This. I’ve been queerbaited before, we all have. But this is different. I’ve been queerbaited by TV and films that suggest a gay subtext, suggest a gay character, suggest a gay pairing, and even go as far as confirming one character is gay but never doing anything more with the character - keeping it ‘safe’ for the straights.
But this. This finale... it’s different. Because all those queerbaiting shows from before didn’t write draft gay scripts, maybe even literally shoot gay scenes, or mould an entire story arc around a gay storyline, and THEN destroy it all. My dudes and pals, this isn’t just normal TV homophobia/biphobia. This is ‘I WILL DESTROY EVERYTHING SO IT ISN’T GAY’. This isn’t pulling back from subtext or fading out hints of queerness. This isn’t confirming a character is gay and then getting rid of them or never including anything to do with their sexuality in the plot again. This is ACTIVELY cutting out the queerness from a show. This is bending the rules of the show and every narrative it has created in order to cut out the queerness.
THIS ISN’T JUST KILL YOUR GAYS OR QUEERBAITING. We’re wayyyyyy beyond those terms.
This is... i dunno... there’s not even a term... this is basically queer-redaction. It was there... in the text itself... and people just butchered it and cut it all out of the early scripts and then maybe even what had actually been shot.
We’re all struggling because we don’t even have the language to explain the severity of what has happened.
This is censorship. This is old white men in power saying Dean and Cas’s story was too obscene to be put on television, and then censoring the writers, the show, and the actors themselves.
The SPN crew MADE a queer show. But it is just not allowed to be published.
Supernatural was censored. It was CENSORED.
