what I really like about all these vintage couple’s portraits is that there is a very certain romatic decorum kept up – certain themes and poses – which, while of course being the mainstream preferred view of couples repeated throughout many studios, are just… so nice to look at. 

this staged affection, a mix of theatricality and intimacy, the couple holding still for a couple of moments and now immortalised in a very set sequence of embraces and kisses. there is a charm to it even when I can’t tell whether this was a genuine couple portait or just actors hired by the photographer.

the kiss on the bare shoulder (eyes perfectly averted), the cheek caress, the piano and the violin, the interrupted embrace, the woman tilted back as in a half-stopped dance…

I simply must torment you a bit with these, let us see some of my personal favourites! (part one due to the image limit)

let us start with the kiss on the cheek (eyes averted! oh the pose! these were taken between 1910-1940)

or the nearly opposite energy (how daring!) of the kiss or caress with direct eye contact (1910-1930)

and then the innocent – yet so flirty – classic of the park encounter! (1890-1920)

Headcanons for an AU where JB are both merpeople?

• Jaime is a shark mermaid while Brienne is a whale mermaid.

• Jaime’s right fin is ripped off from fending Brienne from a bunch of other sharks. Brienne some scars on her side from defending Jaime as well

• Pod, the remora fish follows Brienne around

• I wanna be like Hyle is an octopus bc he’s kinda slimy!! But I like octopuses so he doesn’t deserve them so he’s kind of like a squid? A big squid. But a squid is too cool for him so maybe he’s like some mediocre fish like a tuna or a sea bass

Note: they’re all mermaids by the by

• I’m thinking the waters in the Stormlands are cooler compared to the Westerlands, so Brienne would be relatively larger in size than him. The sea current in the Stormlands are rougher as well, and Jaime was not used to it at first, and he had to learn a specific technique with how to go through the currents especially since his right fin was not so strong

The Bather

Tried for a twist on the classic art history trope of the bather :)

I adore this painting.  I never ever see my body type represented in art.

I’ve always loved the phrasing of this line - 

just the choice of the words ‘he decided’ to me implies that in the time they’ve been separated, Jaime’s subconscious has been playing with his memory of Brienne and ‘messing things up’

you know, like when you begin to be attracted to someone you never thought you’d be attracted to and you don’t WANT to be attracted to and you try really hard to convince yourself it’s your mind playing tricks on you

Somehow, in his head, she doesn’t seem as unappealing as she used to. On some level, this unsettles him, and so when he sees her again, the first thing he does is try to reassure himself - “See? Still ugly. False alarm. LOL”

(and then proceeds to check her out and compliment her eyes and give her a priceless, beautifully gift-wrapped sword and a knightly quest etc, but, like…… OK Jaime)
