Obviously, they wouldn't get along right off the bat. Not much in common really, nothing to bond over if we're looking at canon exclusively. Mike's a Wheeler, Billy's not the biggest on those. Billy totally also did shove one of Mike's besties up against a wall one time. So, you know. Bad blood all around.
If it were to write their interactions
I'd keep it to small moments here and there
If I were to write it, it would start with a new earring of Billy's Mike absolutely falls in love with. Mike, the st4 emo lesbian version of himself would've 100% wanted puercings and jewelry as a whole. So he keeps staring. And staring. And when you stare too long at people, you notice things.
So I'd have it so that Mike notices little things he wouldn't have other wise. Like Billy calling Steve princess and Steve only huffing in response, or Billy buying Max extra ice cream, or Billy ruffling El's hair. You know, small things. I'd have it so that this breaks down Mike's hostility around Billy, defrost the ice just that little bit.
If I were to write it, I'd have Billy notice Mike's reading choices. Billy's a literature nerd, fight me on it. He reads, a lot, and he has Opinions on literature as a whole. So when he sees Mike lugging around some of Billy's favorites, his interest piqued.
I'd have it so that Billy thinks Mike's lugging them around for the attention -- performative bullshit, he thinks. Then he hears Mike infodumping to Lucas about it and I think Billy would have two realisations then. 1) Mike for sure actually read the book. 2) Mike's opinions are trash and belong in the gutter, allegedly.
Yeah, they'd be snobs about it.
I can see Billy getting so pissed off he has to stop Mike's tyraid to tell Mike how stupid he thinks he is. Mike will be all confused like "?? You read books??" And then forget about that revelation entirely when Billy starts countering every point Mike was making and Mike will get all defensive and they'd be at it for hours. Dumb nerds honestly smh
If I were to write it, I'd have them sitting together at the library one day, nose deep in whatever book or paper they were working through. Man buns in place, reading glasses propped, walkemens strapped on (indie and metal playing in their respective walkemens).
It'd be totally accidental. They would go there on their own, hoping for a private space to do their work (Mike's house is super loud with the TV and Holly, and Billy's place, well, yk) and wow! Guess who else decided to do the same goddamn thing!
I can see them passing ideas around a little too. I can sre Mike picking through Billy's brain for dnd campaign ideas, and I can see Billy enternaining he kid because he hasn't had the chance to spitball shit like that in a while.
It would have to be hours into their study session, but I can see Mike trying to jot down ideas for a campaign and getting frustrated when he cant think of anything. I can see Billy getting annoyed of Mike's groaning and huffing, and peaks over to see what's going on to find the words "Next Campaign ???" Scribbled on Mike's notebook. I can see Billy suggesting something, then Mike getting all shocked like "you know dnd???" I can see Billy shrugging, "I live with Max and im friends with Munson, so."
If I were to write them post s3, in a world where Billy survived his stint with the Mind Flayer, I'd absolutely have Mike respecting the shit out of him.
While I can't see Mike getting the warm and fuzzies for Billy even after that, I can see him devolop a genuine respect for him. I can see Mike actually taking into account Billy's opinions when coming up with plans, something I don't think he does for even Steve, so. I can see him letting his guard down around Billy more too.
Because he kind of, you know, saved El's life. And El is one of Mike's ✨️ people ✨️ so anyone who defends or, idk, sacrifices their life to save one of Mike's friend is automatically a cool dude in Mike's eyes.
If I were to write it, that's probably as far as their relationship would go, realistically. I can see them snarking at each other, but more in the sense that Billy likes ragebating him, while Mike falls for it every single time.
I can also see Billy picking up on Mike's heart eyes to Will, and I can see him subtly trying to hint to Mike to give it a shot (Mike is shit at social cues so he won't pick up on it, but Billy made the effort so). He's not gonna go out of his way and try befriending him, at least I can't personally see it
In the sphere of literature nerds, they would definitely recommend books. Billy would absolutely never lend any of his to Mike, and Mike on principle alone won't do it either. They'll sometimes actually read the recommended stuff. And they would totally shit on each other's tastes. Shit talk each other any chance they got.
I want so badly to say that I think Billy could play an older brother role to Mike, because theyre my faves and I want them to get along. But me personally, I can't see it. Steve being Mike's queer mentor the way Robin was to Will makes more sense to me than Billy being that for him. I can't see them relating on a familial level either. Homophobic dads, sure, but not much else -- I am totally ready to ve swayed on that one though!
Either way! We need more shit with them in it together honestly. It might just be my personal niche tho lol
