Does anyone else have the feeling we're experiencing the downfall of F1 as we speak? Not just the sport but like everything around it as well? Insane fan behaviour, the wag culture, the lifestyle... It's all becoming so disconnected from the real world?
I don't know whether it's a downfall per se, but I do think it's reflective of what's going on in the world otherwise.
As another anon said the other day, f1 isn't the fun escapism anymore, and the lifestyle and excess and waste of it all is actually off-putting. I also think the conservative and restrictive development of f1 makes sense looking at the world otherwise. I haven't followed f1 for years or decades, so I don't know what it's been like before, but at least in the world, we see a turn towards conservatism after this very liberal wave.
I do think the sport is at danger of losing fans that are actually in it for the sport. It's becoming a spectacle more than a sport, and Miami has highlighted all of the bad things about it. I wonder whether the European races might reel that back in a little, but there's little hope, if I'm being honest. In their pursuit of new and young fans, the sport didn't care how they're going to get the fans, and for what reason.
And once the traditional fans that understand both the sport and sports in general leave, you're going to be left with the awful, awful people anons have experienced, and / or these children on twitter. Races continue to become less and less accessible to people, and instead we get influencers and celebrities attending races. It's so frustrating.
It's always really difficult to predict these things, but my gut feeling is that we're experiencing this hype and peak and almost bubble of it all that's inevitably going to burst or change down the line. It's simply not sustainable. Not this year, or next year, but I simply don't believe that the sport can keep up doing what it does now over a long period of time.
