KATABASIS BOOK SPOILERS //

The last 25% of that book is literally my favorite/the most perfect piece of literature I’ve read this year.

I love when a book says “LIVE! DO IT KICKING AND SCREAMING! DO IT WRONG AND DO IT STUPID! BUT DO IT!”

I’m about 15% of the way through Katabasis (just finished the Pride chapter) and my theories have been

1. Peter and Alice were NOT romantically engaged but she flirted with him and he rebuffed her

2. Alice seems passively suicidal (literally from chapter 1) so I think she’s going to try and stay in Hell when it all goes wrong.

3. This is a little far fetched but it’s possible Grimes made moves/comments on Alice that’s why she killed him, bc we don’t know why she was “angry and resentful” that day. But if she thought he only kept her around for that reason, then…

4. Peter wanted to go to Hell because, um…originally I thought he was just there for her but he’s been researching it for a while so, I’m not sure. Maybe he feels trapped into being a magician because he’s good at it, but he doesn’t like it?

5. One of the students, or a huge philosopher, is reincarnated into that cat Archimedes

6. Alice is going to wind up willingly drinking the Lethe water for some reason. Or else, she’s going to get Grimes back and make him drink it to forget that she killed him

7. Theoretically since there’s no hard barrier for someone being ‘no longer young’ the way a heap has no barrier, can’t a magician get eternal youth?

For all that we joke about the action itself, the phm Antarctica scene guts me every single time. Never has an apocalyptic scenario been made to feel so threatening and real by the sheer measures humanity takes to save itself. It's the dead of night, bitter cold air and two people with unfathomable power, someone is crying, it's not enough, the shockwave reaches us in ten minutes. I'll be in the cell next to you.
