My Arcane hot take is that Victor’s accent makes zero sense. Like in our universe it’s very obviously a heavy Eastern European accent, but where tf is it supposed to be from in the arcane universe? Like we see Victor as a child and he was born and raised in the undercity, but no one else from there seems to have the same accent? My only thought is that his parents must’ve came from somewhere else where they speak a Slavic-adjacent language and that was his mother tongue. But even then we never once hear him speak this supposed second language? Idk it’s just strange I feel like the writers just wanted him to sound “foreign” without really giving too much thought about where he actually came from.

I connected two references: an outfit from a fresco and a real vase. I took the ref photos at the Heraklion museum.
Despite being a tragedy, Hadestown as a piece of theater leaves an audience member with a distinct, bittersweet human hope. This hope comes from Hadestown’s art form as Theater. If Hadestown were primarily experienced as a movie or book, there would be a solidifying of the narrative and possibly, the dissolving of its message of hope. Yet, as productions, directors, performers, musicians, stage techs — as people come and go to tell this story to a hungry audience, the pattern of humanity is kept alive. Each person who has worked on Hadestown has changed it. Therefore, each person who has existed as a part of humanity has changed humanity. Although a pattern of tragedy, it is a living and witnessed one. Its repetition reminds us to keep going, to turn around and lose everything in a moment of weakness and still fall in love again with the inkling that all these mistakes have been made before — even so, this is your song and you must sing, you must dream.
Hadestown thoughts
Thinking about how Orpheus and Eurydice both have choruses that back them up without their urging, but for Orpheus it’s the workers chorus singing the harmonies to give him an ethereal tone- showing how he actively brings the world into tune through the people he reaches, while Eurydice is backed by the fates-much to her dismay and active fighting against- to show how her situation and her outlook follows her around and trips her up/throws her around without her control.
and then- in act two during Wait For Me Reprise/Doubt Comes In, they switch, and suddenly Eurydice is backed by the workers chorus- using their power and voices to call out and bring hope, while Orpheus is taunted and backed by the fates as his outlook and situation set in. Like,, the poetry of their characterizations over the show not only being a direct result of knowing and loving each other but also being mirror images?
I love you stories that know they are stories, i love you breaking the fourth wall, i love you omniscient narrators, i love you circular storytelling, i love you “maybe it will turn out this time”, i love you stories that end by starting over

Feeling a lot of feelings about how Hadestown doesn't present the story as "Orpheus turned around and everything fell apart and there was nothing anyone could do to fix it" and instead presents a story that says "he turned around, he doubted, he failed, but if we keep telling his story maybe one day Orpheus won't" and it's not just about Orpheus as a single character, it's a bout every Orpheus, everyone who runs up against a system they can't change and fails and everyone who sees that failure and gets back up and says "maybe I can change it now" and tries again. That Orpheus failed isn't the takeaway of the story. The takeaway is that one day he might succeed.
Hadestown is the best take on the myth of Orpheus and Eurydice, because all over the internet I see people say, "You're not supposed to think of how he could have succeeded! That misses the total point of the story. Everyone was doomed and there was no way anything could have worked out alright. If you're imagining a scenario that didn't end in tragedy, you're just an arrogant fool. Just shut up and be sad about it"
But Hadestown says, "please please please think of how it could have been. Orpheus would have never looked back if he just had hope, please have hope, he would have wanted us to have hope. If you don't walk out of this theater thinking of how it could have been, we have failed you. go have hope, go see the world in the way it could be, so help us"
