So, companies are tracking you no matter what you do, but this specifically is something I care about deeply.
Essentially, when you share a link, sometimes it has extra data that tracks where it comes from and goes.
Opening Spotify, clicking the first item, and using the share button, I get something like open.spotify.com/track/4P0f1HTaA2UwtLJGryNgJZ?si=DBvbfihOSweU1KHj9Mib8w
That ?si=...........…. is the tracker. It tells Spotify who clicks on the link and ties it to you, meaning Spotify knows who your friends are even if you never follow them.

Honestly, the hatred is getting to me too. I mean imo the gods and their existence is what literally makes this series interesting, but whatever. Go trash the gods now Rick I guess. Personally, I think it's a slow degradation of the gods characterization a la RR (+ a sprinkle of generational divide/takes since the OG series seeping over time into an ouroboros of bad takes).
Specifically I'd pin the decline starting with the HOO era where Percy's main "good" godly connections aka Hermes and his Dad are just gone, and the gods we do have range from basially-one-offs (Iris) to Poor-at-Best (Hera). RR deciding to then ret-con Zeus as just an abusive father in TOA. Then, with the live action, he's doubled down on Zeus and dragged Athena back into her HOO characterization (even though its bc the weird split personality thing??) totally ignoring the times they both did help. (Athena specifically is one of the few gods who just friggin showed up to help without a single ask, sacrifice, or additional request but nooooo everybody forgets that huh??? Rick????)
Finally, I can imagine a good chunk of the fandom leaves and comes back in cycles, interacting differently, but like since the fandom is still going our og takes are haunting us. Like, not gonna lie, I read these stories as a kid/tween and totally drank the gods suck fic narratives unironically and moreover uncritically (literary literacy is a skill I was def still learning lol). Bc from my hazy recollections, the gods sucking was a pretty common thing to write AND from a younger perspective do they look worse. But while I never hated them, most importantly I left, got older, and only recently returned. But I can see how old takes popular like a decade ago are still out there, regurgitating themselves, influencing newer fans and now the newest fans whose main source is the Live Action that's only feeding the ouroboros.

This post was a joke and wasn't supposed to be educational or a debate, but it very dramatically broke containment, and the replies have by and large been making the assumption that I was trying to make Claims. I want to close the book on this, so let's actually sit down and discuss some of the nuances here. I promise I'll be polite.
If you're interested in geosciences, please consider reading this! And if you have any additions or corrections, I only ask that you circle me into them. I might cop an attitude sometimes, but I really truly love this stuff, and I couldn't call myself a researcher if I couldn't handle good-faith discussion.
I don't claim any of this as 100% unequivocal, immutable fact, nor do I present myself as a foremost authority on seismology. This is a post going into some of the simple science behind earthquakes and long-term climate change. Let's all learn together.
A SUPPLEMENTARY FIELD GUIDE TO EARTHQUAKES, TECTONICS, CLIMATE CHANGE, AND YES EVEN FRACKING.
A little bit of context first?
When we talk about "global warming", what do we mean? Global warming is a kind of limited (and outdated) term referring to the warming of the atmosphere by human (anthropogenic) influences. Now we understand that anthropogenic influences do much more than just make summers hotter, and the term climate change is much more widely applicable.
What do we mean by "exacerbating"? In short: making worse. Anthropogenic climate change is demonstrably responsible for increasing the severity of natural disasters. In recent years we've seen increases in the frequency and strength of things like wildfires, hurricanes/cyclones and floods, directly affected by our influence on the climate. But what about earthquakes?
What determines the severity of an earthquake?
Earthquakes are a natural byproduct of the cyclic build-up and release of energy along points of weakness (faults) in the Earth's crust. The severity (magnitude) of an earthquake is directly proportional to the amount of stress a fault can withstand (accommodate) before it releases it (ruptures), which is in turn directly proportional to the surface area of the fault.
You can sort of think of it like trying to stretch a rubber band until it breaks; Less force is needed to snap a thin rubber band than a thick rubber band, and you can snap a lot of thin rubber bands faster than you can snap a lot of thick ones.
This is why more severe earthquakes are also more rare; not only do they take longer to build up, once you start getting up in the scale there are just fewer and fewer places in the world where they actually can build up at all (faults that are large enough to accommodate them).

Earthquakes are measured on a logarithmic scale from 1-10, with each step up being 10 times stronger than the magnitude below it. Most of the quakes Earth experiences daily are 1.0-3.0 Mw, which are rarely felt by humans, while extreme magnitudes occur less frequently, taking tens or hundreds (if not thousands) of years to build up.
What exactly builds up an earthquake?
Short answer: Plate tectonics, baby. Longer answer: Stress in the crust is the natural result of how Earth is structured. The rigid lithosphere (crust and upper mantle) is underlain by the ductile asthenosphere (viscous mantle layer). You can kind of think of the lithosphere and asthenosphere like a chocolate shell over ice cream, or ice on a river, or literal crust on bread.

Heat energy from Earth's core causes the molten mantle to move (convect) and this moves everything above it. As the more ductile asthenosphere moves below the lithosphere, stress is applied to the rigid material above, causing it to internally deform (strain) by folding, fracturing and stretching. Because of density and thickness differences in the lithosphere, this movement will cause it to drag and move against itself as well. This deformation creates fault systems, places of weakness where this stress is focused. Think of watching the crust on bread crack as the dough in the center rises, or ice break up on a river as water flows under it.
Tectonic plates are massive chunks of the lithosphere that are thick and strong in their centers and weak along their edges where large fault systems subsequently form, like perforated edges on paper or the burned edges of a cookie. Faults can appear anywhere where tectonic stresses are being accommodated, but the largest, most active, and most felt by humans are located at or around plate boundaries.

This seems pretty self-sufficient. Does the climate really have no effect on tectonics?
It does and it doesn't, but mostly it does. While it's true that the major drivers of plate tectonics come from the fundamental structure of the Earth itself, it's not reasonable to think of these processes as being divorced from the rest of Earth's climate system. Tectonics are an integral part of what made Earth capable of hosting a breathable atmosphere and habitable climate in the first place. But that's a whole other post. In the simplest terms, Earth's climate system doesn't just involve the weather (atmosphere), it also includes our water (hydrosphere), our ice (cryosphere), living organisms (biosphere), and the lithosphere. All of these systems are interconnected to some degree, and changes in one will cause some changes in others, but the degrees to which those changes are felt by different systems vary quite a bit.
The lithosphere is arguably one of least sensitive spheres in the system, at least in regards to direct changes brought on by changes in the others, as the major drivers of tectonic motion come from inside the Earth rather than on its surface. But there are exceptions to this "rule" (like in almost everything in science). One of the biggest ways the other systems in the climate can affect the behaviour of the lithosphere is their influence on something called isostacy.
So you lied?
Well, no. Again, I never intended the original post to be educational or informative. If I'd brought up all the little nuances of the climate system right at the beginning, the original post would have looked like this one. And no one wants to read that. But we're doing it now, so let's move on.
What is isostacy?
Isostacy is a weird concept, but it more or less describes a gravitational equilibrium between objects of different densities. In the geological sense, isostacy describes the way the crust (lithosphere) positions itself on top of the mantle (asthenosphere). Like an iceberg only having a small part of its total mass visible above the water, crustal blocks "float" at different elevations controlled by their densities and thicknesses.

Isostacy is ongoing all the time, minutely adjusting the elevation of the crust constantly. It's sensitive to anything that changes the pressures, thicknesses, and density of the crust, particularly the addition or removal of material on the surface. When an elevation adjustment is brought on by the removal of material this is referred to as isostatic rebound.
You can think of isostatic rebound like pushing a rubber duck underwater in a bath with your hand; the downwards force you apply with your hand against the upwards force of the duck controls the vertical elevation of the duck, and you can push it underwater. But the duck, like the less-dense crust, wants to be at equilibrium (at the surface), so lessening the force or removing your hand entirely will cause the duck to move back upwards.

What does this have to do with the climate stuff, isn't this about climate stuff?
It is! I promise!
Isostatic adjustment is a very slow process that is usually the result of the equally slow erosion or uplift of mountains and other high-elevation parts of the crust (which are climate-controlled by wind and water! Interconnectivity!). But one of the biggest factors in the addition and removal of material on the surface, especially in Earth's recent history (geologically speaking, that's the last few million years), is ice cover.
During glacial maximums (cold peaks of ice ages, of which there have been many in Earth's history), massive amounts of freshwater are sequestered on land in the form of ice sheets. During the last glacial maximum (the LGM, ~21,000 years ago), major ice sheets existed in Antarctica, Greenland, North and South America, and Northern Europe, and collectively covered close to 25% of the Earth's land area. In the present day (an interglacial or glacial minimum), this number is closer to 10%.

Post-glacial rebound describes the process of isostatic adjustment that occurs when these massive amounts of ice, which exert pressure on the underlying lithosphere, melt and the land beneath rises in their absence.

Glaciation is climate change. In the interconnected climate system, the atmosphere, hydrosphere, cryosphere and lithosphere all play roles in the onset of glacial cycles; Air and ocean circulation, tectonic controls on seaways and wind current paths, sea level rise and fall, and ice intensity all contribute to the climate being able to transition between glacial and interglacial states.
So the climate system affects isostatic rebound. How does isostatic rebound affect earthquakes?
A major effect of isostatic rebound, beyond a change in elevation, is a change in where stress in the crust is being accommodated and felt. Quakes are affected by stress, so any major change in stress in the crust will naturally have an effect on them.
There's a lot of evidence to say that, during glacial maxima, there was a reduction in surface tectonic activity in regions that hosted large ice sheets. A good example of this is the Andes, which are to this day an incredibly active volcanic region, but experienced very few, if any, volcanic eruptions during the LGM when they were covered by an ice sheet. After the ice receded, there's evidence for an increase in explosive eruptions occurring in the region, owing to the release of pressure on the crust. Kind of like if that rubber duck from the earlier analogy had feelings, and started gasping for air once you let it come back to the surface.
Won't that happen if we melt the ice caps?
Well, yes, but here's the thing: It is happening. Like, right now. But it's not because of anthropogenic climate change. We are indeed living in a world feeling the tectonic effects of post-glacial rebound, but it's not rebound from what's happening in Greenland and Antarctica in 2025, it's rebound that began nearly 20,000 years ago at the natural decline of the LGM.

So will anthropogenic climate change make earthquakes worse?
Short answer: Yes. Slightly longer answer: Not in a way that matters that much. Long answer: Sure, but we're almost definitely not going to be around to feel much of it. You and I for sure aren't, and neither will our grandchildren or their children. Assuming the ice sheets melt completely tomorrow, it's unlikely we'd feel any significant or detrimental affects of post-glacial rebound on our quality of life for hundreds of years—if the human race is even still here at that point, which looks less and less likely with every passing year.
Increases in quakes in faulted areas previously covered by ice will likely happen, but all the while we'd continue to feel the stronger and more consist effects of earthquakes driven by pure plate motion. Truly severe quakes, like the 8.8 Mw one in Russia this year that inspired the original post, would (and do) continue to occur with or without human input.
They occur because of deep and immutable tectonic forces, stresses built up over tens to hundreds of years, and rupturing along fault systems potentially hundreds of kilometers in length. They just happen, and unlike wildfires and hurricanes, which get more devastating every single year because of the direct impact of humans, there isn't anything we can do to stop earthquakes from happening where they severely impact us. Wildfires can be mitigated by controlled burning and more diverse vegetation, and attempts at cooling the atmosphere and oceans could result in fewer severe storms, but we can't stop plates from moving. They just do that.
That's what I meant by "not directly exacerbated". Earthquakes are always going to happen the way they do, especially the really bad ones, because this is just how the Earth has worked for the last ~1 billion years.
What about fracking though?
This was a point brought up by a lot of people that I think simply misunderstood the premise of this whole thing. But it's worth mentioning.
Hydraulic fracturing (fracking) is the process of extracting gas and oil (hydrocarbons) from beneath the surface by injecting a high pressure fluid into the ground and cracking it apart. It's one of the most environmentally damaging methods of resource extraction done by humans, and it has consequences that can include artificially inducing earthquakes (induced seismicity).
Induced seismicity from hydrocarbon extraction is usually caused by the process of wastewater disposal by injection into the extraction wells. Injecting fluid into the sub-surface puts extra pressure on pre-existing faults that can cause them to rupture prematurely, but there are several controls on this. One, there must already be a fault in the area, so low-earthquake risk areas are unlikely to feel the effects. Two, large faults that produce severe earthquakes don't really co-exist with on-land hydrocarbon targets in the first place, so the resulting quakes are relatively small.

I'm not trying to excuse fracking or any hydrocarbon industry. I firmly believe it's highly unethical from multiple angles, but what I want to emphasise is that in the context of earthquake severity, they are very low on the list of factors to worry about. Most injection-induced quakes aren't felt by humans at all, and those few that are are low magnitude. They're not the kind of disastrous quake that we mean when we talk about natural disasters in a human cost context.
Why does that distinction even matter? They're still causing earthquakes, aren't they?
Sure, but that's not really that relevant to the discussion here. When we talk about climate change making natural disasters more dangerous, we're talking about disasters that are actually dangerous. While you might feel a 3.3 Mw earthquake, the ones that are properly going to hurt you are much larger, and aren't being produced by fluid injection. And while we might be able to slow potential new seismicity in areas with ice cover by stopping ice retreat, that won't affect major earthquake centers that were ice-free long before humans had any say in the matter.
But maybe that's too pedantic. I'm not here to say people were wrong about it being a problem. But, in my view, fracking is more of an evil weather-machine situation, in that it's bypassing changing the climate entirely and instead directly forcing effects. That's bad, but it's not really "climate change". The actual effects of hydrocarbon extraction on the climate are felt in the acidification of the oceans and atmosphere from the burning of fossil fuels, not in an increase or magnification of major Pacific Rim quakes that would be happening regardless.
So is this not a problem at all?
Well, no! As much as I'm speaking to the best of my knowledge here, I'm a humble sedimentologist, not a seismologist, and those in the field will have more nuanced and diverse opinions on the matter of anthropogenic effects on earthquakes. There isn't a lot of definitive research on it at the moment, so there's an ever-present possibility that someone might drop a research paper tomorrow that proves earthquakes ARE super-duper definitely made worse by climate change and we should all run for our lives.
But, in the meantime, this is where it stands with what we know.
In conclusion, I guess: One of the coolest things about earthquakes from my point of view is how inevitable they are. They're a byproduct of what makes Earth so singular in our understanding of the universe; plate tectonics, and they're a constant throughout history. We can't even really predict them that well, only give guesses based on how long it's been since a specific fault has ruptured and how big of a quake we think it has the capacity to produce. The only thing we do know is that they will come eventually, and all we can do is prepare.
Finally, the severity of the secondary effects of earthquakes are ABSOLUTELY affected by climate change, even if the quakes themselves aren't. Tsunamis, floods, and land collapse are made more dangerous by rising sea levels, coastline loss, and changes in weather patterns.
So, we can't really hold the Earth together, and plate tectonics will keep trucking long after we've wiped ourselves off the face of the planet. But we can work hard to reduce the number of things that are directly killing us at fault of our own, and that's definitely worth trying.

you know the obsession with keeping cats indoors is a purely American view of the world? Most Europeans let their cats outdoors without any problems. Many Europeans even think it's cruel to keep them indoors all the time
No, it’s not. European cats aren’t magically smarter and less environmentally impactful than American cats, it’s just more socially acceptable to let them roam. Do you not have cars in Europe? Foxes? Raptors? Stray dogs? Rat poison? Parasites? Diseases? What about the Croydon Cat Killer in England, where the dismemberment of over 400 cats was being investigated, and it turned out that foxes were mutilating the bodies of cats that were killed by cars? Suddenly it’s all ok because it was only horrific death via automobile, instead of decapitation like they suspected? Totally acceptable to outdoor cat owners, who cares if your cat gets hit by a car and dies on the side of the road? There is real concern for the hybridization of wildcats in Europe, Asia, and Africa, but sure, it’s just a US problem. How about how outdoor cats are effectively reducing the protective area of a national park in Poland? How about the increased incidence of lungworms and GI parasites in European free roaming cats? How about this small study from Denmark where 90% of free roaming cats tested positive for GI parasites on necropsy (and the risk was higher in rural areas). Not Europe, but for the sake of completeness, free roaming cats kill ~377 MILLION birds per year in Australia, and 61 million of those kills are thought to be from owned cats. You can also talk to @drferox about how problematic outdoor cats are in Australia. Free roaming cats are bad for the environment, and are put in unnecessary danger. Why don’t you provide enrichment for your cat instead of letting them run around unsupervised where they will kill native wildlife and get sick or injured or die (or all of the above). Humans would also be safer and the environment protected if we all just stayed indoors. No passing of parasites, bacteria, or viruses. No harm to other species. No cross breeding either (if that bothers you). Do you want to stay indoors?
I generally try to ignore responses like this, but I want to address this because I see this ridiculous argument a lot.
The reason that this comparison is inaccurate is because humans have the ability to use reason and make logical choices, but cats don’t. Humans see a car coming and wait until the street is clear to cross. Cats don’t. Humans know not to eat strange food on the ground. Cats don’t. Humans can look up which plants are toxic and avoid them. Cats can’t. Humans don’t eat raw rabbits and rodents that may carry disease. Cats do. Humans who hunt follow laws that prevent them from killing endangered species (besides shitty poachers). Cats don’t.
A far more accurate comparison would be a cat and a toddler. They lack the ability to recognize danger and don’t have the ability to reason that an adult does. I’m sure a toddler would have a great time roaming around the neighborhood, but no one is going to argue in favor of that. People can understand that doing that is irresponsible and dangerous. But no sane person is going to lock their toddler inside and provide them with nothing to do; no one is saying we should do that for cats either. Play with them. Provide cat trees. Rotate their toys. Give them puzzle feeders. And if you want them to go outside you can leash train them. Or build a catio. The options aren’t let them roam vs. never provide them with entertainment. If it is unbearable to entertain and care for a cat that is kept indoors, you probably shouldn’t own a cat.
Would you let your dog roam? Or your bird? How about your rabbit? I’m sure all of these animals would have a great time running (or flying) around the neighborhood, but we generally recognize that this is a bad idea. It’s no different for cats. We are caretakers for our animals, so it is up to us to use our big brains to make logical choices about what they should or shouldn’t do. We have the ability to understand the risks associated with free roaming. Cats don’t. We can weigh risks and benefits before making a decision. Cats can’t.
tldr: Humans have the ability to make logical decisions to keep themselves safe but cats do not.

Sometimes I'm forget that people from other states don't learn about the Donner party or something similar like. Really early in school. As long as homo sapiens have existed, we have had the same emotional and mental capacity as you and I do today. You nailed it. They were US. Even Neaderthals existed alongside and had offspring with Homo Sapiens for many thousands of years.
There's much evidence that cavemen would have had complex spoken language, culture (learned information passed down), symbolic interpretation, and I think they most certainly would have been able to handle holding a baby. In fact I have my suspicisions that an ancient homo sapiens mother may be a more present, attentive, and knowledgable mom than I could be today.
Do not let media trick you into believing we are the pinnacle of humanity. Unilinial evolution theory (google it quick I beg) is BUNK, GARBAGE, and the root of so much evil.

One the most profound experiences of my life was visiting Font de Gaume, which has 12 thousand year old paintings. They use a technique where the horses appeared to run across the wall when seen in flickering firelight. There was a bison the wall staring at us with such attitude, I could practically hear him. I had the most profound feeling of those ancient artists reaching forward to lay their hands on my shoulders. To say, "This was my world." It was a profoundly moving experience.
Some years later, I went to the Orkney islands where we visited a tiny family run museum of artifacts from the chambered tomb at the other end of the farm. They handed me a pestle once held by some neolithci human.They'd worn groves where the thumb and forefinger would be for better grip.
One time, in a French history class, my teacher randomly at the end of the class had all of us draw a sketch of a horse. And we were all like ??? Okay???
At the beginning of the next class, my teacher showed us a cave painting of a horse. And then he showed all of our horses, which he had scanned and put into the presentation.
He then pointed out all the ways that our horses looked similar to the prehistoric horse. Same features, drawn from the same angle, etc.
And then he asked us, "Isn't it cool that you draw horses the same way as someone who lived 20,000 years ago?"
Yeah. That stuck with me for a while.
In Spain, there's a cave full of ancient, ice age era drawings of bison and reindeer and other animals of that period... And one small section of chaotic scribbles just a little away from everything else. These scribblesv were so incomprehensible, they were originally just called the 'Panel of Enigmatic Signs'... Until it occurred to someone that drawings only three feet off the ground probably weren't made by adults.
Scientists are now pretty sure the scribbles were made by kids ages 3-6, more or less on their own. The adult cave artists were probably doing what any modern parent might do when they want to keep small children out of their hair for awhile: they gave the kids some drawing tools of their own and a small section of wall to work on, out of the way but still close enough to keep an eye on them, and let them have at it.
What's most charming about the whole thing is the way the cave scribbles look exactly like what you'd find on the wall of a preschool today. Artistic styles vary widely across different times and cultures, but child development is as near to a universal human experience as it gets.

Alright, let's break this down.
OOP realizes his personality is the reason he can't get a date, so he sets out to change his personality to be more appealing. Specifically, he copies a fictional character who's more liked online. Makes sense, he's been copying manosphere incels before this, so we know already that this is how he learns to act like a person.
Breaking down his attempts at flirting:
He deletes his old profile, specifically citing that he now has the profile of a "pathetic wet rat of a man." This includes: an interest, what he's been reading lately, a picture of him in nice clothing, and "zero attempt to seem attractive or confident" in his own words.
Based on manosphere and incel circles, we can deduct that "seeming confident" likely meant "acting like an alpha" or being an annoyingly overbearing asshole with far too much self importance. "Seeming attractive" is, therefore, likely to mean that he was attempting to "looksmax" or whatever they call it now, and appeal to very basic forms of traditional masculinity as a crutch for what he calls a "very ugly" appearance. Mind you, he did show us a character that looks exactly like him, and no manosphere podcast or incel forum is going to call that man attractive by their standards.
Next, we get the gal reaching out. Based on his reaction to her making the first move, we can deduce that he's never been the one approached first. She asks about his reading material, politely and (we can assume) genuinely worries for his health, then makes a connection to her own life. This is how normal humans interact with each other.
OOP is so unbelievably flustered by this that I'm scared to ask how he was approaching women before. He says that he types in a "pathetic" and "honest" way, using the words interchangeably. Being honest is a dangerous step towards being cringe, and he's "tightrope walking" between the two. This is how he views talking about his health, family, and hobbies. He views speaking on his interests as inherently negative. Being "aware" of his family's health issues and how to be proactive about his health is cringe. Mind you, he's deliberately not telling her that he was doing "autistic research" so we can assume that his definition of "cringe" is "showing an earnest interest in things that spark curiosity" which is... A take.
Next, the two of them have a multiple day back and forth, talk about their lives and as OOP continues "being whimpy" she continues to reply. Clearly, whatever he thinks of as "a wimp" is what this gal thinks of as boyfriend material, because she starts to drop hints about going on a date, which he doesn't pick up on. If repeatedly mentioning a really great coffee shop is too subtle for him to even pick up on, I worry what he thought was being "direct" and "confident" all this time.
The gal then takes charge again and directly asks him on a date. This causes OOP to have a genuine panic attack for 35 minutes.
He's had tinder for a while and never gotten a date, so we can assume he's been unbearable for a decent while prior to this, and now his first experience with a girl being interested causes "a full system shut down" for over half an hour. In that time, the other party recognizes she might have been overbearing herself, and backs down, likely assuming he wanted to remain friends or she came on too strong.
OOP then reassures her with a classic "no its okay I'm just so shocked you like me that I completely had a full system break down for like 30 minutes" which, if I'm honest, does sound kinda cute. Clearly, this is her "type" so to speak, and she eagerly looks forward to their date.
On this date, OOP dresses nicely (in his cosplay gear. I guess) and mimics the mannerisms of Viktor Arcane. A quick search and some time wasted shows me that Viktor is somewhat fidgety, often drops and resumes eye contact, and uses one hand for gesturing when he talks. Though that last part is because Viktor uses a cane. He then says things that are "mortifying" because of how honest they are.
So to recap, we can assume that OOP showed up for his date dressed nice, visibly nervous, and was open with her. In fact, he seems to think that being honest at all is some kind of repulsive turn off, from a guy, that is, because he isn't even questioning it from the gal he's talking about. This is some incel weird law where men have to dress casual, be overly confident, and closed off.
No wonder THIS is what got him attention.
He basically managed to copy a fictional character so well, he became a very basic first date experience. He wore nicer and more professional clothing, looked nervous but engaged, and tried to be as honest with her as possible. He talked to her about his life, family, and interests. He told her about his day, talked about hers, engaged with her directly and showed interest. He waited for her to make the first move, then eagerly accepted, and clearly, he was exactly her type, because she reached out first on top of being the one who asked him out.
Yeah, I'm not sure what they're teaching in incel schools over on 4chan, but that's very basic Dating 101.
TL;DR: Local incel discovers that being open, sharing interests, talking casually, and genuine honesty is not considered pathetic, but in fact how normal humans often act in romantic situations.

I mean, as someone who as worked in a zoo, this is fairly true.
Obvious disclaimer that you shouldn't have wild animals as pets.
But like, cheetahs are the only large cats that keepers will do free contact with. Hell, even most small cats don't get free contact. (Because small cats can be VICIOUS. They'll have a baby pallas cat wearing thicker gloves than when handling an owl. Because small cats can just be vicious.)
Like I think the only other cat at our zoo where I've seen free contact with was servals? Because I know they've used servals in shows to demonstrate their natural jumping ability. But I know servals can sometimes have a mean temper as well. Meanwhile they'll do the cheetah run and afterwards put the mic by the cheetahs and it's just like an engine with them purring. It's fascinating to watch when the message in every other large animal is "no free contact because it's dangerous even when they're born in captivity".
Legit if any wild animal could be adapted to a pet it would be cheetahs lmao. Only problem is they can be skittish and very anxious and that's why they're often raised around dogs in zoos to gain confidence.

Yeah! I don't mean to be off-topic if that's how this long reply comes off, but I'd like to expand the field of vision a little to contextualize Brienne's ugliness. For fun. TL;DR: Brienne is ugly.
Even before movies and talkies, there was an association in storytelling between protagonists, royalty, powerful people and beauty. Film, in chasing profit by casting the most beautiful actors of their era or often even defining what would be considered "beauty" for the remainder of the era, perhaps exacerbated this or perhaps merely slotted into existing convention comfortably.
Whatever it is that colors our imaginations as we read books, the prevailing bias is that all these Lannister, Stark, etc. women must be the absolute most stunning lookers, even if they are not described as such. It follows then, in the reader's mind, that the women these books describe as the "most" beautiful, come from this already exquisite crop, truly crème de la crème. (Idr & idc who this applies to in ASOIAF. Let's say, Cersei.)
And it's all well and good to enjoy the romanticized vision of a story, whatever. But when we're looking at "What does this story say about us, the readers? What does it say about the real world?" it might be worth to remember that fantasy beauty isn't how the world "really" works.
So... I'm thinking about the men in the books (but also savvy matchmaking mothers and grandmothers lol), who might call one woman more "beautiful" than another. These are men with power, who want more power, so if they're not stupid about achieving their (or their parents') goals, then they'll not even consider women of a lower class or financial situation as beautiful. "Attractive," sure. "Favorite whore in a particular establishment," absolutely. But the lower bound of "beauty," among these upper class characters will be dictated by the most uninspiring-looking eligible bachelorette (or marriageable widow) they've ever seen. That's going to be their rock-bottom "plain, but wealthy/influential" measure of a woman's value.
Meanwhile, the upper bound might be impressive, but can easily be underwhelming. Cersei could look like our idea of "plain" but if she's got all her teeth, the best clothes money can buy, and if fair (but not white) hair is still massively en vogue from east to west after the long reign of the Targaryen dynasty/influence on the perception of "beauty," and most importantly, if she is all those things and just slightly more comely than every other woman anywhere near to her in rank, then yes, she's going to win that Westeros's Sexiest Woman award every. single. year. It doesn't matter if side by side with literally some random merchant's wife, Cersei looks decidedly less attractive of the two. The merchant's wife, even if plainly more desirable to anyone who has eyes, simply doesn't qualify as "beautiful" in the same way because of her class status.
Brienne might not be from a "major" house, but she is, to some extent, owed her due as a woman of noble birth. Much of her appearance should be possible to hand-wave as irrelevant. She'd come with a decent dowry, a close relationship with her father who holds an island of great value to seafaring. One day, she will inherit that island. Even if it's privately whispered that she's no looker, even if it's whispered that she's ugly, the intelligent response to that by any serious man who wants anything of what her father has to offer would be to never be associated with such talk, even if he secretly plans to lock her in a tower and acquire a mistress immediately after the wedding. Like, yeah, she's ugly, but she has status. She is inherently more valuable than any woman of lesser rank.
Or she should be, anyway. But that's not what we see. Brienne has experienced no such deference except from the woman-unaffected Renly. She's consistently subject to cruel words and actions, her honor and by extension her father's honor given no regard. All as a result of her looks.
If you place Cersei (our example of "crème de la crème") at a fairy tale-level of "all noble women are exquisite beyond compare," then it would make sense that someone rather butch, dumpy, towering, freckled, plain, or fond of swordplay, whatever, would experience an unusual amount of rejection and abuse. Someone possessing more than one of those qualities would experience what Brienne has lived through.
But if you take Cersei for what she really most likely is — a decently good-looking woman with status, and keep the complete break of decorum that Brienne has been subject to, despite her being Lord Tarth's only child and heir, which means a valuable isle for maritime business is on the table...
Brienne is ugly. She is so ugly that no one but family friends and gay men can be trusted to maintain true courtesy around her, courtesy she is owed by birthright in this society, a society whose basic striation is defined by which courtesies are due to whom.
Can you love a woman who is so irredeemably ugly that every social influence you have ever been subject to since birth agrees that's she's not worthy of an ounce of your respect? Can you sign up for a lifetime of mockery onto your own hide by choosing to love such a woman?
Social pressure is not a negligible phenomenon. The character of Brienne asks: How strong is your stomach for peer pressure? Can you imagine her uglier than your idea of an "unconventionally attractive" woman? No, even uglier. Yes, uglier than that. Yes, if you still choose to love her at this level of ugly, everyone will be cruel to you for your choice, for the rest of your life. Can you still love her now, just because she's "good"? Not perfect, mind; she's not a saint. She's just good. She possesses rare qualities you personally hold in high esteem. And she's very ugly. Is loving her worth the social stigma you will inescapably invite into your life, on top of any stigma you already experience? Are you being honest with yourself?
This isn't a test of virtue or goodness, it's just a mirror.
Brienne is ugly. Why are you flinching at the thought?
Alright so if you don't find pride and arrogance a flaw or disagree that certain characters are greedy you are disagreeing with the backbone of the morality in the Silmarillion. Sorry but this is one fandom where morality is so entrenched that to disagree with Tolkien is to miss the point of the story itself.

Like, can I disagree that women are the intellectual inferiors of men and still understand the point of the story? Can I disagree that it’s okay to refer to orcs as ‘degraded and repulsive… Mongol-types’ and still understand the point of the story? Can I ship characters and still understand the point of the story, or is believing gay people are a natural part of the world totally incompatible with True Understanding of Tolkien?
But it gets worse! What if I think the Valar were wrong to bring the Elves to Aman? Then I’m certainly missing the point of the story, right? Except Tolkien himself thought that at one point. In some places he writes that the Noldor were right to leave; in other places he writes that they were wrong. In some places he writes that Galadriel was blameless in departing; in some he writes that she rightly fell under the Doom. In the Book of Lost Tales Manwë forbids the Noldor from leaving or talking about their desire to leave; in other works Tolkien tells us that the Valar definitely wouldn’t do that. It’s starting to look like Tolkien doesn’t understand the point of his own story, poor sod.

Guys, queers. Specifically my fellow queers.
I work at a library. We do this thing where, every so often, we weed the collection. It hurts to see books go, but it's necessary to make sure there's room in the library for new materials.
I have seen so much support for the library in text, and I've seen folks pass around those beautiful "queer your library" flyers. Keep doing that. That's great. Nothing wrong with that. But you HAVE to turn your words into action. We MUST remember to actually go to our local organizations and libraries and actually, with our own fucking hands, interact with these materials we want to see more of.
My branch is medium-sized for a library, maybe a little small. We don't have as many materials as I'd like, but we have fundamentals. Tell me why, even with all the verbal support I've gotten from my local community for the library as a resource for our LGBT+ community, every single trans biography and a good chunk of our vaguely queer theory books were on the list. This isn't a scheme to take the books off the shelves, it isn't another bigoted American governmental push. The only thing we look at when we weed is how long it's been since the last time the item was checked out.
Three years.
No one in my community interacted in any meaningful way with the few books on trans life and history we physically had on the shelves for three fucking years.
I promise you the materials you want and need are there, but this isn't a horde. This isn't a static safety net. You have to use them. You MUST use them or, in the future, maybe in three years, they *won't* be there anymore.
This isn't a vague post, there's no one person I'm hinting at or calling out. I'm not even talking directly to anyone who's directly in my line of sight. I just want everyone to hear this. Big library, small library, whatever. Doesn't matter. Please, we cannot be losing our shelf visibility like this.
