It's July now.
Hey so as the economy continues to get worse in the next few years, gambling companies are going to go extra hardcore predatory as people become more desperate. Yes, even more than they already are. You have to promise me right now you're not going to fall for it. No gambling, okay?
This is going to be especially bad with prediction markets and sports gambling, and it's already really fucking bad. But it also goes for loot boxes, blind box collectables, trading card games, and ESPECIALLY gacha games.
We are seeing this right now with Kalshi's sudden push towards people watching reality dating shows like love island, as they are starting to tap out on their first big market block - young straight men into sports/politics. They are moving on towards young straight women now with the dating shows thing but they will start diversifying into other niches soon!
Do not start gambling. A friend of mine used to work for a bank's anti-money-laundering dept and they'd review flagged accounts for suspicious withdrawals, frequent charges, etc, and sometimes it was fraud but other times it was just severe gambling addicts absolutely hemorrhaging money. It is not worth it!!!
At this point, I truly think that MAGA are just like... anti-fun.
They don't like our rainbows, they don't like cosplay or costumes, they don't like cultural festivals.
Like... fun for them has very strict rules. Like it can't be too outlandish, it has to be about the country or have religion attached to it somehow, there's an itinerary. Like... the Freedom 250 thing has a baptism pool. The fun has to be a specific way or its out of line.
I'm in a picture with my friends, having fun at a parade in our dance costumes (which no one seems to complain about when they're on a stage) and they're like... "freak show," "lunatics," etc... and its like... yes? And?
Its a parade, youre supposed to provide a spectacle or you end up like the Christmas parade we were too queer to be in. (It was a requirement by the organizers to have the float themed around the birth of christ somehow. It was the saddest parade ever and I dont know why i wanted to be in it so bad.)
I bring my colorful flow props to everything. People spit on me, tell me im going to hell, preach at me while im just vibing. Like they see all the fun im having and have a visceral reaction to it. Like... how dare I make my lifestyle look fun and carefree in front of the impressionable youths? (My lifestyle is fun and carefree! I have a life that I love outside of my sexuality, but I also love being out and queer.)
A comment thats going to stick with me for awhile was 'i don't care if they're gay, but why do they have to be weird?'
And like... i am weird, yeah. For sure! But children's media for most of my young years was about embracing weirdness, so i figured it was okay. Plus, performers are often weird.
Im having fun in a way that doesn't fall into the three acceptable categories of fun: faith, country, or family.
And its like... I wonder if there's a correlation between MAGA and certain rules-based symptoms, you know?
This is why I'm so adamant that all of you adults have got to get more whimsical and start playing again as soon as possible. Being un-whimsical and believing in cringe is going to kill you or worse, make you a Republican
someone on reddit shared texts of her and her husband's exclusive english dialect and it's beautiful
a linguist is analyzing it
I love when a meme gets so many steps away from its source material that it would be completely incomprehensible if I didn't know what today's date was
Question. Why are y'all doing this in March
To make sure we get the meme jn the fridge to dethaw in time.
more pyaari everyone say hi to pyaari (not my video credit to @withpyarri)
I think my favorite thing about this is that the cat's so comfortable with it. Pyaari is alert and possibly a little confused, but perfectly chill with everything going on here up to and including sticking things on her face.
there needs to be a word for the like grief that comes with not being able to engage in something that’s supposed to be fun because of a marginalized identity. im not talking about big things or intentional/knowing discrimination, i mean things like not being able to play the sport you wanted in school because there was no girls team. not being able to relax by reading fantasy because you’re black or jewish and the orcs and goblins are racial caricatures. not being able to watch a comedy show because you’re intellectually disabled and they keep using a characters intelligence as a punchline. not being able to go shopping with your friends because you’re fat and their favorite stores don’t carry your size. not being able to watch your favorite youtuber anymore because you’re deaf and they stopped including closed captioning. not being able to find interesting content of your favorite character because you/they are a lesbian and very few people care about them. not being able to take cute beach photos with your friends because you’re trans and can’t find a bathing suit that fits right.
just all of these little individual problems that have solutions!! because you can play a different sport, you can consume different media, you can make the fan content you want to see, you can do something else with your friends!! but it just wears you the fuck down because you’re constantly faced with these tiny obstacles and unintentional reminders that you’re marginalized even when trying to do something for fun. like im sure there’s a term for this but i’ve never heard it. just the grief of knowing that there’s no uncomplicated fun for you, that you don’t have the same opportunities to enjoy yourself.
It's scary to be transgender in the world right now but if you're transgender I love you and we have to stick together and keep fighting and keep living and keep loving
hey if this storm ends up being as it looks, you need to take it seriously, particularly if you're in a southern state and not used to storms like this. i'm not a professional but my new england experience for losing power/etc is:
fill your bathtub with water before the power goes out. in an emergency where the pipes freeze, you'll have semi-clean water. you can use this water for your pets, to wash dishes, flush your toilet, and other small important stuff. if you have no bathtub, fill as large a bin/pot/etc as you can find.
air is the best insulator. if you can tape plastic over your windows and major drafts, it will genuinely help. (they have kits for it, but i've used trash bags and duct tape). blankets/tarps/etc also work. leave space between the covering and the window - the layer of air protects you. shove towels under your doors.
in a true emergency, you can ball up newspapers and shove them into your coats/pants/etc between your base layer and your coat. it won't be comfortable but it does insulate a little better.
have an emergency plan for your pets, particularly animals like reptiles that need constant heat to survive.
the weight of the snow and ice will be an issue. plan accordingly.
black ice is a bitch. if it looks "wet", assume it is frozen. actually just assume everything is frozen for a little while.
if you do not have a generator or other emergency power source, DO NOT bring outside-use heat sources (like propane stoves) inside. you can gas yourself and die.
instead, if you truly have no heat source: focus on insulating a small amount of space in your house - a few rooms - and bring as many bodies and supplies in there as possible. do not break insulation if you can avoid it. you are a ~100-degree object. make your safe space into a blanket fort. you may go stircrazy but it is better than freezing.
if you have a fireplace you never use, check the flue and the chimney before the storm holy shit. i am not kidding about this. do not just start a fire willy nilly. you will burn your house down.
relatedly, if you start a fire and notice smoke is billowing back into the house: stop the fire immediately. your flue is closed or your chimney is backed up. you will burn your house down.
keep the fridge closed as long as possible; it lets the air out. but honestly like, my family has used snow as a fridge a lot. stuff that needs to stay cool will be less of an issue than things that need to get warm. plan accordingly.
most canned things can be eaten cold, but check the label. if you have a little sterno fire, it can go a long way.
if you develop a headache and feel weirdly sleepy, you may be forced to open a window. you might have carbon monoxide poisoning.
every year people die while shoveling snow. it is actually not very safe as a chore tbh. you need to go slow and take lots of breaks. you should also 100% wait until the snow has actually passed, only because when it starts shifting and undoes all your work, it will piss you the hell off.
have drinking water somewhere easily accessible. a lot more of it than you think completely necessary tbh.
fill your gas tank. it will help prevent your lines from freezing.
if you have a battery-powered light that's not very strong, put it under a water jug, it'll throw more light. idk why it works but it works.
just because you know how to drive in the snow doesn't mean other people know how to drive in the snow. better to just not.
your device probably has a "low power mode". probably best to just keep it on asap rather than be taken by surprise tbh. the battery will last longer.
great news to fanfiction writers: it really is better if y'all take one bed and huddle together for warmth. do not strip out of your clothes, though, i have no idea who the hell decided that was the smart thing to do. you want to keep at least a layer of leggings and a tight shirt on. the goal is to find the fine line between "warm" and "sweating" - you want to stay as dry as possible for as long as possible.
your hair, eyelashes, and nosehairs can freeze. just from personal experience: try not to rub or touch them, it can snap your hair off and then you'll be very sad.
hypothermia is a lot faster and more evil than most people expect. watch for shivering, confusion, and unexplained exhaustion. if someone stops shivering, that is not always a good sign. if you think you/someone you love has hypothermia, warm them up slowly. often this is through rubbing/friction (or a heat source if available). keep them awake and try to feed them something.
same for frostbite: don't just shove your hands into a fire. warm any affected area slowly. fair warning, as the blood recirculates, it will hurt :(
those blue rubber examination gloves under other gloves can help even very-cold hands stay warm.
liquor is not a good idea to drink right now, sorry beloved. but vodka/rubbing alcohol does work as an excellent de-icer if you need something small done quickly (like a lock/door handle). it's just, like, expensive in comparison to other things lol
"i don't eat that much anyway i'll be fine" that's the devil talking. you will not be. you will also probably be burning way more calories than normal. let the soft animal of your body eat a bunch of delicious snacks.
good luck i love you stay warm out there everyone

I went to a market recently that was absolutely swimming in appropriation of First Nations religious and cultural items.
I'm talkin white people selling rattles and dream catchers, white people banging First Nations style drums, white people teaching talking stick workshops, that kinda shit
So what do you do when you see this crap? How do you show your disapproval in a way that makes them give a shit?
I'll tell you what I do. The point is to show them that appropriating Indigenous cultures will lose them customers.
When I see fakey Native art I say something like "Oh wow, you make dreamcatchers! What nation are you from?" (Use tribe in the states)
I used to ask point blank if they were Native, but I'd nearly always get some Cherokee great grandmother bullshit, or even "I'm not sure, I could have some Native in me!"
Most of the time they don't know what I'm talking about, because they're not Native and don't know that this is a very normal thing to ask when meeting another Native.
When they ask me what I mean I say "I mean your tribe, which First Nation are you from?"
This is the point where they sheepishly mumble that they are not First Nations.
I let my face fall and say something like "Oh. That's disappointing" or "Wow. Unfortunate."
I let it get awkward. And then I leave, shaking my head in disapproval.
You may feel like you need to educate them on cultural appropriation but here's the thing: it's 2025. They know. Brenda the middle class reiki shaman is FULLY aware that her smudge fans are stolen culture. She doesn't care. The only way to make them care is to hit them where it hurts: the wallet.
Make them think that you would have purchased what they are selling if it was AUTHENTIC.
If you wanna go the extra mile send an email to the organizers, in your best white people voice, and tell them that you are disappointed that they are facilitating culture theft.
Go out and make Brenda uncomfortable!
not to be a snitch, but if this is happening in the US you can also straight up report Brenda for a fine up to $250k under the Indian Arts and Crafts Act.
If Brenda has a sign marketing the items as 'Indian' or Native American, get a photo! Reporting only works if Brenda is marketing it in "a manner that falsely suggests it is Indian produced, an Indian product, or the product of a particular Indian or Indian Tribe or Indian arts and crafts organization." The fact that she's appropriating is sadly not enough for a report.
This is also only relevant for the USA, which I have never been to and do not live in.
hey, is it okay to do this as a white person? I go to a LOT of markets and art walks, and I have absolutely seen white women doing this type of stuff
It's not just okay it's HIGHLY encouraged!
White people are much more likely to listen to other white people than they are POC
take a shot every time an american liberal uses the turn of phrase "not perfect" to refer to a political candidate's explicit intent to enable more mass death of foreigners and immigrants.
and queer people
the interesting thing here is that in the context this post was made, it was expressing frustration at primarily queer liberals for using democratic candidates' token support for queer issues as a reason why those same candidates' open willingness to dehumanize and kill brown people both within and beyond the united states' borders shouldn't discourage progressive voters from supporting their campaigns. not to say that queer people (and most specifically in recent years, trans women) don't get left behind in pursuit of some sort of 'lesser evil', but i think the tendency to redirect discussions of other minority groups being harmed back towards queer issues is a big part of the unthinking homonationalism that's prevalent on tumblr and probably an instinct that's worth trying to curb.
see i do have to acknowledge we on this hellsite sometimes boil autism down to its most quirky traits. like when i said even if antivax rhetoric was true i'd rather have autism than be unvaccinated i saw a lot of people in the notes going "yeah being autistic is awesome it just means having special interests and liking routines haha" and i had to Bite My Tongue. because no that is not always true. but also like. i love autistic people of all forms and levels of support needs and if you try to treat it like a tragedy that needs Fixing in my presence i will perform some kind of naruto jutsu on you. this is a promise.
