you can love a character and still admit when they’re wrong. i love jason todd but i can acknowledge his flaws (he has none) & i can hold him accountable for his wrongdoings (he’s never done anything wrong in his life) & call him out for his actions (which are always correct)!

I’m still working my way through my reading list, but at this point, I wouldn't even be surprised if Bruce told Jason to his face that his death was his own fault. In fact, I’m surprised he hasn’t done it yet. Badmouthing him while he was dead is one thing, but the way people treat him after his resurrection makes me sick. I don’t get their definition of "brutally betrayed and murdered," most of the time they just ignore and never mention about his death, which is actually the best-case scenario compared to, say, putting a crowbar in his bed or bringing him back to the place where he died. I mean, we don’t exactly have a standard manual for how to treat a murder victim… but surely not this? Surely not turning it into something to mock, exploit, or trivialize? People wouldn't treat someone's negative experiences that way, let alone their actual death.

Honestly, I can picture Bruce and Jason arguing about something completely unrelated, with Bruce suddenly shouting, "You died because you didn't follow my orders!" and Jason replying, "Yeah, sure! But that’s not the point here!" Like he’d just accept it and move right back to the topic at hand. Neither of them, Jason or Bruce would realize there’s anything wrong with that. I mean, seriously, we’ve come so close to that already. Bruce once told Jason he got killed for treating things like a game (back when he didn't know it was Jason), and Jason was just like, "haha are you trying to distract me." He can handle whatever the fuck Bruce throws at him. In fact, he actually think so and said it himself that it was his fault because he "went out on his own" (and it made me sick.)

Actually, I think there was something similar to this already, when Damian told Jason "you failed you" and "he gave you a simple order and you couldn't follow it" and Jason just simply didn't react to that. He just skipped through that.

There’s an interesting thing that happens when you try to discuss Jason Todd’s death in the Batman fandom. It’s an art form, really. Perfected by Bruce glazers in taking something horrifyingly devastating about Jason’s storyline and completely de-centering him from it.

You talk about how a child never received closure for his murder because of one man actively standing between him and his justice. (Something verifiable through his actions.) You’ll be hit with: “But look at how SAD Bruce is. This is such a TRAGIC thing that happened to him. It BROKE him entirely.” (Immediate pivot to Bruce and HIS emotions.)

The problem isn’t that these statements are false. Bruce IS sad. It DID break him. The problem is that this is the only framing of the event acceptable to glazers. 1. A framing that centers Bruce. 2. A framing that shoves Bruce’s concrete actions aside and focuses on his feelings instead. As if the two hold equal weight.

Bruce’s grief and guilt is presented as charity for Jason’s justice. His sadness is pushed as the closure Jason never received. “Look how much he suffers”. A tormented conscience for a dead child. A fair trade.

And it’s not just Jason. They do this with every victim. Bruce’s intent is always weighed heavier than his actions. But the same grace is never extended to anyone else. Jason’s anger at being failed is irrational. It’s over the top. It’s too much. It’s repetitive. Move on. Bruce loved him, didn’t he? He cried, didn’t he? Isn’t that enough? That promise of a feeling that you can’t measure?

But grief isn’t justice. it doesn’t override justice. it’s not placeholder for justice. using it to excuse inaction and lack of accountability is pathetic <3

Bruce didn't teach Jason how to have a moral compass!

Jason already had it!

He knew stealing tires was wrong, he knew he was committing a crime, but he knew it was the only way to survive given his circumstances!

He runs away from Ma Gunn's school because she was teaching them how to be criminals! He didn't want to become a professional thief, he just needed enough money for necessities.

And goes after them when they try to steal jewels from the museum! He didn't know if Batman was gonna come and he didn't care, he knew what they were doing is wrong, so he wanted to stop them! Jason didn't think Batman believed him, but he believed in himself enough to sneak into the museum and try to stop Ma Gunn.

So this idea of Jason 'being born a criminal' and how him turning into a crime lord being inevitable is clearly incorrect. Even after this issue - his first Pre-Crisis appearance btw - there are multiple times where Jason has shown his ability to tell the difference between right and wrong.

It's very weird that you think Jason is incapable of understanding morality just because he was born in Crime Alley. It's weird that you think that he was some heathen who committed crimes for fun and not for survival. It's weird that you think that him committing a crime makes him a complete immoral being. It's weird that you think a rich man 'saved' him by teaching him the error of his ways when he was already conscious of it. It's weird that you think that because he was born to a father who turned to enforcing to make money for his family and a mother who developed a drug addiction, he was destined to be a criminal, that all of his choices are indicative of this ontological evil that grows inside of him.

Stop letting hindsight inform your understanding of Jason before and during his time as Robin. Jason becoming Red Hood wasn't inevitable, it's the crux of his story, his character, and its tragedy.

this is always the problem. someone tells jason (in canon and fanon) that bruce is trying, that bruce is doing his best-- framing their issues like it's jason's fault because he refuses to bend and buckle. they try to act like jason just needs to meet bruce halfway and it's his unwillingness to acknowledge that bruce is "trying" that's keeping their relationship so tense

but bruce ISNT trying. this is what he said before barbara said that:

bruce isn't trying because his solution is to make JASON try harder. bruce is saying the easy part-- simply telling jason to leave behind his vigilante identity, which isn't even a compromise because he expects jason to do what he alone wants. JASON has to try to actually leave it behind, to maintain a new one, to go back to the bat way of doing things. that's all on jason. bruce saying he'll help him find a better path means nothing because he isn't gonna be doing any of the heavy lifting.

what is the point of his apology if it means dust? all he says over and over in various comics is i'm sorry i failed you. okay, great. now what are you gonna do to actually make it up to jason because so far, you've only failed him further.

every time, jason is framed as the unreasonable one, like bruce is some kind of toddler and jason's being a big meanie by refusing to play games with him. why should the burden to fix their relationship be solely on jason? why should bruce "trying" be enough for jason?

bruce is not trying to fix shit if his solution is to make jason do everything while he gets to sit back and enjoy the end result. batman means everything to bruce to the point where his real relationships are impacted by it because he refuses to let go of that identity. yet he expects jason to let go of the red hood when the red hood means everything to jason.

yeah so i covered up my son's death because it would have inconvenienced me...yeah by doing this i basically ruined all chances of someone pursuing justice for him legally...yeah im rich as hell and could have definitely not done this and instead gotten the murderer convicted. yeah no i covered it up instead. anyway so my son is back now :/ and he wants to kill the guy who murdered him but that's like really immature... well what do i expect him to do? what?? why are you even asking this :| obviously he should be fine with the guy breaking out of arkham on a routine basis :/ hell, he should get justice through legal means! doesn't he know only i can dictate when it's moral to break the law?
