What are your views of drugs and alcohol? Do you think it's always a sin to get drunk? Is marijuana a generally bad thing? Just wondering how you think about mood/mind altering substances in relation to how we should live ethically/morally/lovingly/in Christ-like ways.
Biblically speaking, I don’t particularly see Jesus, who was described as a drunkard and a glutton (Matthew 11:19), as particularly concerned about substance intake. “What goes into someone’s mouth does not defile them, but what comes out of their mouth, that is what defiles them” (Mattew 15:11).
Sometimes things that go into the mouth can cause sinful behaviors. I think that mind-altering substances cannot and should not excuse someone’s behavior. What one might do when they are intoxicated can be harmful and sinful. But I don’t think the act of intoxication, in it of itself, is sinful.
I think addiction is horrible because it ultimately hurts those who are addicted… but I think to call it a “sin” is dehumanizing to those who are in recovery. Addiction, to me, is more akin to illness.
I think marijuana isn’t generally a bad thing. When I am taking it… I feel considerably much less anxious and suicidal. I think marijuana can be helpful for those suffering PTSD, depression, seizures, cancer, and other illnesses. There is a lot of racism tied in with the demonization of marijuana… and it has led to a ridiculous amount of PoC in the US prison system. I am all for the legalization of the drug.
Thanks for the response. I have often thought of “intoxication” or “drunkenness” (whether it’s alcohol, pot, or whatever) as akin to gluttony--there might be occasions where eating A TON is alright (at least I know I eat an awful lot at Thanksgiving and other times like that) and so there could be comparative occasions where quite a few alcoholic beverages can be enjoyed in a celebratory way (maybe like Jesus giving more wine to the wedding guests after three days of partying). Of course “excess” should be avoided, but that might be different for different people. And any addiction or hint of addiction should be dealt with. I just hope that I am not unreasonably justifying something that church tradition has generally been against.

It is not true that large numbers of people reject Christian faith – if by ‘reject’ we mean that they deliberately consider and then decide against it. They are imperceptibly shunted towards a position where the ‘default setting’ is a conviction that traditional Christianity has nothing much to be said for it. People who have settled down in this position are not likely to be much moved by argument; they need to be surprised into a realization that they have never actually reckoned with what Christianity is about.
