I spent nearly four hours out in the darkness after work and came away with maybe four keeper images thanks to the beautiful clear skies. This was my last image of the night, right before I got back in the truck. I finally found a good foreground for the 50mm! Hiking up to Liberty Cap in the day is great and all, but it’s a completely new experience at night. No matter how many times I do it there always something that surprises me. Doing it with all this camera gear is a whole different ballgame. Went out to battle the clouds again last night. I’m calling this a victory. The core hadn’t yet reached the spot in the sky I was aiming for but this was the only break big enough to see it! I didn’t expect much with the cloud forecast and went out mostly to just practice and to not be on the couch. Three hours watching the sky on the edge of a cliff is better than Netflix on most days.😉 I’m excited to spend some more time at this spot on a clear night. Blue Hour on Liberty Cap Mesa. I’ve been out twice in this past week hunting Milky Way and was mostly skunked both times. I may be able to salvage something out of Saturday night at Otto’s Trail. This was a snap from my iPhone the night before, on my way to wait for the darkness. The puddle here was no more than two feet wide. Something about it just struck me. It almost looks painted. Caution: Rambling ahead! For a long time I’ve thought I should only post my best pictures from my “real camera” to this account. I would put most of the iPhone stuff on my personal instagram and try to not cross the streams, as it were. Truth is when out hiking, I treat the iPhone and the Canon equally. They are both tools in my arsenal to be able to capture my vision as best as I can. I restarted my photography journey with just an iPhone so I’ve developed habits over the years to maximize its potential. I just want others to share in my adventures, no matter which digital eye wins out. Long story short, I’ll be posting more “snaps” from my phone in the future. Here’s one. Inside the Mee Canyon alcove presents a lot of challenges for dynamic range, focal length, and proper exposure. I tried this same composition with the Canon but my brain and body were so drained from the hike that I didn’t capture everything I needed for the blend. I feel very fortunate to have something like this “on my way home” after a day of hiking. I don’t often stop to take photos at the overlooks on the monument, but my timing was good driving back from Mee Canyon just before sunset I couldn’t resist. Even though the color in the clouds didn’t pop off, this view never disappoints. Two weekends in a row? You better believe it. Thankful for clear skies again Sunday morning at Miracle Rock. This is a composition I have done before, but this time I used the setting moon to illuminate the rock and cliffs behind. After the moon was gone I took my sky exposures and blended them together in photoshop. (after a few painstaking tries) I’m pretty proud of this one. It’s what I had envisioned two years ago when I first tried the shot. Sky conditions and free time finally had a meeting with me last weekend in Palisade. I’ve made six attempts times so far this season to get my first Milky Way of the year and have been skunked every time. After not shooting it all last year too, one thing is for sure: I am out of practice! Both in shooting and post processing. The past few months for me have required a very difficult personal transformation, which I am proud to say I am making my way through brilliantly, one day at a time. It hasn’t been without missteps and plenty more of the journey remains. I’ve been outdoors much more lately and am excited to start sharing content again.
