happy autism awareness day to all the girls who had “ friends” growing up who were actually bullying them . to the girls who always sat alone in the grass and wondered why nobody wanted to talk . to the girls who spoke to animals like they were listening . to the girls who created a little world in their room . to the girls who always felt ashamed for how deeply they love things and how passionately they enjoyed media . to the girls who covered their ears when they were overwhelmed by everything . to the girls who carrying a special thing around to feel safe . to the girls who never understood what they did wrong to feel so lonely . to the girls who were diagnosed later in life because they weren’t little boys who liked trains. you are so special and beautiful and you’re not worse for it, you love deeply and that is so wonderful please never try to push that down . I LOVE YOU !!!!!

dear people with OCD: the next time you have spiraling & intrusive thoughts, what-ifs, or catastrophizing scenarios, I am sending a cardigan-wearing 46-year old NYU professor directly into your brain and he says "Aaaaand scene!!!" and he claps his hands slowly. and he says "Wow. Wow. Powerful stuff. Evocative imagery. A little bit post-modern, a little bit hysterical realism in the vein of Don Delilo but let's pause right here." and you will recognize your thoughts as a perplexing avant-garde film shown to an audience of 15 liberal arts students who are now trying to get a good grade and sleep with their professor.

My favorite part about 1931 Dracula is that there are armadillos running around Dracula’s castle.

Apparently in the 20s and 30s, armadillos weren’t very commonly known, so moviemakers would use them wherever they needed some creepy, ‘demonic’ animal running around. So there were a lot of armadillos in early filmmaking, and it was often people’s only source of reference for armadillos.

Fast forward twenty years to when the father of the biology professor who told me this is driving out from the east coast to see his son in California. Crossing the southwest at night.

An armadillo runs across the road.

He comes to a screeching halt and the Thing Of Evil, which he never knew was actually a real animal, trots the rest of the way across the road and vanishes into the desert.

Apparently it shook him up rather a bit.

I can actually explain some of this.

First the armadillos. Yes, a lot of people had never seen them but there were books and photographs and nature magazines had been around for over a century. Todd Browning (the director) was born and raised in the American South, so he was very familiar with armadillos and he happened to like those freaky little bastards so that’s part of why they’re there besides the reason already provided. As for the bee, I have a suspicion that wasn’t meant to be Dracula’s pet but actually one of the vampires of the castle like the three women who the movie calls “the brides” even though the novel suggests they are Dracula’s daughters.

See in the novel Dracula could turn into a bat, wolf, mist, summon storms, and even rats (which he does in one scene of the Coppola movie). So it’s not that big of a leap to assume his ilk of vampire can become insects. Dario Argento (in his 2013 Dracula film) gave Dracula the power to turn into a seven foot tall mantis and an owl. I kind of liked the owl transformation. The mantis was unintentionally comical. So it’s possible we were supposed to think that was a full seven foot tall coffin with an oversized bee coming out of it.

Oddly, I think the silent film of Faust by F. W. Murnau had better special effects nearly five years earlier…
