1) they don’t have a CDD because they have no concept of the seriousness of one and 2) they don’t have the knowledge of academic writing to understand the outdated papers they pulled out of their ass. which is probably why they offer those papers up in the first place—they don’t actually fucking read them.
i want to be nice about it, but i’m sorry. it’s not fucking real. there is zero scientific basis behind any of their claims. there is no evidence of a god. there is no evidence of dimensional travel. absolutely fuck all. they can think they have genuine alters and interpret symptoms that might not even be there, but it doesn’t actually give them a system.
sorry for the book in your inbox. i am so fucking tired of these people coming into spaces where we talk about our condition, its treatment, and new studies being done. we are talking about the real, human brain, the mind, and how long term trauma can change it. i feel so fucking pretentious when speaking about it because i don’t want to come off as “oh i’m in college so i know more than you,” but i need to word vomit this out somewhere.
