Hi! I’m curious what your favorite fic, completed or WIP, you’ve written is!
Ah! This is such a difficult question! I had to think on it for a couple days because at first I really wasn't sure which one of my fics to pick (they really all are a labor of love).
My initial knee-jerk answer was Taming of the Shrew, but only because I tend to hyperfocus on whichever fic I've worked on/published most recently. So usually the comments/kudos I treasure the most are on my WIPs simply for that reason.
But on further exploration of my feelings in regards to my 18 children... I'd have to pick The Intervention. It's my longest fic thus far, still very much a WIP (we're only in fifth year 😭), and truly a Herculean effort for me. I feel like it's my attempt to bring something new to the fandom--a Tom who retains his darker instincts and brilliance, but also one who holds his trauma close to his chest, wears his cockiness like an armor, who yearns for connection but often fumbles through awkward (and sadly hilarious) attempts at it, and who feels the same pressure as any other teen to fit in and belong, which is completely at odds with his desire to stand out as unique and special.
It really is a canon rewrite through and through, and it takes a lot of effort to think through how everyone would react to and change because of Tom's sudden presence in the Golden Trio timeline. Not just Hermione, Ron, Harry, and Dumbledore--but everyone! Down to Pansy freaking Parkinson. 😏😂
A lot of brain power gets devoted to this fic! I'm so lucky Pearlita decided to hop on board and agree to beta a few chapters ago, because it really helps to bounce ideas off of someone who feels just as passionately about this story as I do!
And just because I'll be pinning this ask, here's a complete list of my runner-up favorites and why:
Vroom Vroom: Get in the Car, We're Getting Messy - Tom is the head of the Mafia, Hermione is a law student desperate for a recommendation letter. (I promise the two things are related! Pure funny wackiness. If you liked the movie Baby Driver, hopefully you'll like this!)
Billable Hours - The One Where Everyone Sucks. (Truly, they are all evil villains. Romione with a Tomione twist!)
Magical Love in Nonmagical Spaces - rare pair Cho/Dudley! Pure fluff.
Mustela furo - a short, funny, light-hearted dramione set in eight year.
The Professor - my only Sevmione, but I love their ship and I love Snape! Funny, a bit dark, and I gave them a happy ending! 🥹
Finally, we have Secret Games, a fic that was heavily inspired by B&G (not necessarily plot, but the vibes) and Jörmungandr (I will wait for you a thousand years honeyskeleton!!!!!), one that kept me up at night for a long time, and one that still makes me tear my hair out. If I didn't have my brilliant beta writing_bynumbers to encourage me to continue, I think I would have given up long ago. The ending is what I can't decide on, but I'm being told not to push too hard for an HEA if it doesn't make sense... (I want desperately for it to be an HEA). Also, my writing has changed so much over the past three years that I feel like if you binge it all in one go you can definitely tell the difference in the quality. I still care deeply about this story; it was my first attempt at a redeemable Tom, and I'm determined to slog on!
Thanks for the ask, anon :) I'm sure my answer was a lot longer than you bargained for! 😬😂🤪
