Last year, I befriended a Catholic seminarian. We've gotten to be pretty decent friends. Seeing as he was staying in town for the summer and I wasn't, I entrusted him with caring for my plant.

He did a wonderful job, but as he was returning my plant to my custody, he explained "I watered her every other day, I gave her new dirt, moved her into the sunshine, prayed the rosary-"

"What?"

He looked at me, confused. "Isn't she a plant you pray with?"

"No," I said slowly. "She's a prayer plant. That's the... colloquial name of the plant."

Upon seeing his stricken face, I realized something went wrong. Turns out, this entire time, he's been including my plant in on his prayers and leaving her near icons.

Listen, totally cool. My plant becoming Catholic is a great deal for her not dying over the summer. But now I must navigate this interfaith household. Keep me in your thoughts.

There're 1.4 trillion reasons to hate Elon Musk, but if you love science and space exploration you should hate Musk more.

His siphoning of public and private investments into his failure of a space company pushed space exploration back by years or decades.

Every failure of his "Starship" to even reach orbit is time, money, labor, fuel, etc. that could've gone to a much better cause with NASA or even a different private space company.

the post going around about how you can't automate various fabric processing/sewing tasks is largely not correct and i think suffers substantially from treating technology as separate from economy/policy/research funding/capital. & have a half-thought-out response but wanted to plant a small flag first. you can cut fabric to a pattern in a variety of more or less automated ways. & furthermore the extent to which automation is or is not happening is partially to do with legitimate difficulty of robotic manipulation of flexible materials & textiles AND partially to do with the cost of automation vs cost of sweatshop labor. i think it rly devalues the role of globalization of the supply chain & exploitation of labor in the global south to just hand-wave textile & clothing automation as impossible when it is not so
