This was the crossword puzzle in the New York Times yesterday.Â
Tausigâs crossword is a so-called Schrödinger puzzle, named for the physicistâs hypothetical cat that is at once both alive and dead. In a Schrödinger puzzle, select squares have more than one correct letter answer: They exist in two states at once. âBlack Halloween animal,â for example, could be both BAT or CAT, yielding two different but perfectly correct puzzles. Only 10 such puzzles have now been published in Times history.
Itâs the theme of Tausigâs puzzle, though, that makes it special. Four entries in Thursdayâs crossword can include either an âFâ or an âM.â Both are correct; neither is wrong. For example, âPart of a houseâ can be either ROOF or ROOM. The long ârevealerâ answer, tying those select entries together and spanning 11 squares smack-dab in the middle of the puzzle, is GENDER FLUID.
This puzzle, with âMâs and âFâs that arenât fixed, is a masterful blend of subject and structure. âIt potentially really evokes what gender fluidity is, which is not moving back and forth between two poles, but actually not being committed to either pole, and potentially existing in many states at different times,â Tausig said.
This is ⊠really cool.
i never really thought of crossword puzzles as an art form, but like⊠this is art.
a crossword puzzle based on schrodingersâ cat??? a phYSICS CONCEPT??? sign me tf up i love everything about this
Someone probably told a crossword maker they couldnât possibly be nerdier, and they said, âHold my 14-across.â
Art has many forms. Boy I was surprised how nerdy art can be.

if youâre offline or away and i message you something (like a link to a meme or a picture or w/e) honestly just assume that iâm just leaving it there for when you get back and not expecting you to answer straight away. i donât need you to respond with âhey, sorry, i wasnât at the computer!â or anything. i was leaving u a gift for later.
This also applies if youâre online and just donât want to or have the energy to deal with humans in the moment. Just because we have the ability to reply in real time does not mean we have the obligation.
im like a cat i drag the posts to ur doorstep and if ur not there itâs ok, the post will be on ur porch for later
