To be fair this isn’t exclusive to Islam. In Northern India this is also the culture. Some of my Jain classmates have said that they can’t eat the first portion of food, their fathers and brothers get that and the women get the leftovers. Of course in South India, this is considered very backward and shocking. 

It’s still disgusting that they have to do this though.
