i learned very quickly that if i said "im tired all the time and cant find the motivation to do schoolwork" theyd say "no ur just lazy, stop making excuses" and if i said "my ritalin makes me feel uncomfortable and itchy all day" theyd say "stop being difficult and just take the pills" and theyre the adults and im just a lying lazy kid so what they say goes

so since correctly identifying and expressing my feelings was punished i focused instead on making excuses that adults would accept. "i cant bear to spend another day doing busywork in that awful windowless building where all the students and faculty hate me" turned into "i just threw up". until i learned to skip the step where i ask myself why i feel so awful, bc that information sure isnt going to help me

eventually all i was left with was the internalized voice of my teachers and parents insisting that no matter how miserable and exhausted i am i just need to stop faking it and try harder. and its taking a long long time to unlearn that and figure out how im supposed to know how i feel

As a disabled kid, I noticed and came to loathe the cultural belief that kids are "lazy" and "trying to get out of things" in general. Treating kids with suspicion and distrust only makes them less trustworthy.

saw a woman talking about how betrayed she felt by her female gyno who really hurt her during a pap smear & claimed the cervix has no nerve endings. & i really do feel for her but also I think this is the problem with people only viewing medical bigotry and abuse as a problem that is the byproduct of other forms of bigotry & not tied to how the medical establishment works inherently.

it's not just "that doctor has internalized misogyny" it's that western medicine is, as in so many parts of our culture, deeply authoritarian. the patient is meant to be a passive problem to be solved by the active doctor. there is meant to be a stark harsh line between you and the doctor, where you are pure of any medical knowledge and simply report the raw data & let the doctor interpret it. this is how the system works. it fucks over marginalized groups the most because that's how marginalization works, but even a thin white abled cis man could get fucked over by this shit if he's unlucky.

female doctors will not save us! trans doctors will not save us! doctors of color will not save us! these are all GOOD things and we DO need more representation in the medical field, it DOES help. but it will not save us. the same goes with teaching as well frankly. these issues cannot be reduced down to simply getting more people from columns B C and D into the same fucked system. nothing can make up for the societal change of heart we really need.

#I'm biased because i work primarily with residents #but i really do think changing the culture of residency is the key to changing so many problems in medicine #if you're expected to work to the point and past exhaustion you're going to expect your patients to tough it out #if you're expected to treat your attending as an unquestionable authority then you're going to expect your patients to treat you that way #diversity is not going to fix the issue that doctors have to endure legitimate trauma to get their license #and are also discouraged from getting therapy for that trauma for fear of losing that license which absolutely happens #the fact that therapy is discouraged and can risk your job rather than MANDATORY for physicians is so backwards #i know what viewing all those pathology images did to me i can't even imagine what that does to someone working in clinical care #i think the way doctors behave make more sense if you realize that every single one of them has unprocessed trauma

as a certified woman-lover I understand the instinct to say there's no such thing as a woman who isn't beautiful or all women are amazing etc. and i take a lot of comfort in loving women. and beauty is in the eye of the beholder etc. we can't say anyone is objectively attractive or not and "ugly" is a loaded worded riddled with a history of fatphobia, racism, and ableism. that all being said, all women don't have to be beautiful to deserve respect. women are allowed to be "ugly". if we hinge our respect for women solely on how much we love them then what happens when there are women we don't find attractive or nice or pleasant or who actually have no desire to be seen as attractive either. what about grandma? idgaf if you find old women hot, what about their unpaid labour? their rights??

The tent is up!

This is a vevor 16.5 ft bell tent (it's gone up in price since I bought it but it's pretty reasonable value for money) painted with latex exterior house paint, the cheapest stuff they had at menards. I used a folding foam mattress on top of the four storage bins my gear was packed in as a cot--quite comfy and practical; I'm going to cut a sheet of plywood as a bin topper and do that again for sure. The guyline shorteners are just sections of 2x2 furring strips, cut and painted. There's documentation on the process for nearly all of this here already.

Some other build notes! To get the pattern onto the tent, I laid the tent out flat in my driveway and cut out a paper template, then traced it with pencil onto each panel. Then, over the winter, I put the tent section-by-section onto a table in my den, and painted one area at a time, just filling in the lines.

The awning in front is two cotton throw blankets, sewn together by hand with an overlap of about 2", so there's a channel in the center that the guyline from the tent door can run through. I did replace the original guyline here with one that's roughly 8 ft longer, to accommodate the awning. I sewed eyelets into the corners of the blankets, and added tassels for fun. The center post for the awning is just a 2x2 furring strip, painted with random extra house paint and paint markers. It's 6'6" tall, and there's a groove in the top to keep the rope in place. The awning is not enough to totally block rain--I really just wanted a sunshade--but it does decrease amount of rain coming through. It does actually need two more posts on the front corners to make the space inside tall enough to stand, which I just did with sticks the next time I set this up.
