FWIW before any more people start making me out to be an essentialist, I edited my tags a while ago to reflect the Meloni and LePen thing. But oh well it’s breached containment now so I guess people will think what they will of me.

My fuller, more nuanced thoughts on this are that because populism does require a position of social privilege from which to be viewed as universal, in order for female populists to succeed they must make something else (usually whiteness and being a citizen/born in a given place, sometimes also cisness and/or straightness and performing those things) so constitutive of their identity that it cancels out their womanhood and they once again become relatable. Similarly, populists from other minority groups will have to pick an extra position of privilege to use to compensate (populists of color might lean into misogyny or having a “worse” racial or immigrant group to focus on demonizing for example). They have to show that they’re more like you than like them. Most people agree on misogyny so if you’re a white woman you distract them by switching the conversation to how all of you agree that racism is good too, for example.

My overall point is that this adds on an extra layer of difficulty which cishet white men don’t need to overcome because they’re perceived as the Generic Kind of Human.

Some current populists who are women have gotten a leg up via family connections and endorsements in particular which likely also helps them avoid needing to attach themselves as someone’s wife to get a platform (LePen is a good example), as with every case there are exceptions.

Apologies to the French and Italians, no apologies for that blogger for not bothering to check and ad-hominem-ing a stranger, and thanks to @notasapleasure to having this conversation with me politely and getting me thinking in more depth about what the strategies of portraying oneself as a populist are for people who are not automatically positioned as “relatable” by social norming to the kind of people who usually find populism appealing.

And yes, OP and I were both thinking primarily of US politics here due to the circumstances (date & location) because the more liberal of our main parties have been fretting for a decade about how women can never win elections because nobody relates to them and especially after 2024 we cannot “afford” to run women. Planter, the rapist Nazi, was chosen for backing over Janet Mills and it does seem like that was in large part for gender reasons because Mills was widely popular but Platner was white and working class, so him being a rapist Nazi didn’t compromise his relatability, so the thinking went. Neither of us said there are no female populists either, just that, (within this context), none in the US sprung to mind.

And I never said that female politicians are somehow inherently better or more moral, just that they have a harder time succeeding in this field of assholery. Literally all of that is projection lol.
