Based on the state of my notes, I need to do some weeding. So.

Aro, ace, and aroace people are queer.

Queer is not any more of a slur than the word “gay.”

You do not need to experience dysphoria to be trans.

You do not need to medically transition to be trans.

Nonbinary people are trans.

Self-diagnosis is valid, and opposing self-diagnosis is racist, sexist, and classist.

Queer people in “het” relationships are still queer and belong at Pride.

In fact, a relationship cannot possibly be “het” if someone involved is queer, even if it looks “het” on the surface.

Trans men do not experience the same level of societal privilege as cis men because, surprise, they still experience transphobia.

(this doesn’t mean that trans men get a free pass on misogyny, however, or that we don’t need to acknowledge the way trans men are often given more space than trans women)

Using a nonbinary person’s assigned gender and/or gender presentation to divide them into “basically men” or “basically women” is transphobic as fuck.

Sex work is real work.

BDSM is not anti-feminist.

Narcissistic personality disorder (NPD) does not make someone inherently abusive.

Lacking empathy does not make someone inherently abusive.

ABA “therapy” is abuse.

Donald Trump is a symptom of a much larger problem.

Captialism is a blight upon society.

There has never been a good president. 

Being marginalized does not give you a magical free pass on bigotry.

Being childfree is great, being an asshole to parents and children is unacceptable.

Atheism is not morally superior to theism, and a large number of atheists use “rationality” as an excuse to be racist toward Jewish people and Muslims, among others.

Painting bigotry as something only “rednecks” perpetuate is classist as all hell and you should stop doing it. 

Bigotry is not going to magically end when the baby boomers die off.

push yourself to get up before the rest of the world - start with 7am, then 6am, then 5:30am. go to the nearest hill with a big coat and a scarf and watch the sun rise.

push yourself to fall asleep earlier - start with 11pm, then 10pm, then 9pm. wake up in the morning feeling re-energized and comfortable.

get into the habit of cooking yourself a beautiful breakfast. fry tomatoes and mushrooms in real butter and garlic, fry an egg, slice up a fresh avocado and squirt way too much lemon on it. sit and eat it and do nothing else.

stretch. start by reaching for the sky as hard as you can, then trying to touch your toes. roll your head. stretch your fingers. stretch everything.

buy a 1L water bottle. start with pushing yourself to drink the whole thing in a day, then try drinking it twice.

buy a beautiful diary and a beautiful black pen. write down everything you do, including dinner dates, appointments, assignments, coffees, what you need to do that day. no detail is too small.

strip your bed of your sheets and empty your underwear draw into the washing machine. put a massive scoop of scented fabric softener in there and wash. make your bed in full.

organise your room. fold all your clothes (and bag what you don’t want), clean your mirror, your laptop, vacuum the floor. light a beautiful candle.

have a luxurious shower with your favourite music playing. wash your hair, scrub your body, brush your teeth. lather your whole body in moisturiser, get familiar with the part between your toes, your inner thighs, the back of your neck.

push yourself to go for a walk. take your headphones, go to the beach and walk. smile at strangers walking the other way and be surprised how many smile back. bring your dog and observe the dog’s behaviour. realise you can learn from your dog.

message old friends with personal jokes. reminisce. suggest a catch up soon, even if you don’t follow through. push yourself to follow through.

think long and hard about what interests you. crime? sex? boarding school? long-forgotten romance etiquette? find a book about it and read it. there is a book about literally everything.

become the person you would ideally fall in love with. let cars merge into your lane when driving. pay double for parking tickets and leave a second one in the machine. stick your tongue out at babies. compliment people on their cute clothes. challenge yourself to not ridicule anyone for a whole day. then two. then a week. walk with a straight posture. look people in the eye. ask people about their story. talk to acquaintances so they become friends.

lie in the sunshine. daydream about the life you would lead if failure wasn’t a thing. open your eyes. take small steps to make it happen for you.

This is all really good advice for dealing with long term depression and anxiety. It’s not gonna magically cure you, but I’ve pushed myself to incorporate a few of these things into my day to day routine and it helps

^That’s not actually correct. No one put pants on an otter. The situation you are thinking of went like this. Keepers give their animals all sorts of things for enrichment. It usually has to be approved by vets/supervisors first. Some keepers at that facility gave their otters a pair of pants thinking they would shred them and use them as bedding for nesting. But tragically the otter got stuck in one of the legs and drowned. Now, it was an accident, a tragic one, we all just want the best for our animals and many other facilities have learned from that one’s mistake. This picture was taken at a different facility and the otter wearing the sweater was in a supervised training session where he is reinforced for holding still and letting us put things on his back. This can relate to husbandry in many ways. Putting ice packs on backs, putting towels on them to wipe something off, towels on heads to remove visual stressors, etc. Moral of the story. Don’t blurt out dumb assumptions about otters wearing pants.

I’m tired of using my spinner in public and getting dirty looks or mocking laughter. I’m tired of it being a Thing, where people either give me shit or treat it as an invitation to talk about What A Good Ally They Are.

I’m tired of accessibility and accommodation being treated like a gag.

“So which is worse?”

You want an answer. I know. But there isn’t one. Being low and being high are equally as bad. You don’t really understand what you’re asking so you keep asking; not liking my answer. Not satisfied.

You’re not asking if I’d rather be high or low. You’re asking: Shaking or thirst? Numbness or pin pricks? Seizures or losing limbs? Can’t make a fist because you don’t have the energy or can’t make a fist because its painful? Cold or stiff? Not being able to write because I can’t focus on my own thoughts or because holding the pen physically hurts me? Death or death?

I’m dying either way. I can’t function either way. Either way I don’t want to get out of bed.

So why does it matter which is worse? Which feels worse?

to elaborate: bunnies are prey animals and almost never have their guard down– even when they’re resting they’ll usually have their back legs in a position that allows them to quickly run away. if they’re jumping around it means they’re extremely happy!! and if they flop down w/o a care that means they feel very very comfortable and safe to the point of not having to worry about their surroundings. ^__^

What Diabetes Is

Ever since the unicorn frappucino was released, I’ve seen an uptick in “diabeetus” jokes. I’ve also seen people posting pictures of candy and cake and saying “Look at my diabeetus ha ha ha,” as if diabetes is some type of joke.

Diabetes is not a frappucino. There is no such thing as “diabetes on a plate” or “diabetes in a cup.” Let me tell you what diabetes actually is.

Diabetes is a small child dying of ketoacidosis because the doctor in the ER thought that child had the flu.

Diabetes is parents who can’t sleep through the night because they have to get up and check their child’s blood sugar during the night to make sure their child hasn’t gone into insulin shock or diabetic coma.

Diabetes is waking up in the middle of the floor covered in bruises and rug burn because you fell asleep after taking insulin but before eating the food that you took the insulin for, and your blood sugar crashed, causing you to fall off the couch and have a seizure.

Diabetes is having to decide whether there is enough insulin to last until you get paid or whether you will skip a meal or two so that you can take less insulin and save money on groceries.

Diabetes is not getting enough sleep because your blood sugar was too high, meaning that you got out of bed to go to the bathroom multiple times, or too low, meaning that you got out of bed to treat the low and then stayed awake to be sure it didn’t go low again.

Diabetes is going to a trendy eating place and discovering they don’t serve diet drinks because “aspartame is poison” and having them tell you to drink orange juice instead.

Diabetes is finding out that your kidneys or eyesight or digestive system or circulation is failing after you’ve lived with the disease for decades.

Diabetes is having people say “So lose weight and it will go away” or “Your kid got that because you fed them too much sugar”.

Diabetes is living every day with a disease that you know could shorten your lifespan while politicians blame people who have your disease for costing the health care system money, as if it’s your fault your immune system decided to attack you.
