FMP Character Animation and Design Portfolio
I had decided from the beginning that I would do a Portfolio on Character Animation and Design for my Final Major Project, however, I had gotten sidetracked along the way. At some point, after talking with Robert and Steve I had thought that maybe doing a 2 minute animation like he had suggested would make things easier for me, unfortunately, it had been a big waste of time because I had gotten stuck during two weeks working on a storyboard, which is my greatest weak point and another 1 or 2 on the backgrounds.
After the final crit for the FMP I decided to go back to my portfolio idea. Of course I didn’t get much time after that, but I managed to still use the characters I had created to insert on my character design side of the portfolio and I even got to make a preproduction on a little episode for them (the original 2 minute short I had planned on doing). After that, I also worked on Kieran’s trailer which covered the side of the animation of my final major project. I also managed to create other character concepts (Flower Girls) and do a rough test animation for one of them. I have managed to do all of this with working almost 12 hours everyday with barely any rest for these past weeks, but I am really satisfied I have managed to do this much and with the quality it has which I find it good for the time I had. My mental health wasn’t okay during the first half of the year so managing to do this much now has had me feel satisfied that all my recent overwork. Everyone has their working pace.
I managed to cleanup most of the first shot of the trailer. I’m still practicing on how to translate an animation from the previous stage to the cleanup since I usually use textured brushes to animate, this required a lot of perfect lines that I am not used to.
I managed to finish all the animation for the shots I was in charge of. I apologise for the colourful shots but that’s how I work and there was no time to paint all the lines black. The fight scene and the lip sync between the two sisters were the hardest ones to animate, specially the fight scene, I thought I was going insane at some point.
For my second and other half of my FMP, I wanted to include animation as it was what I intended to do for my portfolio. I had planned on doing character animation studies at the beginning, but then I talked with Kieran and he planned on doing a trailer for his story so we decided to collaborate. Rute joined as well since it would be impossible for me to animate the trailer by myself. I have always preferred to help people animate their stories than creating ones myself so I was really glad that I would be able to animate another person’s story and style, specially Kieran’s since we had wanted to collaborate on a project before we left University. Kieran was really easy to work with, he wouldn’t take long to get back to us and whenever he would think something didn’t work, he would be assertive and clear. I also did my share of asking something whenever I had doubts and update him whenever there was any progress so we wouldn’t have any problems of miscommunication at the end. This video is showing 4 out of 5 shots keyframes I did for the trailer. I don’t have any experience at animating fight scenes whatsoever so shot 6 was extremely hard for me to animate, I even did two versions because I thought the first version was too slow for the fight dynamic, but both Kieran and Rute said they preferred the first version as it wasn’t too clustered with movements. The lip syncs were also a bit of an experience as well since I haven’t animated any lip sync since the 1st year lip sync project.
I wanted to do at least one test animation of one of my characters, so I came up with one for Daisy. It’s just a rough animation to show her personality through movement.
Character Concept and Design: Flower Girls
Flower Girls
Daisy and Tulip are sisters. They live by themselves and own a flower shop. The main idea for this story is about their lives in this street of family owned stores. The people from this market street dote on the two sisters and are always helping them however they can. These sisters were born with the essence of flowers, their souls are connected to their respective flower, possessing their qualities and small traits. People born with this kind of essence are capable of doing things a little beyond normal humans’ capacity. For them, it is the ability to use the little magic they possess from flowers to create alchemy but they don’t use it since all they want is to live normal lives.
Backstory
Daisy never got along with their parents and their parents didn’t care much for her either as they were disgusted that they had had such an unusual child. She decided she would do everything in her power to be able to get out of that house as soon as she came out of age. The couple never abandoned her as she would provide herself useful around the house. Years later, the couple tried to have another child, but since their possibilities of having children connected to flowers were high, they tried all sorts of sorts of suspicious things to avoid having another one like that. Luck was not on their side. They had another flower child, Tulip and this child was born with a condition due to all the things the couple did before her moment of birth. The couple became miserable. Daisy and Tulip’s life was a nightmare. Daisy had to put a hold on her plans when she became of age because of her sister. For some years, Daisy tried to convince her parents to let her take care of Tulip instead of abandoning her in an orphanage. The couple eventually gave in and they made a contract between themselves where both sides would have no ties with each other.
Daisy (she/her)
Flower Meaning: Innocence, Purity and True Love
Much like her flower, she is very innocent and pure. She never has any malice in her intentions. She is very mature and gets along well with the old people from the street.
When her little sister was born, she decided her whole purpose of her living was to take care of Tulip. Needless to say she loves her sister very much.
Tulip (she/her)
Flower general meaning: Perfect Love
Pink Tulip meaning: Affection, Caring, Good wishes and Love
A very cheerful girl. People usually tend to love her and dote on the young girl. Loves to see her sister getting all flustered and embarrassed whenever she speaks with the daughter of one of the family shops because she is usually really collected. A bit clumsy but she tries really hard to help her sister with the flower business. Loves her big sister very much.
Tulip’s condition
The essence of the flower of tulip was unstable on her soul. Tulip would have moments when the essence would try to manifest, turning her hair a mix of pink and yellow streaks, which is a condition that is described as a “broken” tulip and, in her case, meant a virus was manifesting on her body. This condition was due to what her parents did during the pregnancy, so this state would make her feel very sick and haunted by nightmares.
This condition became more controlled when Daisy gave her a bracelet with her the medicinal properties of daisies. However, these properties are not very suited for Tulip’s condition so her outbreaks still occur occasionally but not as often.
Concept Designs
Even though their designs are based on flowers, I didn’t want to make it too obvious so they could blend in with the other people from the market street, so they rely heavily on their colour palette.
Character Concept and Design: Seni and Nel Part 2
Nel (she/them)
Nel is the type of person to become a leader, very mature and serious, but she also has that competitive side when it comes to playing a game even when she tries to be rational.
Seni (she/her)
Seni doesn’t show much interest in things, but despite not looking like it, she really likes soft and cute things like plushies, but even then, she is very picky about them. She also tend to not think much about things which makes her a bit impulsive. She doesn’t have much patience for things she’s not interested in.
Outfits
I tried to come up with three different outfits for them considering their locations.
They travel by motorbikes and live in an area which forces them to cover up because of some toxicity of the air. so I had to cover them properly. They don’t use helmets because they are an expensive item and they don’t feel the need to have them as long as they can cover themselves properly. They were born in that kind of environment, so the human species is adapting to the toxicity of the air by each generation that is born.
When inside their home, they don’t need a lot of covering, as long as they are feeling comfortable.
Then there is this mix of the styles, which are the outfits I gave them for their little episode at the arcade (which became just a concept). These outfits are for when they are outside their house and not riding on the motorbikes.
Character Concept and Design: Seni and Nel Part 1
Concept
Seni and Nel live in this post apocalyptic world. They often go look out for things that can be used to sell and are considered rare in their times.
Concept Studies
Colour Palette Studies
Since they live in this post apocalyptic world, I didn’t want to make the colours too saturated, so I went with colours close to greys.
