   It was very strange to see Kaiba. It was strange enough to see Joey but this somehow was even more-so, considering their previous encounter. He had come to terms with the fact that he would be leaving them behind and knowing them made him so happy… but they were not his to keep. There was something deeply troubling about seeing Kaiba and others again, as though he would have to experience the heart ache of accepting his own departure all over again. Part of him couldn’t believe it, or that somehow this must be all a strange Kaiba-Corp induced hallucination and he was still most certainly dead and this was some cruel trick to allow some sort of further solace and closure that he believed they no longer required. 

   ….

              oh, yes, that sounds much like Kaiba.

   Clearly deflating, yet another reunion that clearly did not live up to his ridiculous expectations, he sighed. “I am supposed to be, yes, and yet here I stand before you and in my very own flesh none the less.” It was still strange speaking with Kaiba at all and not having Yugi in his head or… he supposed it was Yugis head to begin with, but… well, that wasn’t important. “I thought that perhaps you would know something about that…. being that we’re apparently neighbors! How exciting.”

    The fact that Atem almost looks disappointed with him is really... irritating, in a way. Irritating that he even cares about it, and that he doesn’t really understand what the look is for, either-- it’s a lot of emotion to have and to contain all at once behind his carefully stone cold expression, raising an eyebrow rather smugly at the specific wording of his statement. “Is that so? No more hitch hiking around in someone else’s meat suit for you, huh? That must be convenient.” He’s very snide for a moment, settling... somewhat from the sheer shock of even seeing Atem at all that still itches just underneath his skin when he goes and lays another surprise down on him. 

        Neighbors...

    “Excuse me? We’re apparently what?” No. No, that can’t possibly be happening... Atem even being here at all is bizarre, let alone the idea of him living in close proximity to him-- and if Atem is there then it must be someone else equally, if not even moreso, living with him... his skin crawls at the very idea of who else it could possibly be, or at any of that merry band of buffoons knowing exactly where he lives, let alone having the ability to reasonably try and visit him there whenever they please. “You’re just going to have to move.” No...?

   Holding several bags in hand, he had clearly just spent far too much money clothes shopping, reveling in the fact that he can dress in a modern society and only choose his own styles rather than also having to fit into Yugis style (they have the same fucking style anyways.) He was stopped in his tracks when he notices a very familiar, simply iconic coat in the elevator and slips into the same elevator with a grin.

   ominous…… “Kaiba, it has been far too long, hasn’t it?” At least he had seen him more recently than the others of his time considering….. Kaiba went back in time to duel him and all….

    There’s not a lot of things that really catch Kaiba offguard... not the presence of another person in the elevator, which he ignores following him as someone who surely isn’t worth his time. He’s not particularly interested in acknowledging the other person at all at first, but... the voice is uncomfortably familiar, chasing a shiver down his spine that he’s careful not to show. It shouldn’t be possible-- no matter how long he’d spent believing it was possible, or how long he’d spent making it possible (at least in some sense, in some way), the fact remains that it shouldn’t be. Some things were meant to end once and for all, and it’s better if they do...

    Even with his gaze still so single mindedly focused on one long gone figure, a part of him had understood that it was better to let it all come to an end. That moving on was a difficult task, and that this matter should be buried with Atem when he’d returned from a duel only Seto Kaiba could have made possible to begin with-- that only he could be so doggedly hyper fixated on achieving as to go so far as to break into the boundaries of the afterlife to do so-- once and for all. Seeing him now is like scratching at an old wound that just refuses to heal, awash in a wave of something that’s... almost like relief, a gladness to see him again when there’s an undeniable bond between them beneath all of his inferiority complexes and antagonisms, confusing positives and negatives all jumbled up and overtaken by the over arching sense of rage in his heart that after everything he went through to find Atem again, that he would just show up here, out of the blue. A storm brews beneath the surface that he keeps carefully buried beneath his cool exterior, silent for too long before he finds himself contained enough to make a snide remark as he so often does.

“Not nearly long enough. Aren’t you supposed to be dead or something?”

   Growing up, he was accustomed to living with others and doing what he could to help out. He didn’t mean to notice little things about his new roommate, he shouldn’t really care but… clearly he knew more about his roommate and who he was than visa-versa, which was kind of annoying, actually. Seto Kaiba was a morning person… and a night person. Well, every time he was awake, he was so that was concerning. 

    Having woken up himself, he was comfortable enough with Kaiba now that he just wore pajamas. (the first two days or so he was Fully Dressed because… well….. he should be, right?) Making two cups of coffee, he’s remembered just how the other liked his coffee and brought it out to the unnecessary long kitchen table that he was seated on, typing away on his laptop. Sitting down beside the other, he left a chair in-between them, not wanting to invite himself into the others personal space without a direct invitation to do so. Sliding the coffee closer to the other, he tilts his head back to look at the clock hanging in the living room area. 

    “ Are you working? It’s before nine a.m. Don’t you owe yourself some sleep? Not that it’s any of my business. “ it’s not like I care about your well-being or anything! He can admit that he was being a little… intrusive and that he shouldn’t worry about a stranger so much, but he held the other in high regard.

    Perhaps the most difficult change to adjust to in living with another person-- someone aside from Mokuba, at least, and a stranger at that-- is the fact that he feels so... observed. He’s naturally accustomed to being in the center of the public eye, to the shrewd and ever present gaze of business men who fancy themselves better and wiser than him, sizing him up for weakness... but there’s something inherently more vulnerable, more intimate, about feeling watched in his own personal spaces that sets his teeth on edge. It doesn’t suit him like solitude does, where he’s free to do whatever he pleases with no one present to nag him about self-care and really expect him to listen... if only because his brother learned it was a fruitless endeavor long ago. At least, as far as roommates go, Jack isn’t particularly invasive, but there’s something about him that he can’t quite identify that puts him especially on edge.

    It’s... the way that Jack is more subtly attentive, maybe, not pushing their established boundaries the way he’s accustomed to people doing but still clearly making it a habit to observe his mannerisms enough to remember little details. He’s at least adjusted enough to the other’s presence that he doesn’t move away or react to Jack sitting down beside him, allowing the other into his personal space (surprising, when his personal bubble tends to extend far beyond an ordinary person’s) and picking up the mug set down for him with a hum of acknowledgment. Say what you will of the man, but Jack does have a good sense of taste for coffee... even if he’d only initially thought to try it because of the branding (even if he wouldn’t ever admit to that). 

    Taking a sip but not taking his main attention away from the screen in front of him, the comment makes him chuckle, well accustomed to having such a high strung, constant work ethic that he really... doesn’t necessarily even notice how much he overworks himself anymore. “Don’t worry, Mother, I sleep plenty enough as it is.” No he doesn’t, clearly obvious by the subtle signs of exhaustion that are always obvious in his day to day appearance. But sleep isn’t something that comes easily anyway, and he’d rather spend his time being productive... not that he’s about to divulge particularly information to the other.

    Snide comments aside, he finally looks away enough to cast a glance over the other, giving him a quick once over before returning back to his work. “You can get enough sleep for the both of us, while I still have a business to run. Is that agreeable enough for you?” That’s... certainly not how that works, at all, but he is nothing if not stubbornly set in his ways.
