she is brought up in such a non-judgmental household that she, like with every other aspect of her life, knows there is nothing wrong with her.
she becomes close to padma patil, who makes sure no one bullies her after seeing her first few humiliating weeks. by the end of first year, they are close enough that when in second year, a fellow ravenclaw asks her who she fancies, and she bluntly but politely tells them that the first person she finds herself drawn to is padma patil.
her relationship with padma dwindles a little by third year, and she finds out that ron goes with padma (from ginny) to the yule ball and feels a bit of jealousy. she also catches a glimpse of padma in her gown in the hallway beforehand.
ginny, on the other hand, she gets close with during third year. ginny trusts her and opens up to her in a way that padma never had. as close as her relationship with padma had been, they never were as close or open as she and ginny. at the end of their third year, ginny tells her about the trauma sheād faced in first year. luna had, of course, heard whispers and mentions of it, but sheād always known not to ask. it was only after she was walking away that she realized that she had never had this sort of closeness with anyone else.
she and ginny start dating in fourth year. at the beginning of the year, ginny comes out as pansexual to luna. luna is accepting of course, but when ginny asks about her identity, she tells ginny that sheās never really thought about a label and then describes how she feels. ginny excitedly tells her that sheās demisexual.
they talk a lot during fourth year. of course, with the implimentation of umbridge as headmistress and the start of dumbledoreās army, life becomes hectic. they still find time for each other, and ginny tells luna about how much nicer life is since sheās calmed down about harry.
about halfway through the year, they kiss for the first time. itās after they both conjure patronuses in dumbledoreās army. they sit down to talk about how beautiful it is and about each otherās memories, and neither one really initiates it. they both slide closer until they kiss.
the most notable change in their relationship is that they now hold hands everywhere and kiss quite a bit. however, it soon becomes apparent that their social lives are very different. where luna is quiet and introverted -- close with only a small handful, ginny is bold and thrives on constant social energy (something luna assumes has to do, in part, with her large family).
ultimately, it is luna who ends it. she tells ginny that as much as she cares for her, sheāll never be able to meet those needs, and they part on good terms. she holds no resentment when ginny owls her over the summer to let her know that sheās dating dean thomas.
she doesnāt meet rolf until several years after the end of the wizarding war -- which does not bother her in the slightest. she remains close with ginny through it all and is a bridesmaid at ginnyās wedding and godmother to lily luna -- ginny and harryās child lovingly named after her.
