There comes a point in some abusive relationships where the victim wakes up out of their Stockholm syndrome and learns that they need to plan an escape. My fellow musicians of color: it is time to accept that we are in an abusive relationship with classical music.

Classical music has been an integral part of my life from the age of 4. If you have not studied the composers of classical music at least in passing you are missing out on some AMAZING stories. Beethoven being entirely deaf by 44 yet still living for his art and his music. Mozart being just a boy of 10-11 and replaying the sacred Austrian anthem BY MEMORY and then admitting that “he cheated” because he had to listen to it played twice, not just once, to get it absolutely perfect. Joseph Haydn who’s poor parents gave him and his brothers everything they could because of their musical gifts. Felix and Fanny Mendelssohn, Franz Liszt. “White people” DO HAVE CULTURE and they do have tradition. And this music is definitely a part of Austrian and German and European history. Austria is STEEPED in music. I can’t even BEGIN to get into the amazing Russian composers–some of their life stories and their music. It’s just GORGEOUS and stunning and cultural. Every inch of it. 

Classical music is just the tip of an incredible (and beautiful, and stunning) iceberg of tradition and folklore and culture. Learn it, research it, and then get back to me on this ROT AND NONSENSE.

This is like that time my kid told me that science was for boys and I was like, “You were literally sitting next to me sitting the organic chemistry review. That’s science. I’m a scientist.”

I never saw an unconscious bias change so fast. Not only was science for girls, but she seemed to think we (as in all girls everywhere) were very generous for allowing boys to participate in it from time to time.
