one thing that really annoys me (potentially enough to drop the whole story over it) is when someone creates a sci-fi/fantasy culture that's matriarchal, and then goes and gives a 'reason' for the matriarchy. like oooh the women can do [x magic] or have psychic powers, and men don't, so they're stronger! makes it seem like patriarchy is the Natural State Of The World written into our biology, and therefore upsetting it should mean women have some inherent superiority this time (instead of men, like they do in real life, apparently). 😐 ok well i don't think that's true.

there are some movies where people will be like “I think it needed more female characters :/” but I think the lack of female characters makes complete sense because this is dumbass guy behavior. this is a fool’s plot that the average woman would have handled better or totally avoided. the hubris of men was a core element of the film. not that women cannot be blinded by their own hubris but there is a reason guys are more likely to die in bizarre freak ‘accidents’. I say this as a man. it’s why horror movies with a final girl make sense, the average 22 year old guy would be sooooo certain he could take the slasher in combat and die badly.

like how every single autistic person seems to have some version of what I call the impermeable membrane which is like this sense of a veil or film or sheet of glass between you and the world. Like you can describe it to someone and they’ll be like oh yeah my impermeable membrane/sheet of glass. like people will talk about how autistics talk and move but I think a lot of autistic people have a shared visual language as well. or how autistic people have different relationships to gender the way queer people do. That gender is performed which takes agency and skill and creative choice. Even the concept that a lot of autistic people have interests that don’t match their aesthetic or aren’t limited to one subculture creates a unique type of cultural dissonance that would be a notable feature of any other artistic culture or movement. Like autism not just being something that acts upon you (as it’s described by everyone else) but something that’s expressed through you with agency and skill

The importance of his doctorate in molecular biology aside, the way in which Ryland Grace approaches an alien life form with curiosity, compassion and kindness is indicative of his lived experience as a teacher in a middle school.

It is one thing to be able to teach effectively, and another to manage a variety of different individuals needs while maintaining engagement. Every skill that Grace uses in his meeting of Rocky, and building a relationship with him, whether he remembers or not, are skills a good educator and mentor uses.

To not assume ill intent. To approach first with curiosity. To explain difficult concepts in a palatable way without condescension or malice. To empathize with one's situation and acknowledge how it may shape one's responses. To exercise patience. To adapt and shift gears in the face of uncertainty. To remain calm in the height of stress and remain a leader.

Grace as a scientist yes, but as a teacher, maintaining an openness to not only work with Rocky, but to also embrace his differences and utilize his strengths to find creative solutions that benefit both of them.

History is fraught with disputes and wars driven by ignorance and sustained by fear of unique cultures and experiences that are different to our own. It is practically in our DNA to reject or fear that of which is different to us, and so it is not weak to trust or to be kind. It is harder to be these things, because the opposing forces come so effortlessly.

Grace's inclination toward 'flight' instead of 'fight' is not an indicator of weakness. It is preservation. It is learned behavior. To take a step back, recalibrate and approach again. You do not win students over by being a fearless dictator. You win them over by treating them like people, and acknowledging where you yourself have room for growth. Ryland Grace is a coward for many reasons that define his narrative, but being trusting and kind are not among them.

Humanity owes its salvation to Ryland Grace the middle school teacher.

What helped me write trauma better is remembering that the nervous system learns predictions. If danger used to come after quiet, calm can feel threatening. If kindness used to come with a price, kindness can feel suspicious. So healing is not just “they know they’re safe now.” Healing is the slow, annoying, deeply unfair process of teaching the body that the old prediction is not always the present truth.
