Kinda fucked up that when I saw Minions in theaters yesterday and watched the previews for everything coming up, the only one that looked remotely interesting was the next feature from Illumination

The new Disney & DW ones looked just so..... Idk, saccharin??? It's something I've been whining about for awhile now where I feel like more and more, the flagship animation studio movies are becoming more about the spectacle of the effects rather than the storytelling or pacing or anything else that would make them a good movie. And you can't argue with me that that's the point because we've watched decades(s) of these studio making great movies that DID hit all the marks, so the apparent disinterest in doing so now doesn't feel great with the contentification of media in recent years

And ofc the animation SHOULD be front and center but we've gotta to a point now where it feels like they are just layering it on like those nightmare milkshakes you see that have jars of frosting & sprinkles & an entire cake slice on them like

it's just too much!!!

Hexed (Disney) fucking looked like an AI generated movie; not at all implying that it is, but the design of it looks like what you would get if you put "Disney witch woodsy colorful" as the prompt. The MC also looks like another Elsa and I am so fucking sick of seeing the same damn face in every damn movie they make (except this one is "alt", as described by an NPC in the trailer :/)

Forgotten Island I'm rooting for cuz I'm v excited for the Philippines to have this one, but idk it kinda just looks like they are chasing that K Pop Demon hunters vibe??? Loud and big expressions and quirked smiles and etc etc. At least the villain looks like she has potential to be cool and I do like that they are putting a female friendship front and center, but we'll see. DreamWorks lows tend to be lower than Disney ones (not a compliment to Disney btw they feel like plain oatmeal most of the time) but at least they are always trying new shit and aren't so predictable. There are glimpses of who I assume will be the rival/villain in Hexed and I feel like I already know exactly what's gonna happen to her.

Anyway the Illumination one (Not Alone? Idr the title) wasn't particularly exciting but at least it looks like it has a story/relationship it wants to build up and has moments of quiet. There's also 3 little gummy looking alien creatures as the disruptive element of the movie and they've got fun and simple designs that use color very playfully

AND LIKE, THAT'S KINDA THE CRUX OF THE ISSUE, INNIT??? You put so much exaggeration in absolutely every aspect of the movie to make it bombastic and dynamic and like a glitter bomb went off at the Wonka factory, and suddenly it all just looks like noise and noise these days is starting to feel more and more like content slop. Not Alone is set in a relatively normal environment and the little aliens that come down are designed with v simple but interesting color palettes, and that's great! That's all you need!

Anyway the new Minions movie was actually pretty fun especially if you have an interest in the early days of Hollywood. Also I really liked how they did the credits??? Very playful and intentional and silly, like the rest of the movie.
