shane is really good at poker that it’s like a thing where every off the books team bonding hang they play poker and the metros are always in awe at how shane wins every time and word gets around the nhl players and eventually when shane gets to the centaurs and he’s well settled in and happy with his husband they have a team bonding and it gets brought up about the rumour of hollzy being a shark at poker and so they all start playing and ilya doesn’t play but watches and loves the confidence and careful but cocky attitude of shane and insert image into your brain of drunk centaur players perched around a table with captain ilya rozanov sitting in shane hollanders lap and shane has his arms around ilyas waist with both hands clutching his cards and he’s relaxed and looks like a fucking mobster king with his trophy wife husband sitting on his lap as he bets his rolex without a second thought
omggggg
that kitty really went
It’s actually so fascinating watching its eyes expand and dilate
i think people are starting to confuse class analysis with bioessentialism. like... no not all men do this, but Men as a constructed social class do do this. that's still okay to say. that is regular material analysis of the world around us.
I FOUND THE TWEET THAT GOT ME TO WATCH PRIDE AND PREJUDICE
Zoot suits look kinda stupid but I gotta respect the cultural context & symbolism of the things
"Fuck the military and fuck the war, look at all this good uniform-worthy fabric I'm wasting on a fuckoff giant suit" is a very solid basis for a subculture
I actually really love to talk about zoot suits and their associated subcultures. The amount that the silhouettes of the zoot suit have shaped american fashion and trends of oversized clothes is so understated. And, yk, I'm biased as hell, but it is kinda crazy how influential zoot suit culture was
I always love the og zoot suits made by black americans in Harlem, I really like looking at the changes from these clothes from the 30s to some of the more exaggerated renditions from the 40s. It's also so interesting to look at how fast the subculture spread, and especially in the american west integrated with mexican diaspora and pachuco culture to the point that that's what a lot of usamericans associate them with.
⬆️ long wallet chains and pork pie hats were classic accessories for mexican diaspora zoot suiters. Zoot suits/their components were also really popular with women and were a way to symbolize independence and a choice to move away from strict gender roles on top of the existing countercultural message ⬇️
Anyways it's kind of impossible to talk about zoot suits without mentioning the racism and violence that followed them. On top of a zoot suit making someone a target for individual racial violence, the national reaction of white america to zoot suit culture was part of the beginning of clothing and presentation being read explicitly as signals by police and justice systems, and the broad association of youth of color with gang violence through this specific excuse. Gang culture and how it's percieved in the western US and especially California is very influenced by this era. The most famous events from the zoot suit era are the collective zoot suit riots and the media characterization of all mexican american, filipino american, and black american youth as violent anti-american baby gangsters. Which, even if that was broadly true I mean. I'll take the opportunity to be flippant hell yeah??
As a side note, while making more new zoot suits during war rationing was pretty sick, most people weren't buying from the black market tailor shops and just wore what they already owned because the style had been popular for years already. People bought clothes less often to begin with back then. I think that misconception comes from the reasoning white americans gave to go beat up people of color with baseball bats in the street; i.e. it was racial and xenophobic violence to begin with and the nature of the suits themselves has been mushed around a lot to serve different narratives.
More zoot suits! ⬇️
They can definitely look kinda goofy- mostly the exaggerated cuts and badly tailored modern recreations- but like you said you gotta respect them.
"The ultimate in clothes. The only totally and truly American civilian suit" - Cab Calloway
i love absorbing iwtv content exclusively from the dash because you could tell me literally ANYTHING was going on in that show and i'd be like that tracks with what i've seen. they're all actors in a play together. they had a lesbian daughter but there were custody issues and i think she died in a plane crash or something it's really tragic. one of them isn't even real he's just a long-term hallucination the other one has been having. they opened up their marriage to include a third guy who's hot and even more evil. the two guys and their third are all sleeping with a journalist who used to be young and is now old. after they got divorced one of them decided to reinvent himself as iggy pop and i think that's a perfectly fine way to cope.
my controversial opinion is I don’t think Zuko was confused by “my first girlfriend turned into the moon”
he was there during siege of the North. he infiltrated the spirit oasis. he has an uncle who studies spirits and the spirit world. he watched the sky go dark then the moon suddenly reappear like everyone else in the entire world did. and most importantly he watched zhao get eaten by a giant godzilla fish spirit.
his entire life since he saw that beam of blue-white light in the south pole has been ‘this day has already been so goddamn weird’
The only really new information was that that was Sokka’s girlfriend
Important opinion in the tags that I need to have be part of the post:
Also, Iroh was there? He literally watched Sokka make out with the moon spirit. And you want to tell me that a romantic sap like him would not have immediately told Zuko about this romantic tragedy? Please, Zuko has known about this for ages, he just knows that this is not an acceptable situation in which to say “yeah, I know.”
Sokka: “My girlfriend turned into the moon.”
Zuko: “I know.” “Yes.” “She sure did.” “Uh huh.” “Tell me something new.” “Are we still talking about that?” “That’s rough, buddy.”

one out of the many things i really love about discworld is how deeply unlikable the watch is in non watch books. that might seem a strange thing to say but if you've read the books you know what im talking about. its such a simple yet effective way of showing the multitudes any organization has, but especially one that's enforcing a system or law. i mean, think about it, when reading the watch books the only people you're rooting for is the watch themselves, everyone loves sam and carrot and angua, they're all our favorites!! but when you come to face w them in other books like, say, the truth or going postal or unseen academicals, you're suddenly not as keen on them. because why are they interfering w william, who's just trying to do the right thing and why can't they just leave moist alone, who's just trying to survive (albeit by not always lawful means, but if you choose to read a terry pratchett book im sure you've already gotten over that) and why are they so distrusting of trev, who was really just trying to save his friend? well, obviously, because it's their job. and when they're doing that job in the watch books it all seems justified and necessary, but when seen through civilian eyes, they're just annoying bastards with bad case of entitlement issues. and terry MEANT for you to feel that. lets look at another example. we like william very much in his book, he hasn't got the best background but he spends the whole book and after making up for it. but when we meet him in, say, monstrous regiment, he's kinda just pretentious and posh and when moist mentions him in making money he doesn't seem to be universally liked. terry is not precious with his characters, he doesn't coddle them, and thats what makes them so real.
Stole this from somewhere but i think it’s appropriate
Imagine Grace defined his name as the elegance definition of grace and Rocky spends years thinking how fucking ironic this clumsy leaky space blobs name is.
Until Grace slips out a sentence along the lines of "could you give me a little grace here" and Rocky immediately points out he used a word wrong so Grace has to explain that yeah, grace means elegance but it can also mean mercy sometimes too.
And Rocky has to suddenly reconcile that the clumsy leaky blob that saved his life twice, that almost certainly doomed himself to come back for him, name is Mercy.
Tell me: is he's allowed to say that?? If you turn on the volume, you will hear his words.
I've seen plenty of people talking about how we see Murderbot's been growing and healing in Platform Decay as it's actually installed a mental health module (!) and does regular emotion checks (!!), but I have yet to see anyone talk about another huge indicator of Mb's growth: not wanting to give its humans a gun because it's afraid that shooting people will give them trauma!!! What a huge change from previous books, where it repeatedly stated that it didn't like nearby humans to have guns because they might shoot it, even by accident while trying to help. To me that's huge!
i believe that one of the penalties shane gets a lot is unsportsmanlike conduct. in the nhl, this penalty can be issued for players who argue or challenge the refs calls. now, captains are allowed to discuss a call and rule interpretations with a ref, but you gotta be cordial.
shane “hockeytism” hollander HATES when a ref makes a bad call. this is literally your job and youre fucking it up?? that was not slashing are you blind?? he gets heated about this, even when he’s just watching a random game. he’s shouting and cursing and making a well-informed case for why the ref is wrong.
hockey refs are notoriously bad so i guarantee shane gets into it a lot. i do think he knows when to quit so he doesnt get an unnecessary penalty but sometimes the call is so bad he cant help but be furious. his teammates have had to physically restrain him on the bench multiple times so he didnt hop the boards and scream at them.
