Oppression.

Oppression; prolonged cruel or unjust treatment or exercise of authority.

I’ll firstly highlight that anyone can be made a subject of oppression. Men, women, and children.

When you hear the word oppression, what is the first thought that comes to mind? Women in Religion? Probably. Most people would think that. 

But I think oppression (specifically around women and women’s rights) stretches far beyond the grasps of Religion. Women in relationships are subject to oppression every day. Yes, every day. Not every single woman, but I’d say over 60% of you are going through this, the sad thing is, you probably don’t even know it’s happening.

As women, how do we deal with this? Do we fight back and be told we’ve lost our femininity and that we are just overreacting? Wouldn’t that reaction also be oppressive to be told that? Or do we sit there and just take it with grace a smile on our faces so that our image of ourselves to them is not stained? Oppression.

How do we pin point all the things that fall into the grey area? What’s black? What’s white?

Are we willing to subject our own minds and hearts just to feel loved and wanted? Do we just sit here and believe we deserve or even want this?

In this day and age, women are a force to be reckoned with. We are not your punching bags. We are not your slaves. We have our own minds, our own hearts, our own beliefs, and we have our own right to want happiness, just treatment and a good life.

No one, absolutely no one has the right to take that from you.
