I know people often do these, but I don't want to hear any "staticmoth is better than radiostatic" mundane, palatable opinions. I want to hear your most contentious, your most divisive, your most polemic, your nastiest, deepest hidden opinions that on any other app would get you beleaguered. I want to hear the opinions that you're afraid of voicing because other fans will flip out. Run wild and don't worry about consequences, the comment section is a safe space, and I will delete any offensive comments or people trying to argue "no, you're wrong" because I want to hear OPINIONS

He got kicked out of heaven. I get that. But he doesn't give a damn about his people. Yes, they are sinners. But when Charlie pitches his idea, it's not his fear of heaven that he addresses first. It's the fact that they don't DESERVE redemption. They WASTED his gift to humanity. THEY did. Not an ounce of responsibility on his part for that.
Also, what do you mean 'They got free will and look what they did with it!'. Sir, THAT IS WHAT FREE WILL IS. If you wanted peace and order all the time, you probably shouldn't have defied God and offered an alternative.
Anyway, he's alright with Exterminations. Who cares about the sinners anyway? HE doesn't, clearly. And he can't even pretend to like them. Showing up at the hotel, he was so RUDE about the admittedly tacky decor. Fine, maybe he can't read the room. But he seems DISGUSTED by them. The only person he initiates contact with, hug or handshake, IS A FELLOW ANGEL. Alastor points out that he's not as tall as he is in the magazines and he calls him a nut, presents his disembodied head to Charlie for supporting her, and tries to outdo him at any moment knowing that the power disparity is basically infinite. Feeling threatened by his flimsy fatherly role being taken, he shows off in order to help. Not for the cause, but because his pride was wounded by someone.
And then he fights Adam... and wins... EFFORTLESSLY. He is so strong. So much stronger than all the Exorcists and could have fought back a long time ago. In fact, Lilith seemed to want this to happen (my theory) and clearly cared about her people much more than he did. I'd wager that his cowardice and lack of empathy for their people was a big point of contention in the divorce. Yes, there is an entire realm backing the Exorcists. But he doesn't even TRY. Nor does he care. He just wallows in self-pity over his own actions.
And later, he helps with the hotel with a supposedly changed heart. I don't buy it. He just wants to protect Charlie and show off. That's my speculation, though.
No sympathy. No empathy. No regret. No accountability. No bravery. No presence. No authority. Nothing for anyone else but himself and his family.
YES YES YES YES YES ALL OF THIS!!! I wish more people will recognize how self-absorbed and pretermaturally selfish this man is. I think he'd be more digestible if we as a fandom acknowledged these traits and recognized him as a deeply flawed person instead of the "uwu duck girl dad who's never done anything wrong"
Do you think fans just assume that Vox is a talentless hack because they just straightforwardly believe what Alastor says about him depending on other people (which Alastor himself doesn't even believe, otherwise why would his plan hinge on Vox becoming the strongest Sinner on his own?), or for some other reason?
I have seen people talk about Vox relying on others in a way that makes it sound like a bad thing, and people take various characters (especially the protagonists) at face value on all sorts of things. So that probably is part of it.
But I think the bigger issue is that way too many people look at the way he copies others, and instead of putting it in the context of the entire rest of his character (self-worth issues, reliance on external validation, always trying to be what he thinks people will like), they just interpret it as laziness and having nothing meaningful of his own to contribute.
Like, I go into the YouTube comments of any reprise Vox does, and all I see is people talking about how clever and thematically appropriate it is that he's always copying other people's songs, because "he can't do anything on his own and has no original ideas". No one talks about how clever it is that VOX DEI (translation: The Voice of God) reprises a piece from a character who declares himself "nearly a god" while lacking the power to do what he's threatening to do, or that Vox is taking elements of Lucifer's performance while facing down angels. But everyone rags on him for copying Lucifer (and Sera) in the first place.
Or you've got the people who fully believe that he's copying Alastor's look, even though his suit bears strong resemblance to the outfit he was wearing when he died, and the only similarities between his suit and Alastor's are the pinstripes, the shape of the lapels, and the fact that they both wear bowties. Sir Pentious also wears pinstripes, his lapels are also the same shape, and his bowtie is actually the same style and colors as Alastor's, but no one is accusing him of copying anyone.
A couple shared stylistic elements isn't copying. At most, Vox's current outfit is inspired by Alastor's, because under his jacket, he's wearing the same vest-and-shirt combo that's been his style for seven decades. And even calling it inspired is a stretch, because Alastor does not have a monopoly on pinstripes, Vox has stripes on most of his outfits, and his jacket is both a different style and worn differently than Alastor's.
Aesthetics aside, there is a difference between copying something for the sake of copying, and copying something because it works and putting your own spin on it. Vox might be copying Alastor's shadow tentacles with his cables, but where Alastor uses his primarily for fighting, Vox is constantly using his for all sorts of utilitarian things. He might be copying Alastor's elemental form/teleportation, but unlike Alastor, he can and does use his as an attack power. Most of the time he doesn't just imitate, he modifies and adapts.
On top of the copying thing, some people just refuse to give him credit for certain things, and I cannot see any reason for it beyond that they want him to be a joke (or they just believe Alastor's rhetoric). I've seen a lot of argument that he would have been scared when Lucifer showed up if he hadn't known he couldn't harm him, or that the angels weren't scared by his performance in VOX DEI. Never mind that he doesn't even flinch when an angelic spear is held to his chest, confronts the angels without a hint of fear after his initial surprise, and Lute is literally the only one of the four who isn't visibly shaken by the event (Sera being motivated by fear is literally a plot point).
People just. Fundamentally do not understand the mindset that leads someone to copy others even when they're demonstrably capable of doing their own thing, or the way it affects them to actively reject who they are because who they are isn't "good enough". Or the fact that some people have a shaky sense of identity to begin with, and have trouble not soaking up bits of everyone around them like a sponge. So they see a character with any of those traits and it's like. Yeah, he copies people because he's nothing on his own.
Which is exactly the sort of judgmental attitude that makes such issues worse IRL, and one of the many, many reasons the unchecked ableism in this fandom is becoming increasingly irksome.
Vox imitating Sera's form in VOX DEI read less like, omg he has no original ideas, and more like him openly mocking her and showing that he's not scared of her, to me.
Yup. I'm like, 99.9% sure that was the intention. Not to mention, Sera has already returned to her normal form before he does it, so it's a very strong visual for the tables turning; she tried to intimidate him, and he took that and used it against her.
He really likes using people's own efforts against them. One of the many things people don't take into account when they get on him for copying.
Every time I see someone assert in full seriousness that Vox fakes being able to play the piano, I just kinda roll my eyes and move on. But now I have seen the additional assertion that he's probably "the kind of ADHD who's too lazy to stick with something he's not immediately good at", and I can ignore this no longer.
First off, "the kind of ADHD who's too lazy" is ableist as fuck, and you have earned my animosity.
Second off, he is fully and demonstrably capable of playing. If you are so certain that he's faking, then explain to me this:
His hands are on exactly the right keys at exactly the right time. There are no discordant notes from pressing keys randomly, and no keys down that shouldn't be. He knows which keys to press when, and he has the muscle memory to follow along perfectly. He has spent significant time on this, he could play it completely unaided, and he could literally play it with his eyes closed, because they are closed almost the entire time.
Every single scrap of evidence points to, not only the ability to play, but a high level of tactile familiarity with the keyboard, which requires time and effort to obtain. You could convince me that he doesn't know how to read sheet music, but only because he's a very tactile person who isn't relying on sight here, so I could fully believe he learned to play mostly or entirely through touch and sound.
By request of @chonaku-things and @joycew-blog: some thoughts on writing Vox with regards to sex and sex scenes, based on observations from canon.
Since interpretations of characters vary, I'm just going to treat this as a comparison between canon and fanon, and let people take what they will from it. But since it apparently needs to be said: personality does not dictate sexual preferences. Writing in-character smut is about how they approach sex as a concept, not about what they're into.
Obviously we have some information about how Vox approaches sex. But I am actually not going to start with that because other areas of his life give us more useful information to work with.
Case in point: I've seen a fair number of fics where he makes a big deal of how good he is in bed, and basically puffs himself up like a peacock. I think he's supposed to be read as genuinely confident about it? But I'm honestly not sure, because it comes off as insecure to me. Especially if he's making a show of how dominant he is at the same time (granted, I am not impressed by performative dominance, so that could just be me).
The thing is, bragging and continually bringing up his accomplishments is what he does when he's trying to prove himself to Alastor. When he is fishing for external validation. Or, heck, just look at all of Stayed Gone. He gets really loud when he's trying to insist that he's not worried about something. When he's genuinely confident, most people will not notice it. And I can say that as a fact because the things he is canonically most confident about are things fandom has decided are major insecurities.
His gender: he never complains about or expresses discomfort with "feminine" things, and his aversion to emotional intimacy isn't related to fragile masculinity.
His gender presentation: he makes no effort to hide or justify his feminine traits, nor to emphasize his masculine ones.
His sexuality: he's not advertising that he's in a relationship with a man, but he's casual enough about it to hold Valentino's hand where people can see.
It might seem counterintuitive given how talkative and excitable Vox is, but when he's truly comfortable with himself, he's quiet. He doesn't draw attention to those things because he isn't looking for validation or trying to deny that they exist. So it stands to reason that if he's actually confident in his sexual prowess, he won't feel a need to talk himself up.
Speaking of talking, he is often written as being very direct about what he does or doesn't want, especially when it comes to being the one in charge (there's that performative dominance again). And like. Fair. He is generally pretty clear about what he expects from others, and he does verbally flaunt his control during Don't You Forget (Reprise) (which is a song, and thus requires lyrics, so I don't count it as performative. Plus, he pairs his words with actions. And I don't care if anyone else thinks he's trying too hard, his voice on "Now I'm the master" does it for me).
Anyway.
It's definitely in character for Vox to be verbally blunt, and I can see why people write him that way. Especially when most of his sexual remarks are pretty explicit. Just two things: one, he's only that explicit when he's excited, and his overall behavior when it happens is inappropriate. And two, it just so happens that there is a glaring exception to his bluntness: he is not direct when he's trying to seduce Valentino. When sex is literally the topic.
Here are a couple more things about his behavior when sex comes up: he is extremely flustered when Velvette interrupts the above seduction attempt, visibly uncomfortable when Valentino is publicly draped over him while talking about them having sex, and embarrassed when Val says he and Alastor should fuck. Nor does he appear to find anything funny about sex. Which I have brought up several times, but since we're really getting into it, I want to illustrate just how much he Does Not Appreciate sexual humor and random sexual comments.
When the Vees are talking about sending a spy into the hotel:
Valentino: "Put something inside them. That's how I get the bitches to behave."
Vox, very quiet and curt: "...Yeah."
When Lucifer misspeaks and tells Adam he's going to fuck him:
The other Vees: highly amused.
Vox: highly perturbed.
When Vox is scolding the other two over their recent behavior:
Velvette: "Well maybe people should start sucking less."
Valentino: "Or more."
(Both grin)
Vox: "Moving on!"
Like. Canonically, this man is not going to casually tell someone how much he wants to fuck them. He is probably not going to verbally express a desire to fuck them at all, at least using those words. There is a good chance that he's not going to engage in explicit dirty talk, and might even find it a turn off if his partners do.
It is not for nothing that some people headcanon him as ace. Frankly, he comes off as almost sex-repulsed sometimes.
He isn't, though. His word choice when he's trying to seduce Valentino is evasive, but his tone and behavior make his meaning clear. And Val reacts the instant his tone changes, so that's definitely a normal thing. Vox himself appears completely comfortable whenever they're flirting, he isn't bothered by Val drawing him tied up, and the way he looks at Val, both in the seduction scene and others, is clear attraction/desire. He isn't (canonically) ace. But he may be uncomfortable with, or at least disinterested in, certain elements of the sexual experience. Like dirty talk. Which is incredibly ironic.
As an aside, Valentino tends not to be verbal when he's flirting with Vox. Which is unusual for him, to put it mildly. He does tell him he "cleans up nice for a TV" after being asked for his opinion, but otherwise, most interest is expressed through physical affection and visual cues (apart from the "draping himself over him while talking about sex" thing. And he's annoyed with him when he does that, so he's probably trying to make him uncomfortable).
So! Pulling it all together, Vox's canon approach to sex seems to be... Hands on, shall we say. It's hard to judge how confident he is about his abilities when discomfort is prominent in how he engages with the topic, but it's safe to say that he's not going to be bragging about them. He does appear to be entirely comfortable with possessive/dominating language, so I'm sure he can navigate the verbal components of sex just fine, but it's probably not going to be sexually explicit talk. And it's possible that, left to his own devices, he just wouldn't say much at all. It's also possible that he would prefer his partner not, either, though it might bother him less in an actually sexual context (and all of this might be mitigated if he's in a really good mood that day. At minimum, he'd be more explicit. For better or worse).
He absolutely likes to touch and be touched, so regardless of anything else, he's more likely to express what he wants physically than verbally (moving his partner's hands where he wants them, guiding them into positions, pushing them down or pulling them onto him, etc). Though if he's as unfazed by the idea of being tied up as he appears to be when he sees Valentino drawing him, it probably wouldn't bother him to be the one being manhandled instead.
This also makes it pretty easy to keep him in character, no matter what role one prefers to write him in: he likes physical contact, so whether he's giving or receiving, he's going to have a good time. If bondage is fine with him, then touching need not be reciprocal to be enjoyable. And if one isn't comfortable writing dirty talk, good news, there is an excuse not to. If one is needed.
He is also canonically a sadist, but no one ever does anything with that. Hm.

alastor: alastor has feminine mannerisms in the way he uses his hands, how he sits "primly" at times. he also does slouch and manspread. he is very emotionally restrained and believes he has to always survive entirely on his own (compare vox whos much more emotionally expressive and believes in cooperation)

this is here to contrast with vox's relationship with velvette and women in general, and also to show how far in the "not sexst" end of the spectrum vox is. alastor positions himself in the role of "the saver of women" because he believes women to be "fairer". this is sexist By Definition and a recognised archetype in feminist literature. vox treats velvette as his equal and charlie as a fair rival
the point is that reading al as a feminist girls' girl and vox as a sexist creep is not backed up by canon. if vox is sexist, alastor is worse. if alastor isnt sexist, vox is even less
