19, 20, 24 for CJ!

19 — The most random ship you've seen people have with them

Hmm. I feel like I’ve seen so many ships at this point that I might characterize as random, but I’ve just come to expect it, but probably the original ship that shocked me was CJ/Leo?!? It’s weirdly in the top 10 on ao3 mostly just because of one writer who wrote like over 200 fics for them. I don’t mean to be disrespectful but that one is definitely not for me and it was quite a surprise. I do love Leo as a mentor and sort of father figure to CJ though!

20 — A weird headcanon

I think I’ve shared this before, but I have a very particular headcanon about the massively oversized pajamas that CJ gives Josh in season 2. I like to imagine that CJ has given every man in the senior staff those same light-blue oversized PJs, and that how oversized they are depends on how much she thinks she can get away with it. This is supported by the fact that in season 5 (I think) we see Bartlet with a similar pair of light blue button-down pajamas, but they are a reasonable fit (since CJ could never get away with giving the President giant pajamas). But Josh she can mess with to no end. She’s done this to all of the guys but spared Donna and the other women because she’s a girl’s girl.

24 — What do you think is a secret they have that they never told anyone?

My first instinct is something about her family, since CJ definitely has some burdens there. Maybe something about the circumstances of her mother’s death? If I recall we never find out how she died, or how old CJ was, although I’ve certainly seen speculation. I feel like that could very well have traumatized CJ in a way that she might never have processed fully or told anyone. Not that she’s never told anyone about her mother’s death at all, but maybe there are particular aspects of it she’s kept to herself, either because it’s too painful, she never really realized how much it affected her, or perhaps in that way of wanting to keep a little detail for yourself and hide it from the world, something to hold onto that is yours and yours only. Maybe something like the last conversation they ever had, or a piece of jewelry CJ secretly took from her mother’s nightstand, or what her very first reaction was, or something else that she feels shame about. I don’t have any super-developed ideas here but there could be something interesting to explore!

13 — Your favorite friendship they have

For Donna, my favorite friendship is probably with Sam! We don't get to see that much of it in the show, but there's that scene in season 4 wherein Sam introduces Donna as "one of my best friends" and I really like their scenes together in Somebody's Going to Emergency, Somebody's Going to Jail. I enjoy the concept of them staying in touch even after Sam leaves, and of them being about to make fun of/complain about Josh together. Maybe they have some kind of hobby in common, like they have a book club together?

For Toby, I have to go with CJ. Whether platonically or romantically, there's just no denying the importance of their relationship, and their friendship even without all of the nebulous stuff just means so much to me. They have known each other for so long and understand each other like no one else and they are just everything to each other and to me.

23 — Future headcanon

Considering his health, I don't imagine that Bartlet gets up to a whole lot post-canon besides spending time with his family and continuing to be a massive egghead (maybe he gets back into economics research or writes a book?), but one concept I always love is post-canon Bartlet family farm reunions where the gang gets together again. Getting to see him fuss over everyone (and their children!) and return to his classic shenanigans like trivia poker would be so much fun. Also seeing the former senior staff try and fail to address him non-formally and transition into a new kind of relationship, while Bartlet himself for the most part attempts that too but every once in a while can't resist using his influence in self-indulgent ways (picture the scene in 1x05 where he makes everyone stare at the seal of the president and express their enthusiasm for his chili). I also imagine that post-canon he might have a hard time transitioning to civilian life and not know what to do with a certain restless energy that randomly plagues him when he's not too tired, much to Dr. Bartlet's annoyance.

🧐 — Do you spend much time researching for your stories?

Generally I spend very little time researching for my stories, but the one major exception is the Ancient Roman historical AU I wrote last year. I read SPQR by Mary Beard (which was on my TBR anyway) and looked over a bunch of my old notes from my college classes in preparation, and I then plagued my author's notes with a lot of citations. I also put classical epigraphs in each chapter, so I had to put some time into that as well. I do love writing historical AUs: I've written three altogether, although the first two took very little research besides going over old notes, and I'm planning to write another one this August (because I always end up writing them in August) set in Gilded Age New York! I'm reading the complete works of Edith Wharton and drawing inspiration from her, and I have a couple nonfiction books I'm planning to read in preparation as well, so that will hopefully be decently well-researched! But my historical AUs definitely feature a random mixture of historical accuracy and inaccuracy, and I do not shy from artistic license!
