My C-section experience felt completely out of my hands and led to much pain and suffering. But there’s a way for women to make more empowered decisions about giving birth.
“Birth feminists simply believe in a woman’s right to make empowered choices about her birth experience. We believe a Mom should have evidence-based information about all her birth options, which all too often does not happen. We believe a Mom should be supported through her decision-making process and into the birth experience itself, which all too often does not happen. And we believe every Mom is entitled to her own choice, without judgment, whatever it may be,which all too often does not happen. “
The trouble is making the case and raising the funds. "Preventing things isn't sexy, and you don't get as much credit for it, because people often think that it wouldn't have happened anyway," he says. "You don't see the benefit in the same way you do for fighting diseases that are happening. Public health is a much harder sell."

If you look closely and often enough, almost everyone will have a little nodule that can’t be completely explained, a lab result that is a bit off, a heart tracing that doesn’t look quite right...
We’ve long assumed that if we screen a healthy population for diseases like cancer or coronary-artery disease, and catch those diseases early, we’ll be able to treat them before they get dangerously advanced, and save lives in large numbers. But it hasn’t turned out that way. For instance, cancer screening with mammography, ultrasound, and blood testing has dramatically increased the detection of breast, thyroid, and prostate cancer during the past quarter century. We’re treating hundreds of thousands more people each year for these diseases than we ever have. Yet only a tiny reduction in death, if any, has resulted.”

Texas boasts the nation’s third highest HIV infection rate. It is also home to the fifth highest teen pregnancy rate, and the highest repeat teen pregnancy rate. Despite years of empirical evidence proving the ineffectiveness of abstinence-only programming in schools, Texas seems to think continuing to perpetuate these programs in their state in place of public health science backed HIV screening and prevention is going to change something.
I can honestly say I absolutely love my job. In the course of everybody’s jobs there are always difficulties and frustrations and bad days. But I work every day feeling, though maybe exhausted and needing a break for the evening, feeling like I helped women. That, to me, makes it all worthwhile.

The U.S. has a shortage of family physicians, but many med students avoid the specialty, stigmatizing it as uninteresting.
"I remember one sub-specialty gynecology rotation I did, where one of the tasks that fell to me was to explain to the patients that the doctor I was working with wasn’t a “normal” gynecologist, so she could only be of help with a few specific conditions, not with their annual exams.
For those specific conditions, she is one of the country’s foremost experts. I learned a lot from her, and she’s a kind and talented physician. But I could sense how frustrated the patients were, bouncing from specialist to specialist, seeing doctors in disjointed fits and spurts. Specialized care doesn’t always mean better care. For rare and complicated ailments, it is. But not for keeping people healthy, or for preventing disease in the first place."
