one of my favorite this american life segments of late is about the people who played orchestra pit for phantom of the opera on broadway and how, like, a sizeable majority of them had literally been playing the show since it opened in 1988 (on broadway. I know it opened in 86 on the west end, you random pedants, but I am specifically talking about broadway musicians) because their contracts stipulated that they'd have jobs throughout the show's entire run... but nobody anticipated that phantom would become the longest-running broadway show of all time.

and none of these people wanted to walk away from a guaranteed job, so very few of them ever quit. they just kept doing the same show eight nights a week... for twenty or thirty years... and by the time it finally closed last year most of these musicians (who had been working together for DECADES) hated each other and really really fucking loathed phantom. I can't stop thinking about it. it's indescribably hellish to imagine but also the funniest thing I've ever heard in my life.

thinking about why hometown seems to be cut off from the rest of the world. i think it would tie things together thematically in a nice way if hometown was operating on something last-thursday-esque.

the dark worlds operate the same way, after all. when a dark world is created, so is its past - even if it's only existed for a few minutes, the characters within have lived whole lives.

it's just like any story. the world and characters only exist on the pages, and only started existing when you began reading. but when they talk about their past, suspension of disbelief allows you to believe in a time outside the pages - a backstory.

that's why dark worlds are like that. they're an allegory for fiction. deltarune is a game about fiction, after all. and hometown is no less fictional than the dark worlds. it would only make sense that the same amount of last-thursdayism would apply to hometown.

so, the idea of a world outside hometown, and a time before last thursday, is an illusion - but everything about a story is an illusion. it all requires your suspension of disbelief to operate.

so, if the story can make you believe that there is a world outside hometown and a time before last thursday... then there is one. it's your belief that makes it real, as with everything in the story.

the weird route is all about breaking the game. and when you wrench open a game and look at its innards, it stops being a story, and instead becomes nothing more than programs and pixels.

noelle already hardly sees anything as real anymore. and all of this game-breaking has now culminated in her attempting to glitch out of the game borders, in search of something new.

but you won't find a satisfying story by digging through glitched maps and unused content. there was only ever one story for you here. if you want more from this world, you'll have to make it yourself.

This is the best description I’ve heard for this method, I always thought it was bullshit because I never heard a description that actually explained how to do this other than “tap your head 20 times”.

I have anxiety-induced hissing, which sounds/feels different from sound-induced tinnitus (which I have also experience). Sound-based tinnitus actually sounds like you’re “hearing” something in your ears, whilst the hissing I have feels like it’s “inside my head”, if that makes sense. But this technique still helps!!
