Something I do find lovely about the first 4 Murderbot Diaries books (can’t yet speak on all of them) is:
Murderbot chronically finding new scientists/travellers to claim as “clients” (whether paid or not) like one of those sheepless herding dogs that goes around finding sheep (or anything else they can herd like a flock of sheep). Like it clearly has a protect humans instinct and a desperate need for enrichment.
Given its general lack of self awareness and unreliable narrator status, there’s no way in hell Murderbot is aware it’s doing this.
getting characters into world-endingly intense codependent queerplatonic relationships is literally what life is all about. it is literally what we were put here on this earth to do

I think that Murderbot is unintentionally sandbagging itself by slowing down its processing speed with all the media it has downloaded and over time that has trained its circuits to run even faster.
A thing i LOVED in Platform Decay was that Nanna kept trying to feed Murderbot and its just lowkey sliding all of it to someone else. Doesn't tell her 'no' and doesn't question why this cranky old lady wants to feed it. Immediately I recognized she actually likes it and wants to take care of it and it DOESNT RECOGNIZE THAT 😭😭😭😭✨️✨️✨️✨️💖💖💖💖

Thinking about the whole "there is no platonic explanation for this" thing and how it doesn't account for intense platonic situationships and anyways I think we should start saying "there is no casual explanation for this" bc really what we're talking about is the way the characters in question are Obsessed with each other

I think it'd be really funny if Nanna Naja wasn't blood-related to anyone else in the Mensah clan and was, instead, another ex-corporate Dr. Mensah picked up. She just calls all the older Mensahs "my son/daughter/child".
Like, imagine it from the Mensahlings PoV:
Second mom comes back from a trip and brings home a grandma. Who used to shoot people, but doesn't anymore.
Second mom comes back from a trip and brings home an uncle (Gurathin). Who has more augments than anyone you've ever seen.
Second mom comes back from a trip and brings home a SecUnit third mom. Who always has the best media.
Second mom comes back from a trip and suddenly you have two new siblings (Janity and Tula).
I imagine they'd start trying to make requests at some point. "Second mom, do you think you can bring back a cousin this time?"

Do we think that the world of tmbd has proprietary genders? Like we know of at least one gender only used in one particular group of non-corporate political entities, so there's no system in place that automatically makes genders universal. It make me wonder, particularly with regards to those born into corporate slavery. If you figure out your gender while still indentured to a company and it's a new microlabel you are coining, does the company own the intellectual property of your gender? If you ever manage to regain your freedom, will you have to lease the right to keep using the label of your gender (and possibly accompanying pronouns) or risk legal action? The corporate ownership over every part of people's lives is already so exaggerated in the series, I think it's a possibility. Not one I trust a (as far as I'm aware) cis author with to be clear, but still. Terrifying to ponder

I've seen so many posts about Mensah's perspective of ART/Network Effect, how have I not seen one's about ART's crew's perspective. Network Effect as told by Seth.
You have a child who is an extremely powerful (somewhat illegal) machine intelligence. It's a good kid, mostly, except it doesn't play well with others. Your kid periodically goes on short trips by itself, and this has always been fine.
One time, it comes back and it's acting... weird. It keeps bringing up things it has no reason to know about and then dodging questions about it. Finally, you get it to admit that it picked up a hitchhiker on this on this trip, even though you have very strict rules about never picking up hitchhikers. This hitchhiker is obviously it's new favorite person. They watched soap operas together. Your kid loves soap operas now. Your kid shows you a bunch of pictures of this hitchhiker, but won't tell you details because the hitchhiker in question is a wanted criminal on the run and also an escaped slave. This is probably fine (you sure hope it's fine).
Then, you and the rest of your family/friends get fucking kidnapped and used as hostages to make your kid behave. You know that your kid 1) will do anything to protect you, and 2) pretty much always goes for violence first, so you have your doubts about any of this going well.
Then, the hitchhiker your kid will not shut up about appears out of thin air in the middle of a firefight on a planet pretty much no one has any reason to be near and says your kid sent it. It proves this by telling you your kid is a dickhead (this is true and works, but still).
After a lot of mutual rescuing, you're back on board the ship that is also your kid, and find out that your kid kidnapped it's wanted-criminal-hitchhiker-friend and all of it's friends, and has been telling them all of your top secret confidential spy information. The hitchhiker is responsible for 90% of the top news stories you've seen in the last six months. Three different governments want this person dead or alive.
Your kid pushes the hitchhiker's resume across the table at you and makes big sad puppy eyes.
ART as a character is great because it's an answer to the age-old question of "what if you encountered what's essentially a man-made eldritch horror and it was so fucking annoying about it"
