There’s one theme in Steven Universe that’s been in front of us this entire time that I’ve never seen discussed. It’s what happens when our plans fail. It’s been discussed with individual characters, but never as a broader theme.
More importantly what happens when our lives don’t turn out the way we expected them to. Whether it’s something as “simple” as not fitting into an assigned role, literally being banished or left behind; or something as grandiose as rebelling against everything you ever knew– because you had to, or in the name of love, in any and all its multifaceted forms.
Every single character has ‘where they were’ and ‘what happened after IT happened’. Most poignantly:
Pearl: Living her life and soul for Rose Quartz and the rebellion.
“You just think about the life you’ll have together after the war!”
Do it for him
Garnet: Or rather Ruby and Sapphire living their lives exactly in the roles that had been given to them.
Until they created something entirely new.
“Why am I so sure that I’d rather be this than everything I was supposed to be, and that I’d rather do this than anything I was supposed to do?”
More recently:
Peridot: Again, just doing her job. She failed, through no fault of her own. It happens.
And then she learned. She really, really learned. To see the bigger picture, to expand her world beyond the narrow role she had always known, to actually care about others. She’s still learning, but…
“I have something different now.”
And tonight, Lapis: We don’t know why she was sent to earth, but clearly the war was chaotic. Poof first, ask questions later. Get trapped in an object without a voice and left behind. When you’re finally rediscovered, those who find you have no idea you’re still you in there. Break free only to find you can’t go home again. Lash out at the perceived cause/threat, literally trapped in an incredibly intimate yet equally toxic relationship. Lose sight of the fact that two wrongs don’t make a right. Long for freedom with every atom of your being, while simultaneously having no idea what to do with it once you have it. Nothing has gone the way it should have for literally thousands of years. Nothing at all.
“Did you even wonder who I use to be?”
And then:
“I want to see it. I want to stay here.”
And that’s what it comes down to. It’s not failure. It’s no settling. So often things beyond our control take our lives places we never imagined they would go, for better or worse.
No matter how much we think we know what’s going to happen in the future, sometimes we just don’t. Our best laid plans can go flying out the window, and our lives can do a 180 in an instant. That doesn’t make our lives from then on out any less valid, it doesn’t mean you did anything wrong. It’s different, but its yours.
Keep your head up and move forward. It may not be easy, but chances are it’ll turn out okay. Open your heart and your mind, and give it time. Even Gems that are literally thousands of years old are learning this one day at a time. Just like the rest of us.
take me to the r rated wendys. take me to the wendys that quentin tarantino directed.
things you will see on a road trip across america
-so much desert that you will get scared
-seriously from california to new mexico is terrifying like it’s eight straight hours of pale red desert and the sky is so large that everything, even your car, even your hands, looks like a tenuously small and fragile diorama placed on an endless pale red table and left there to dissolve.
-a gas station that for some reason has large dinosaurs made out of scrap metal. they are 1000% awesome. sometimes they move. take a million pictures.
-a fruit stand that sells the best fruit you have ever eaten. later you won’t quite remember which fruit. strawberries, maybe? peaches?
-small black birds, subtly different in every state. some have gold eyes and some are a little iridescent and some are black from beak to toes. the sparrows they compete with for crumbs look exactly the same wherever you go.
-a completely empty rest stop. no one eats at the concrete tables. no one plays in the tiny strip of grass or gravel. you will find a small and beautiful stone.
-a hawaii license plate, somewhere around ohio. i still don’t know how they get the cars across the ocean. i don’t know why anyone would leave hawaii for ohio. i don’t know why anyone lives in ohio.
-an incredibly weird duck. you had no idea ducks could look so incredibly weird, and you wish you were still ignorant of how incredibly weird ducks can, apparently, look.
-a small folksy roadside waystation that sells fudge and incredibly tacky statues of eagles and wolves and cowboys. if you like fudge, eat the fudge from here.
-a lizard doing pushups. if you are particularly fortunate: many lizards doing pushups.
-approximately one gajillion starbucks shops. don’t bother counting them. it will make you angry.
-a storm somewhere around oklahoma, if you’re lucky. the clouds tower up in fantastic fluffy castles miles and miles into the air and are painted pink and gold and purple and the sky turns a dozen impossible shades of blue and when the rain comes down over your car it sounds like the world is ending.
-weird burrs will stick to your legs. you’ll flick them out of the car eighty or eight hundred miles from where their parent plant was grown, and not be sure whether you should wish the little hitchikers well or not.
-a dog wearing sunglasses with his head hanging out of a car window. this will be the high point of the trip.
-the world’s most depressing restaurant. you will know it when you wind up there and have to eat the terrible food, and listen to the terrible music, and look at all the listless waiters and want to tell them get in my car, for god’s sake get in, i’ll take you out of whatever crapsack little town this is that you can’t get out of on your own. but you won’t say that because it’s rude. maybe they have family here. maybe they even like it here.
-a painting of a sailboat in a motel located at least a hundred miles from any significant body of water.
-several genuinely hilarious postcards. buy them.
-a cat that will not let you pet it. this will be the low point of the trip.
-corn. so much corn you will get scared. who the fuck is going to eat all this corn?
-a small stream in some small woods and the light will come down perfectly and the water will be beautiful and the grass will be beautiful and there will be flowers maybe or the leaves of the trees are starting to turn gold and there are birds chirping and it will be so perfect you will want to stand there and stay forever and live in this little magical painting off the side of the highway and be some kind of highway druid. but instead, you’ll get bored after a while, and get back in the car.
if anyone ever wonders why i love america so much despite its many political and cultural flaws, this is why. this post explains it perfectly.
The advice about the fudge is true too.
The deserts are what I love best to drive through NGL. North Texas is way more “HOLY SHIT EMPTINESS” to me where it’s all cotton fields forever, deserts are death giving life a hug with mountains for arms and the arroyos and canyons as the veins in the heart.

-the gas station may, instead of a dinosaur, have a giant rooster made of scrap metal. you will take almost as many pictures of it as you did of the dinosaur.
-an alaska licence plate in georgia, headed south on 75. you will wonder if they are lost.
-there will be hay bales, round and taller than you are, if you are in the right season. or the wrong season. there are always more hay bales. occasionally the hay bales will double as enormous pumpkins and grinning snowmen.
-in the mountains, there are goats. or maybe sheep. the sheep/goats will lick your cars and look wonderfully strange.
-in the mountains, there will be curves so sharp and so treacherous you will swear you can see your own tail lights in the dark. the locals will call them “kiss your butt curves.”
-each region has a letter that they will drop from their words. gs disappear, rs will be rolled over, os become stretched and round. you will speak, and the people will smile and ask you where your accent is from.
-the fruit you get from the tiny fruit stand may be the ugliest fruit you have ever seen in your life, but it will be so sweet and so wonderful and you’ll never have anything like it again

I’m reading up on chocolate frog cards in the Harry Potter universe, for reasons, and-
“Came up with the ever changing floor plan.”
Really, Ravenclaw? Really?
“You know what this school needs? To not make any sense-”
“Rowena, I don’t think-”
“Exactly, you don’t think. I’m brilliant and this is perfect. Moving staircases, walls that think they’re doors-”
“But how will the students get to class?”
“They’ll have to figure it out.”
“…”
“Everyday. They will figure it out everyday. My students will live in a tower and navigate these stairs every time.”
“The stairs move! This doesn’t seem safe…I think I’ll put my common room in the basement, Rowena.”
“Ditto. I think the dungeons would be safer…”
“…My kids will brave these stairs. I’ll take the other tower.”
#Rowena snipes that ‘cunning’ means Salazar’s students should be able to handle the moving architecture#Salazar snipes back that ‘cunning’ means knowing when and how to avoid unnecessary bullshit#meanwhile Godric is just yelling PARKOUR! and Rowena is all That’s Not What I Meant#Helga would like her students to make it to class on time and without any broken bones#ninety percent of the reliable secret passages were a team effort by Helga and one of the others#to make sure the house elves could get around all right (via @mzminola)
#i feel like the collaboration was probably hufflepuff and slytherin#in the only time they ever worked together#helga: students and house elves can move safely!#salazar: more places to hide snakes#salazar is like we should make these accessible to people with no legs#helga is like i mean i agree but why are you being so nice about this#salazar is like no reason hey I’m just gonna make some of these rely on snake language for fun#do you think a fifty foot snake would fit in this passage asking for a friend (via @dinosauriaawesome)
i’m literally crying this is 100% what happened
(hey tumblr please don’t delete the previous people’s comments like you did the last time i added someone’s tags to a post mmkay)
No but that’s actually so clever okay like the people who live in the castle would get a general idea of the patterns and how to move around efficiently but like for anyone planning on attacking it would be impossible to infiltrate like how the hell do I attack the headmaster when I can’t even find the bathroom why the fuck am I in a chemistry supply closet okay these stairs went to the main hall but now I’m on my way to the broom closets holy fucking shit fuck leonard SAID the dorm was on the left of the three headed hippogriff but I’m here and it’s just a painting of a man with a donkey face is this a fucikgin joke leonard do you think this is funny because it’snot. its not okay siri how the hell do i get to the nearest anything “here is: the nearest painting” like fuck you siri
actually considering all this, the changing floorplan probably worked exactly as designed when it came to the battle of hogwarts in the late 90′s. the invasion was towards the end of the term, so the students, especially the renegade students in hiding, had the full term to master getting around the school quickly, quietly, and efficiently. the invading deatheaters were generally their parents’s ages, and hadn’t been back to hogwarts in several decades, if they’d even attended at all. so, while the adult invaders easily outmatched the adolescent defenders in strength and skill, hogwarts was a lethal maze to the deatheaters, while it was home to the kids.
rowena knew what the fuck she was doing.

You guys, he’s back!
I didn’t know that I needed to see this until I saw it.
To put it simple. You DONT have to act tuff. To be a tough guy. haha
So I looked this guy up. First, not shown in the first gif is the fact that he’s just wearing regular pants:
Also, he’s written a sci-fi novel and has spent time in Africa building a school and orphanage for abused teenage girls. So, good for that guy.
