I love this, though, because my favorite thing about Superman is he isn’t Batman. I love Batman too, but Superman isn’t a dude who decided to live his life in pursuit of a vendetta against society when he was eight and then just did nothing for the next two decades but get super jacked, become the world’s greatest detective, and memorize every strategy used by every winner in every field of competition in history. Superman is a very good-hearted person who knows how to bale hay, use AP Stylebook, and break meteors into manageable bite-sized pieces by hitting them real hard. And I’m not saying Superman isn’t smart. He’s a bright guy, he’s just not like, one of the celebrated geniuses of the DC Universe. The best thing about Superman is he is basically a normal dude who happens to be orders of magnitude stronger than anyone else. Normal dudes have brain farts. Normal dudes are presented with a life-or-death situation they have less than four seconds to resolve and make a decision that is not optimal. Normal dudes aren’t typically asked to rescue a child from a 10,000 ton machine bearing down on him at 85mph, but if they were, they would probably sometimes panic a little and do dumb shit like ruin a train when they could have just whisked the child to safety.
I think sometimes Superman makes the wrong decision, not necessarily to the result of extreme catastrophe, but something like this, where everyone is standing around clapping and cheering and the kid’s parents are weeping in gratitude and they want to pose for a picture for the 6 o’ clock news with Superman and the conductor, and in the crowd someone is like “Why didn’t he fly the kid out of the way?” and rather than rolling with the fact that the emperor is naked his friend just says “Shut up, Drew, it’s Superman.”
And then, because I also love Batman for very different reasons, I imagine that later on the same day Bruce Wayne gets a phone call and Clark Kent is like “Hey, Wayne, I uh, need a favor.”
“Do you now.”
“Yeah, I, uh, kind of owe the Union Pacific Railroad $60,000.”
“Oh, and why’s that?”
“Come on, don’t do this to me. It was all over the news.”
“I’m prepared to write you a no-strings-attached check for the full amount on the condition that you explain your entire thought process from beginning to end.”
Anyway, that’s why I like Superman.
I think this is very accurate. One time a tree fell on me in the forest and while it would have made more sense to simply jump to the side and avoid it my idiot brain went through the fight-or-flight options and apparently chose fight, so I reached out my hand and caught the tree, then dropped it on the ground beside me. Ended up fracturing my wrist and wondering why the fuck my brain thought that was the best option for survival. I don’t think people are good at really weighing the optimal choices in moments of crisis.
Bruce: “New Justice League policy. I am willing to pay for whatever damages you guys do in the name of justice and saving lives, but you have to write up a report detailing how the damage occured, including your thought process. Every once in a while, I will complie them into a presentation that we will go through as a whole to determine how you could have mitigated the collateral damage.”
Clark: “This is going to be a ‘name and shame’ type of thing, isn’t it?”
Bruce, lying through his teeth: “Of course not, don’t be ridiculous. This is to improve ourselves.”
The ones who admit “I don’t know what happened here” get a pass on shaming but they still get the alternative suggestions list
Like it was even hard
Don't talk about weight loss and diets to your daughter, don't talk about weight loss and diets around your daughter, don't comment on your daughter's weight, don't tell her she has to weigh herself every once in a while, don't ruin your daughter's relationship with food, don't make her feel bad about the way she looks. I'm sorry if diet culture fucked you up but please try to break the cycle instead of perpetuating it. Thanks.
Can’t believe I was fooled into thinking Aerith was just another meek healer girl in Final Fantasy spin offs and Kingdom Hearts when she’s actually FERAL
She was sadly extremely flanderized by Advent Children and Kingdom Hearts. As someone who played the original and remember the Aerith who threatens to rip off Don Corneo’s balls, it was super nice to see her restored in the remake.
I love Aerith so much.

this misconception that pedophiles are all old men with no families or social life who do nothing but lurk in the bushes all day has got to stop. there are pedophiles in fandom spaces. there are pedophiles who are authors and readers and artists. there are pedophiles who aren’t men, or middle aged. fandom in general tends to be so anti ~censorship~ that these people run rampant in fandom spaces and a lot of minors are hurt by it–I was, many people around my age that I know were. There are most definitely pedophiles writing and reading fanfic and making a community where absolutely nothing is censored or disallowed is only making a community that’s more welcoming to them.
and if you read this post and you’re about to post an angry rant in the replies about Censorship Bad and Don’t Like Don’t Read: take a moment to consider why the completely neutral, factual statement of “there are pedophiles in fandom spaces and those spaces should be made less welcoming to them” gets you so riled up
I’m sorry to take over your post like this, but this is an important conversation to have. You’re absolutely right- pedophiles are in fandom spaces. They aren’t all just old men with no social lives - there are female pedophiles, young adult pedophiles, talented pedophiles, pedophiles with huge platforms and numerous followers. There are pedophiles in the entertainment industry, preying on child actors and child audiences alike, and there are pedophiles grooming children all over the world with their creations and discussions.
That being said, we also need to make the distinction between actual pedophilia and plain old fandom activity. I’ve seen accusations of pedophilia thrown around in fandom spaces so much that it’s muddled the actual, original meaning of the word. Shipping two characters with an age difference is not pedophilia. Shipping child characters together is not pedophilia. Shipping human/alien and mortal/immortal couples together is not pedophilia. Aging up characters is not pedophilia. Making fictional content that explores unhealthy dynamics is not pedophilia. These practices might make people uncomfortable, and there is an argument to be made about fandom regulation, but that doesn’t make any of it pedophilia.
Pedophilia is when an adult starts courting, grooming, or otherwise romantically and/or sexually engaging with a child. It is one of the absolute worst aspects of humanity, and is sick, wrong, disgusting, and deeply damaging. And it DOES happen in fandom spaces.
I have close friends who have been victims of child grooming and pedophilic attention, and they are still deeply traumatized by it. We watch pedophiles get busted sometimes, because it makes them feel a sense of satisfaction knowing these horrible people are getting caught and punished. They avoid fandom discourse, because they genuinely despise the way that people on the Internet throw accusations of pedophilia around. How that word is being cheapened and muddled for petty fandom drama and shipping discourse. How people are growing up thinking that pedophilia “isn’t that bad really” because it’s thrown around so much, used as a “gotcha” when people on the internet are trying to banish their nOTPs. How it’s making it harder to tell the difference between actual pedophiles and normal people on the internet.
I’m gonna say it again. Modern fandom discourse is making it harder to tell the difference between actual pedophiles and normal people on the internet.
If you see someone engaging in pedophilic behavior on the internet - ACTUAL pedophilic behavior, not just petty fandom bullshit - then you need to take away their platform and report them to the authorities IMMEDIATELY. If there is fandom drama happening between an adult and a child in a fandom space, especially if the child is claiming the adult is engaging in predatory behavior, TAKE THE CHILD’S SIDE. I don’t CARE how good the adult’s art or whatever is, that kid is GOING to need your support. If you are a child, DO NOT - I REPEAT, DO NOT engage with an adult who is displaying predatory and/or pedophilic behavior. Block them, report them, DO NOT TALK TO THEM. Engagement is how they start grooming you.
And to everyone else, NEVER require someone to share their trauma with you in order to excuse their creations. You don’t need to know everyone’s life story, and this sort of moral obligation to complete brutal honesty is encouraging kids to share personal information on the internet that makes them more vulnerable to become victims of pedophilia and human trafficking. Nobody owes you their medical history. And you aren’t obligated to share anything with anyone, especially not on the internet.
Stay safe, be cautious, and be respectful.
I don’t think anyone is arguing that pedophiles don’t exist in fandom spaces, can’t be any age or gender, or that they cannot engage in fandom the same way everyone else does. However, OP, when you say that “these people run rampant in fandom spaces” and repeatedly bring up those who create fandom content or consume it, and then talk about censorship in the next breath, I have to wonder. Are “these people” actual predators who are grooming, manipulating and trying to cultivate inappropriate relationships with minors online? Or are they just people who make content that others find problematic or objectionable?
Because a lot of people now days seem to have a hard time knowing the difference.
To claim your statement was 100% neutral— and insinuating that anyone who disagrees on the basis of censorship has something to hide— is disingenuous. What you said wasn’t just “pedophiles exist in fandom and those spaces should be less welcoming to them”. You’re also advocating for certain content not to be allowed in fandom, and essentially saying that if you don’t want any censorship, you must either be a pedophile, or someone aiding and abetting them.
I’m sorry that you and your friends have been hurt by such things online, but there is a big difference between seeing something you don’t like or is triggering for you personally, and that creator being a predator/pedophile. Simply creating content people find objectionable does not make someone a predator. Now, I’m not saying that’s necessarily the case for you and your friends, but a large group of people in fandom (many of whom tend to skew younger) do not seem to understand that.
The problem when you start talking about censorship is: who gets to decide?
Do you, OP? You who, according to your about page, believes that ace people are not inherently part of the LGBT+ community (among other…interesting takes involving the ace community), that people shouldn’t headcanon fictional characters as ace, that demisexuality doesn’t exist, that queer is a slur? Do you get to decide, based on your personal beliefs and opinions, what makes someone’s content acceptable to exist in the fandom? Or whether or not their fic/artwork makes them a pedophile? Who exactly gets to make that call?
It’s not like this hasn’t happened before. Were you on tumblr in 2018 when the NSFW ban happened? When lots of innocent people and blogs got swept up in the ban- including many in the LGBT+ community who were branded as NSFW by the filters simply for their identity? Are you aware of the Fanfiction.net purges in 2002 (though I’m sure weren’t online then) and 2012, that saw mass deletion without warning of thousands of fic?
As @looney-mooney stated above, there is a wide swath of fandom that have resorted to flinging the word pedophile at anyone and everyone they find personally objectionable. Whether that’s for shipping problematic pairings (which may or may not actually be problematic), to anyone who disagrees with them, and everything in between. And this has made spotting true red flags and actual predators more difficult.
Predators, unfortunately, will always exist. In any space, throughout history, they have and will continue to find ways of insinuating themselves regardless of what kind of space it is. And yes, we should always be vigilant and report actual predators.
But I think it is far more important and helpful to make posts about exactly what kind of behavior is predatory. What are the signs of an adult behaving in an inappropriate way with minors online, and what are the steps to take when that happens? Giving young people the tools to help protect themselves online, instead of indiscriminately targeting those you personally feel have transgressed in fandom.
A quick google search gives links like these which provide some actual examples of the ways predators interact: Here & Here.
When the main thing you’re focused on is which content gets to exist in fandom, instead of how actual predators groom, stalk, and manipulate minors online, this starts to look a lot like another instance of purity culture masquerading as concern for the children.
last two people made interesting points
I don’t like to bring this discussion but it is important.
I seen the word pedophile thrown all over online that it’s very concerning and I worry that the word will lose its meaning.
is the discussion of possible pedophile referring to some fan creating fanwork which delve in weird topics but ultimately fictional or is it talking about an actual person who showing pedophilic behavior towards minors and interactions of any sort with minors. because I don’t want waste of time spent stupid fandom discource.
I once saw someone threatened a fan to call authorities over ships. which is for one stupid as hell, TWO a waste of authorities time, my god do NOT do this over a fucking drawing or writing (unless its a deciption of and refers to a real actual child, THEN BY ALL MEANS DO REPORT)
what I do want is us to be able to work together to help protect minors and and educate them on how to safely navigate online and watch out for warning behavior from individuals and to stay away and report them. and adults to watch out for any concerning questionable behavior from individuals that show evidence of child endangerment and report that fucker ASAP and warn others so they stay clear of such individuals
in short, I’m all for fighting against and removing predators, fuck those scumbags. I just want to make sure we do this right and going after the right individuals
I forget to post here...but I haven’t really drawn much lately sowwyy
