I take off my trench coat. There’s nowhere to hang it, so I toss it on the floor. And then my shirt. I go into the bathroom to unstrap my wings. I’ve been using two belts. The leather chafes, and the buckles bite into my chest, and if I pull them too tight, I can’t breathe. But if I don’t hitch them tight, my wings work themselves loose and push out the back of my coat—which is too fucking hot to wear in the middle of summer. Honestly, it’s not worth leaving the flat.
I won’t have to deal with this after tomorrow.
The wings will be gone completely. (His intern wants to dissect them, and I said that’s fine.) I’ll have long scars down my back when it’s over. Dr. Wellbelove was sorry about that, but I don’t care—I’m already covered in scars.
“Please, don’t make a thing of it,” Agatha says, turning toward us and shaking her hands in the air to dry her nails. “Simon, I can do yours too if you want. Then you can match.”
I frown down at my hands. Magic forced the World of Mages to accept that I’m trans, but I try to avoid anything that will give people ways to poke holes at my identity. Concessions to femininity feel like chinks in my armor. But the varnish is nice. Agatha’s nails are always a shade of pink and primly shaped. Baz’s black varnish just made him look cooler. Penny reaches out and takes my hand. Her nails are a light purple now, but she’s always trying new bright colors.
“Anyone can paint their nails,” Penelope repeats. “Even boys.”
