Lots of talk about "bullying wins" and little talk about power and the flow of capital, which is what matters to the corporate bigheads who approve these things. imo a few things were at play here to make them rescind this.
- It was buggy. Tags not showing up for an OP past even an empty reblog did not appear to be intended (or at least, it was not mentioned in the announcement), and is a MAJOR problem. Specifically, it undoes the major update from around 5 years ago which was heavily praised by the userbase (one of few tumblr updates to actually be widely well recieved) which allowed a poster to see tags in their activity feed. If this was the only problem, they could have launched a bug fix. Same goes for not being able to turn off reblogs.
- Userbase unity? Well, maybe. Specifically - the userbase had a swift, harsh, and overbearing response to this update. Most of the complaints were the same: this will exacerbate harassment, this will disrupt the flow of communication, this will make it impossible for someone to maintain their posts. Big names in the tumblr ecosystem came down hard, fast, and with significant concern: if this stays in place, I will have to leave - this place will not do what I need it to do. Much of the userbase said the same, sharing alternate blog hosting sites and doing the thing we always do when this ship looks like sinking. Additionally, their replies and feedback forms were obviously being flooded. This put real pressure on their workers in the office, which puts financial pressure on the company. I think the most disrupting tactic though, was going offsite. I checked out their instagram and twitter comments; they were flooded. This is something we Don't Usually Do when we're just whining about the newest change. Usually we stay here to complain but we make do with the change. This, I think, is the thing that signified people weren't just whining but were actually for real pissed. And then of course...
- Five hours before the roll-back announcement, an article drops. That kind of bad press is the nail in the coffin for a dying company like tumblr. I imagine several concerned meetings somewhere in those five hours.
What do we learn? The answer is not "bullying works" and "swearing at customer service reps is fun". The answer is to remember that online, we are both the product and the thing that creates the value (similar to but obviously distinct from the actual workers of a corporation; if we vanished overnight they'd have nothing). Brush up on your collective bargaining & try to understand why this happened in this way. And don't try to replicate this for every random update that comes next by endlessly harassing them. Take stock of the little power you have and work out where to put it to use. This is still just tumblr.
SVSSS AU where Shang Qinghua's and Yue Qingyuan's Shizuns set up an engagement for the both of them to marry
Yue Qingyuan, who is depressed that Shen Qingqiu now hates him, goes along with it without a complaint, but Shang Qinghua does not want to marry him! He's a soft push over and Shang Qinghua prefers his men, uh, meaner, so he plans to sabotage his own wedding
Right before the wedding date, Shang Qinghua pretends to get drunk and goes over Shen Qingqiu's place to 'celebrate' his engagement. Shen Qingqiu wants nothing to do with him, especially since he's been in a worse mood recently, but Shang Qinghua is able to get him to sit and have a drink with him, where he 'accidentally' lets it slip that there's a demonic wedding tradition of kidnapping a bride to prove they would be a better partner
Shen Qingqiu lets this new piece of information stew, as Shang Qinghua planned, and he hopes that his shixiong makes the correct decision before he is made Yue Qingyuan's husband
On the day of the wedding, the whole sect freaks out because they can't find either of the grooms! Turns out, that not only was Yue Qingyuan bridenapped, but so was Shang Qinghua! By a demon!
Shen Qingqiu and Yue Qingyuan elope and come back to the sect to see the An Ding Peak Lord trying to negotiate with demons to try to get his head disciple back
Here's my recommendations for this year! Pick them up at your local bookstore or public library!

I Shall Never Fall in Love - Hari Conner
George has major problems: They’ve just inherited the failing family estate, and the feelings for their best friend, Eleanor, have become more complicated than ever. Not to mention, if anyone found out they were secretly dressing in men’s clothes, George is sure it would be ruination for the family name.
Eleanor has always wanted to do everything "right," including falling in love—but she’s never met a boy she was interested in. She’d much rather spend time with her best friend, George, and beloved cousin Charlotte. However, when a new suitor comes to town, she finds her closest friendships threatened, forcing her to rethink what "right" means and confront feelings she never knew she had.
Inspired by Jane Austen and queer history, I Shall Never Fall in Love shines a light on what it means to be true to yourself and rewrites the rules for what makes a happily ever after.

Someone mentioned how they were having a hard time creating a world for their fantasy fiction geographically because they kept reinventing the island of Britain, which also happened to my good close enemy George R. R. Martin. I would like to suggest North Carolina. I know that sounds absolutely ridiculous but North Carolina has an awesome geographic setup for a fantasy kingdom, I think. Inhospitable barrier islands, constantly shifting shoals in the sound, swamps with alligators, venomous snakes and carnivorous plants, lots of very flat and somewhat sparsely populated farmland, foothills, mines, mountains full of mysterious phenomenon that were originally very difficult to navigate and people still get lost in today. It kind of rocks.
There are actually 36 carnivorous plant species native to North Carolina, roughly half of all carnivorous plant species in the United States are found in North Carolina! I added the carnivorous plant detail because that’s something I love about the state. We have so many fucking bugs that the plants keep evolving to eat them.
I love that giant man eating Venus flytraps are worldbuilding staples in untamed tropical fantasy settings but they’re actually native to a small region in the Carolinas.
And I agree with the notes, the Chesapeake Bay + Great Dismal Swamp (partially in NC anyway) and the South Carolina Lowcountry would be good geographic additions to this.
I've just been looking over my copy of The Annotated Little Women, which features the text of the original 1868 and 1869 editions, and comparing it with the version on Project Gutenberg, which is the more widely available revised text of 1880.
The revised text is full of grammar corrections, removes slang, and cuts other "bad" language too. Not swearing, of course, but for example, when Jo talks about her frustration with Aunt March in the first chapter, in the revised text she talks about wanting to cry, when originally she said she wanted to box Aunt March's ears.
More questionably, it also changes the physical descriptions of some of the characters to make them more conventionally good-looking.
In Laurie's first physical description, he's changed from having a long nose and being the same height as Jo to having a "handsome" nose and being taller than Jo. (I wonder if the change in the nose description was chiefly to make him a more "credible" love interest, or chiefly to make him look less "ethnic"? At least he's still described as having brown skin and curly black hair.)
Then there's the description of Marmee. Where the original 1868 edition calls her "stout," the 1880 edition replaces that word with "tall," and most of an entire sentence is replaced too: "She wasn't a particularly handsome person, but mothers are always lovely to their children" becomes "She was not elegantly dressed, but a noble-looking woman."
Whether Alcott made these changes willingly or not I don't know. Apparently, they were part of the publisher's effort to make the book more "proper" and "moral" for young girls.
Because God forbid the heroines' wise, loving mother be described as homely or fat!
And some people don't think "pretty privilege" is a real problem...
Random thing for people to consider is that since Laika is the saint of one way trips should Felicette be known as the saint of safe landings since she did make it back to the ground safely

I can't believe home depot literally produced a wildly successful science fiction musical and we all just pretend it didn't happen. on one hand yes it had a boring white guy main character but like.... home depot just... Made it? And it had shit ton of box office sales? and no one even talks about this. this is like avatar (2009) all over again
OK so. After a lot of frantic googling I realized this was all a dream. home depot did not in fact produce a wildly successful science fiction musical. I was on allergy meds and took a nap and my brain simply prophesized this. slightly disappointed because I wanted to watch it.
