❝ Nice job breaking it, hero. ❞ [noyesterdaysontheroad]
“Not my fault, genius,” Qaz quipped, holding his hands up. “I didn’t hardly touch it.”

“Something a little dangerous,” Jackie admitted. “But I managed it before, back when I was like, nineteen?”
She stood, feeling the need to pace as she worked through what she was thinking. “The kind of rival we want is someone a little easier to get away from, likes to brag, but who won’t want to admit that they’ve screwed up. We could make it look like you led me right into a trap, then give them the slip and make it look like I’m dead.”
“Okay—and where would this rival come in?”
“They’re the trap.” Jackie’s nerves showed through her smile. “We play them in order to play the Blackstones and leave this whole thing behind us. That’s why it’s got to be someone who likes to gloat: someone who wouldn’t pass up an opportunity to tell the Blackstones they’d gotten hold of their new associate, and isn’t that a shame?”
Qaz straightened up, frowning thoughtfully. "A possibility—what's tricky is they tend not to pay much mind to possible rivals, even the ones who gloat, not unless–"
He paused, blinked. "Unless their principles are in question." Then he looked to Jackie. "Might I ask how your previous shot at this unfolded?"
