I first watched Midnight in Paris in high school for English class, and it's one of the rare compulsory films that I ended up completely falling in love with. Since then, it's become one of my comfort films. I always find myself returning to it whenever I want to feel a little lighter, more inspired, or simply wrapped in that warm, nostalgic feeling it leaves behind. (Yes, I'm aware of the controversy surrounding Woody Allen, but I'm talking about what this particular film means to me.)
On the surface, it feels like a romantic stroll through Paris, but underneath it's really about nostalgia, creativity, and the dangerous idea that another time, another place, or another version of our lives would make us happier.
One of the things I love most is how it explores romanticising what we can't have. Every character longs for a different era, convinced life would be better if they'd simply been born at another time. It's such a gentle reminder that every generation has its own idea of a "golden age," and that we're often searching for fulfilment somewhere other than where we are. Eventually, you realise you have to make your own life meaningful instead of waiting for another one to arrive.
I also love its message about staying true to yourself and choosing the life that feels right for you, even if it isn't the one everyone else expects. That idea has always resonated with me.
Visually, it's exactly the kind of film I adore. Warm streetlights reflecting on wet cobblestones, jazz drifting through old cafés, beautiful interiors, art, literature, and conversations that make you want to create something afterwards. The fact that it's set in Europe and effortlessly weaves in so many historical artists, writers, and cultural figures is always a huge plus for me. It feels like stepping into a living museum.
If you enjoy films by Sofia Coppola, love wandering museums, collect books you'll probably never finish, or find yourself romanticising cities you've never lived in, I think you'll enjoy this one.
