The main difference with the Crystal Reed tweet is that Hoechlinâs stuff is unfailingly complimentary, even if it edges towards creepy and uncomfortable a little too often. The Crystal tweet was just shitty and unnecessary. Iâm not surprised someone tweeted that - there are tons of people on twitter, and not all of them stop to think about their words - but Iâm appalled that the people choosing the questions specifically picked that one out for her. I was actually angry about that whole video, because the level of questions they chose had to give the cast a pretty terrible (and, I think, inaccurate) picture of their fanbase.
The Hoechlin stuff doesnât make me angry in the same way, but I do feel bad for him. When he talks, you see where he places value, and itâs all on hard work, talent, stretching yourself and trying new things - Stiles is his favorite because thereâs so much variety in his character, and he adores Dylan because Dylan is crazily talented and always changing things up to make himself even better. When he talks about his favorite scenes being the ones with Dylan, I get the sense that itâs because those are the ones where Derek gets to be something other than angry or sad. He relaxes a little around Stiles and has the space to show a wider play of emotions.
Hoechlinâs not at Meryl Streep levels or something, but with the right material and cast around him, he is able to demonstrate a lot of skill. Open Gate was a pretty awful movie, but he actually did a great job with what he was given. And becoming Derek completely transforms him - the first time I saw a video of a Hoechlin interview with him laughing and smiling, I was blown away. I had no idea his face could do those things. TBH, thatâs the moment I started actually loving the show.
So yeah, as much as I reblog photo after photo of his ridiculously beautiful face, I wish more people made a point of appreciating how hard he works, how passionate he is about everything he does, and how eager he is to learn everything he possibly can about his characters and turn that into something believable. Thereâs a reason Derek Hale is easily one of the most beloved characters on the show - thereâs a reason a huge chunk of the Teen Wolf fanbase (including myself) would quit watching if he left - and I really donât think itâs Jeff Davisâs writing. I worry that Hoechlinâs going to get tired of bugging Jeff to talk to him about Derekâs longterm character development, or that heâs going to eventually find himself unable to smile while he talks about finding fun new things to play with in his character. And thatâd be a real shame when you have an actor whoâs willing to give so much.
The thing is, people probably are saying these things about him, but he doesnât get to see them in the muddle of âomg your beautiful sweaty absâ comments that the interviewers pick out for him. Of course heâs gorgeous, but Hollywood is full of gorgeous people. Itâs the other stuff that makes people special.
Shoot, I canât find it right now, but thereâs a tumblr post circulating with requests for positive fanart/letters/etc to gather and give to Crystal Reed. I hope that gains traction, because sheâs specifically said she doesnât look at her tags or comments anymore, after the negativity started to mess with her head. That means the only times she hears fan reactions now is through filters like those promo questions, and when those are so horrible, I have to wonder if she assumes thatâsâŠkind of the high point.
