hey silm fans
which elves do you think were the most ripped?
this post hasn’t been up that long but the fact that i have yet to receive any repeat answers just shows that the answer is: everyone
it’s like asking which elf was the most beautiful and the canonical answer is tolkien described like 10 of them that way
OKAY SO
stupidly ripped:
Maedhros - purposefully signed up for an active part in the war effort, had to maintain a level of physical fitness that would enable him to fight in full armor regularly, also probably had to do a lot of physical therapy-type exercises to keep his whole body in good shape after the hell he went through in Angband. definitely lifts, never skips leg day, does weird forearm exercises
Fingolfin - he’s the High King of the Murder Bunch, he’s got to be jacked if he wants to hold on to the crown
Celegorm - works out because fuck you I want to be pretty and sculpted
Celebrimbor - you would think he’s a skinny nerd, you would be Wrong, he trusts exactly one person to work the heavy machinery in his shop and that person is him
Angrod - how do you get a name like ‘Angamaitë’ and not be ripped as fuck?
kind of ripped:
Fingon - fought a baby dragon that one time, was definitely down for a Balrog fight. doesn’t Work Out but is definitely muscular
Glorfindel - blessed with good genes, everywhere
Beleg and Mablung - they’re soldiers who spend their time doing weird shit in the trees, of course they’ve got some deltoids
not ripped at all, sorry:
Thingol - maybe if he’d skipped leg day a little less he could have outrun his well-deserved doom
Fëanor - full of rage, small of muscle
Ecthelion of the Fountain - what’s scarier than a glowing gold elf made of solid “Fuck You”? a tiny little twink who’s like 90 pounds soaking wet launching himself head first at the lord of all Balrogs like it’s no big deal and winning
listen,,,, nothing bothers me more than posts that have Eowyn wear the pants in their relationship and depict Faramir as incredibly feminine, moreso than Eowyn herself
this is genuinely one of the few relationships I’ve seen in fiction where both characters are grave, noble, understanding of eachother and perfectly equal in every way but Tumblr literally can’t handle any heteros where the gender roles aren’t complete reversed so the canon actually feminist depiction of their relationship is thrown out to make jokes about like…. how Eowyn has to bridal carry Faramir when he’s scared of a mouse
ok actually I’m not done about this because I know why Eowyn is framed as “masculine” and Faramir is framed as “feminine” and it’s because Eowyn is war happy and Faramir is a pacifist
which just makes me want to tear my hair out because the reason Eowyn wants to go to war is to die. she is suicidal and the attempt to go to battle psychologically cripples her. Faramir has actually got it figured out and understands war is a terrible, mentally destructive experience
and FUCKING TUMBLR rips all this context away so they can have their Performist Woke Gender Reversal ship
in the process of which they make being war happy an Alpha thing and being a pacificist a Beta thing which is such a perversion of Tolkien’s themes it makes me want to beat my head against the wall
According to literally every LOTR character including Eowyn Faramir is a formidable warrior and a skilled Captain but he chooses not to use his skills unless absolutely necessary, and then with great solemnity
by the end of Eowyn’s arc she adopts his mindset and also believes war is a destructive power because it nearly destroyed her mentally and nearly killed her husband. It killed her cousin and her brother in law.
but no we’re going to ignore all this delicious character complexity so we can have our bland marvel Strong Female Character™
it’s just hard not to think about the fact that in 1915, JRR Tolkien went to war not with but certainly in the same army and many of the same battles as his 3 best school friends, all nicely upper class young men who had never known much loss, and only he and one other came back alive - and a couple decades later, he wrote a book in which 3 nicely upper class young men (and one very excellent gardener) who have never known much loss go to war together, or at least they start out together, and they all come home alive. (Though one cannot bear it, and does not stay.)
What more it wasn’t just losing his friends, he was a commanding officer of a battalion of working class men. All farmers and miners from the same area of Lancashire. He felt affinity for them, but wasn’t allowed to socialize between the ranks due to military protocol and he hated it.
"The most improper job of any man ... is bossing other men. Not one in a million is fit for it, and least of all those who seek the opportunity."
I don’t think it was even 6 months later that he contracted trench fever and was sent home.
His entire command was wiped out in one charge shortly after, the majority of a whole countryside’s youths slaughtered while he survived. Youths who were brave and steadfast, but thought of as lesser than their superior officers while still being the ones carrying the actual battle. Youths who deserved fellowship, respect, and above all to go home and dance with their own Rosie.
“My Sam Gamgee is indeed a reflection of the English soldier, of the privates and batmen I knew in the 1914 war, and recognised as so far superior to myself”.
So anyway Christopher Tolkien literally took 70 boxes of his father’s disorganised notes and spent his whole life turning them into something that could be read, appreciated, studied and loved. Words can’t express how much this man did for everyone to whom Tolkien’s work means something…thank you so much, Christopher. Safe journey to the white shores under a swift sunrise.
Namárië, Christopher Tolkien

middle-earth meme ☆ 4/5 families ☆ the mariner’s family
Thus it is, Ancalimë, and we cannot alter it. For men fashioned Númenor: men, those heroes of old that they sing of; of their women we hear less, save that they wept when their men were slain. Númenor was to be a rest after war. But if they were weary of rest and the plays of peace, soon they will go back to their great play, manslaying and war. Thus it is; and we are set here among them. But we need not assent. If we love Númenor also, let us enjoy it before they ruin it. We also are daughters of the great, and we have wills and courage of our own. Therefore do not bend, Ancalimë. Once bend a little, and they will bend you further until you are bowed down. Sink your roots into the rock, and face the wind, though it blow away all your leaves.

“...where the sorcery of Sauron and the power of Melian came together, and horror and madness walked”
I really like the idea of this area where the power of the two Maiar meet just being so ridiculously charged with magic that it warps reality a little and can't really be handled by any of the Children
Excuse me why is this gold in the tags

middle-earth meme ☆ 7/10 characters ☆ sauron
Sauron was become now a sorcerer of dreadful power, master of shadows and of phantoms, foul in wisdom, cruel in strength, misshaping what he touched, twisting what he ruled, lord of werewolves; his dominion was torment.
