The Uninvited (1944)
Dir. Lewis Allen
The smell of death, the smell of decomposing flesh, pervaded me, body and soul. It seemed to me that I had always been saturated with the smell of death and had slept all my life in a black coffin...

“In peace I will lie down and sleep; for you alone, O Lord, make me dwell in safety.” (Psalm 4:8)
Lincoln Cathedral. February 2015.
This anatomical skull bust dates to the early modern period, approximately the 17th or 18th century CE, when anatomy and art were closely intertwined in Europe.
The sculpted face can be opened to reveal a real human skull beneath, combining realism with scientific purpose. Materials include wood, plaster, and bone, carefully assembled to educate and impress.
This object reflects a time when understanding the human body was both a scholarly pursuit and a confrontation with mortality.
