furudate’s oikuroo crumbs
Iroh: so Toph, what are your goals in life?
Toph: I’ve been banned from every major city’s transportation system except Omashu
Toph: I don’t know what their limit is but I will fucking find it
King Boomie, having exactly zero limits:
Unstoppable object meets immovable force
[Toph eventually slips up and is captured by the city guard force. Instead of being imprisoned or exiled, Toph finds herself being given audience with the King of Omashu.]
Bumi: Well, well, well. It seems I have finally met the troublemaker who has been causing such chaos with my rail systems.
Toph:…
Bumi: I must say, I am thoroughly impressed with your earthbending abilities. You remind me of myself when I was a lad.
Toph: Get to the point.
Bumi: I see great potential in you, Toph Beifong. I want you inherit my title once I am no longer fit to rule.
Toph: Wait what the fuck
Why wasn’t this Toph’s future instead of becoming a freaking cop. This would have made so much more sense.
My favorite part of this is “when I am no longer fit to rule” because
1. Implying Bumi was fit to rule at any point
1.1 except maybe in the sense that he was completely shredded
2. That he has no plans to die, (nor would death necessarily make him unfit to rule), but that he apparently intends to like. Tuck his arms and legs into himself and just roll off into the sunset.
3. Given that the Earth Kingdom has an actual ruling family that causes some drama in LoK, Toph continuing to cause monarchy confusion is both 100% in character and fucking hilarious.
Toph takes over as King Bumi the second and everyone is like “no that’s not how inheriting works” and Bumi is like “No no she’s right, I did say “inherit my title!”
When toph is no longer fit to rule, she instills bumi (Aang’s son) as her heir and he is known as bumi 3.
Her first act as ruler is to ban herself from Omashu’s transportation system, thus fulfilling one of her life goals.
happy bday to the most responsible adult (also it should say knives not sunglasses :’> …)

given: a less problematic but still problematic fave
>>disclaimers: given is honestly one of my favorite anime and i recognize that it does so much better than a lot of other BL with the usual problematic material. however, there are still some things in given that i just innately have taken issue with that i haven't seen verbalized on a lot of fora, so here's my inexpert take on it; i'm not one to speculate on details, especially for mental illness, but i have a lot of doubts that both mafuyu and yuuki are/were completely neurotypical and functional teenagers
pros- realism
* effective and artistic presentation of trauma and grief - regardless of what mafuyu was like as a person before yuuki's death, his socially atypical and reserved behavior seemed acceptably accurate for someone processing their trauma. (note- i've never experienced nor witnessed trauma and/or grief of this magnitude, but i'm inclined to believe that mafuyu's demeanor falls within the /wide/ range of outward responses to traumatic events.) following this line of logic, i also think:
* semi-realistic staggered reveal of context (for the audience as outsiders) was well-executed. overcoming learned and long-term emotional suppression doesn't happen all at once, so it makes complete sense that the audience, as parties unfamiliar with the situation, learn about yuuki's death and his relationship with mafuyu in bits and pieces out of order.
* the splintering of their friendgroup following yuuki's death. checks out. (see divorce rates after death of a child; i think this can be likened)
cons- portrayal and resolution
* dependency - mafuyu and yuuki/ mafuyu on yuuki:
* manipulation - controversial take, but i read yuuki and mafuyu's relationship as a bit manipulative, especially since yuuki was presented as the dominant one even from their childhood, and while that's technically an acceptable relationship norm, we should remember that mafuyu was and has been made vulnerable from experiences in his early childhood, which i would further argue lends itself well to the previously mentioned idea of (co-)dependency. their relationship may have been perfectly fine, but even hiiragi, who grew up with them, took note of how unusual their dynamic was, and who's to say yuuki was wholly benevolent and neurotypical and sane (without further detail from Kizu). you could also argue mafuyu and yuuki's Very Intense and Passionate argument provoked yuuki into acting VERY RASHLY. of course, they were adolescents, so neither can be held fully accountable for the consequences the way adults in the same situation might be. At the same time, i don't think it's a stretch to say that mafuyu and yuuki should have been the best people to understand each other, so if mafuyu knew yuuki was, by off chance, unstable, then he shouldn't have brought up dying for mafuyu; conversely, (and this is bad reasoning because people who commit suicide from irresolvable mental health situations are never "selfish") yuuki probably would have been able to predict how affected mafuyu would be by his actions if he (yuuki) were at all stable and capable of rational thought and been able to avoid doing anything irreversible. it just seems very odd, potentially almost petty, that yuuki would end his own life that way in particular, not having made amends with mafuyu. it almost makes mafuyu look like the bad guy, especially with the last question he posed in their argument, but i'm not about to make that claim because mafuyu clearly regrets it. anyways i'm just very suspicious and wary of the fact that, without more information for Kizu, yuuki might be made out to be a lot better of a character than he is as we view him through mafuyu's eyes. call me a projecting cynic but that's just my take.
* flawed portrayal/lacking explanation of suicide and mental illness (more on this below w "passive"
* overly simplified recovery - mafuyu should 1000% be in professional therapy there's no way he's going to be fine and dandy even with uenoyama and learning how to express himself. yes certain activities and passions and definitely healthy relations can help people recover and heal, but they can't do everything.
* toxic - akihito. knows exactly what he's doing and has made no move to stop. probably the most straightforward and obvious problematic behavior second only to ugetsu the other instigator
* pining - haruki. you can do so much better bb. (like really. take-chan's right there)
* passive - hiiragi- but what could he have done or said to change anything about yuuki's death? theoretically, not very much if yuuki was severely depressed or otherwise mentally ill, which it's not made very clear that he is, which is somewhat problematic because depression is long-term? so if we try to pin his suicide on depression, we're basically grasping at straws because Kizu-sensei hasn't clarified. i acknowledge that mental illness is often invisible BUT that may not be as common knowledge in cultures where talking about mental is stigmatized cough japan and representation is as much about education as it is art so yuuki committing suicide mere days after an intense argument leaves much explaining to be desired imo
* basically a lot is handled poorly by characters in-universe (which can be argued as realistic, i agree, BUT). this is problematic for a number of reasons, all already mentioned, but for de facto mental health education (okay sue me it's admittedly not the role of anime and entertainment but i think that if you're going to include heavy topics in slice of life anime then you should at least have characters explicitly deal with them properly and as realistically as possible) and healthy representation, given could do better.
also, updates from reading the manga+watching the movie:
* haruki sweet spring bb PLEASE turn on your brain and rational thinking capacity you literally KNOW what's going on and people do NOT change that fast also akihiko slow the fuck down
* yuki's mom what the fuck you're an ADULT there is no place for you to be selfish and impose your will on a child who is just as affected by yuki's death as you are and even YOU knew it left mafuyu all alone im SCREAMING
* okay also shizu getting in hiiragi's personal space in 38 rubbed me the wrong way kyoya and haruhi style. you know what i mean. i just finished the manga so i can't even process it
* that is all thank you for reading
i have nowhere irl to dispose of this information so i am resorting to tumblr but basically i just realized (in the shower no less) that kunikida's ability is a watered-down version of The Book so does that mean everyone should really be going after master carlyle

it has been pointed out that i failed to include a baby paprika squid in this

Nanami!!! He’s so good <3 Adult who cares ^^
I wonder what Yuzu thinks when he sees Nathan's scores at US Nats????
I mean Yuzu puts so much effort in his programs, has so many transitions, listens to the music, the lyrics ("shake that ass" hello?!), picks up the characteristics of the music, knee bend, speed, flow etc. nothing to be desired to earn "excellent" for his PCS...
And then his score is a freaking 103 by the judges because of super strict calling on the spin... (but even then he wouldn't have been at 110 points) and just why???
And then you see Nathan with a hard layout - the hardest possible atm - but then he also struggles with his spins - gets a pass - not even the level dropped - for the step sequence he gets a perfect score (yes +5 by all judges) - his jumps have just basic entries, no difficult exit, nothing happening between the elements at all, characteristics of music mostly ignored, seldom any choreographic movement (besides the step sequence but that's the point of a step sequence), no knee bend, no flow, scratchy over the ice (you could even hear it loudly) and then BOOM 113 points and 47 PCS!!!! (he did even regress in details from Skate America 2020)
And I sit here and wonder why the hell does Yuzu bother with all of this any longer?
...
Neither Nathan nor Yuzu are to blame for their scores of course but I think the contrast in what effort Yuzu puts in to deserve high PCS and what Nathan does to deserve high PCS are two different levels and that's what I am adressing here and where I think Nathan can be criticized. (And I am not even touching GOE here)
And then scores are not comparable, different judges, blablabla...but excuse me it's the damn SAME RULES judges follow so if not 100% comparable it should at least be explainable with the same rules, but it's not. (can you believe Nathan got two 10.0, like c'mon nothing Nathan can do any better???)
I don't take US Nationals scores seriously, but it does have an impact on the international scoring - there are some of the same judges internationally too - and this is why this should be still discussed and this is why it still matters.
____
Tbh Nathan is regressing with each SP. His 2016/17 SP was well made, hardly any crossovers (it's not about counting them but he did other steps than them), some choreographic movements that covered his weakness of speed and flow quite well and matched the music character. Now it's not even trying to disguise the weaknesses and try to get more choreography between the elements, transitions...
I like Nathan as a person but I feel like his sole focus is jumps and I really don't understand it, he can afford to try more, they would hand him the US title anyway and there is no problem - with the content he puts out, he deserves to win. I just wish he would try to at least match the PCS scores he gets...this way and I don't mean that disrepectfully it looks like he is not trying because he knows he will get the PCS anyway...(I believe him when he says he wants to work on it and that he thinks he is not at Yuzu's level PCS wise and in galas you can see that he can work well with audience and music and there he shows character but it's the competition that is judged...and despite his words all you see is him taking more details out instead of putting them in)
I mean why are PCS even a thing at this point, why not go around and say "Nate, you're world champ we give you 45+ without looking" "oh you're Yuzu sorry you already won too much 47 at best and only if you say please - maybe your time has passed" that's how it feels like...
You can scream at me with "oh you're a petty Fanyu" and yes I am a Fanyu but actually I am just tired of it all and I hope that if you look at the PCS rules you understand my point and that it's not to hate on Nathan, but to wish for him to translate his words and work on PCS into his programs.
Here is the PCS chart with rules so you can watch yourself what should be done for "excellent" or even "outstanding" PCS:
