I have an idea for an AU for no dungeon DCC:

Carl does in fact take Donut when he leaves and he starts using social media to pay for her. We still get the Princess Posse! They would do numbers on social media. Ex-military man who has a cat that sits on his shoulder, not to mention his voice, if he could gain a little traction he could make bank to pay for Donut.

He absolutely should do a follow me on “Donut’s Journey into the Dungeon” aka the outside on a leash. We could definitely translate some of the mobs into irl stuff. Like the Goblins are children. Rats are squirrels and the like she tries to chase.

Eventually Carl makes enough to quit his current job and take Donut hiking for content.

We still can have Donut and Carl meeting their friends. Maybe the Meadow Lark crew is outside and see Carl walking Donut and they get know each other from there. Carl gets new friends and Donut has some many more people to pet her!

On a trip into the dungeon, Donut bolts off and finds baby Mongo, a bird of prey chick that has fallen out of the nest and broken a wing. She decides this her baby now. She’s very displeased when the rehab people Carl calls take Mongo away.

Katia gets met via online (look the cats silly adventures make her feel better through this awful time in her life) and eventually in person on a trip where Carl films Donut hiking in other countries.

Baptista send a fan mail package that has silver vine and catnip teas for Car and Donut with every clear instructions on how to prepare them. Carl says this the only tea he has ever liked.

Mordecai is a veteran living in the same building as Carl. He and his brother went into the military to pay for college. He gets to study fungi. He kinda adopts Carl as a little sibling/cousin. He occasionally will go on the hiking with them and he will point out what mushrooms are and are not safe for human and animal consumption.

Odette is still a talk show host. And she has them on the show a couple of times. She gives solid advice about how to deal with the fame and money.

Beatrice is furious that Carl is being a successful pet influencer. And when all of her atrocities come to light, oh that does not look good for her.

AI is being creepy in the comments about Carl’s bare feet of course.

One theme in DCC that I've been rolling around in my brain for weeks now is "If you were always doomed, does the love matter?"

Li Jun is one of the most obvious examples, he is saved by (and saves) Carl multiple times, and it doesn't matter because he dies on the ninth floor, right before the chance for freedom. What did it mean for Li Jun to struggle so much, only to die? Does the extra time with his sister and best friend outweigh all the pain and suffering he went through? Would it have been kinder to let him and his family die?

Annie's the other obvious one, the tragedy wasn't that Annie was sick and dying it's that she was denied the comfort of dying with someone who loved her! She was never going to live but the love that Katia gave her was real! Does it matter if it couldn't change anything? If Annie was only ever going to break Katia's heart should she have loved her in the first place?

The crawlers on the fifth floor as well, especially Langley and company, was it worth it to fight so hard to get off the fifth floor only to die early on the sixth? What does it mean if the second they gain confidence and purpose they just die? Was it worth it? Was it worth the struggle and pain?

If all of Signet's memories of her family are fake, if her whole family is fake, does her love still matter? Does her pain? Her hatred? Should she still fight for them?

Was Donut's love for Bea wasted? Do the moments of love and companionship between them mean nothing now because of Bea's betrayal? Were the moments between them fake even? If Bea had never taken Donut, Dount would never have met Carl, but is that they only thing she would lose?

What of Yvette? A girl born into a shitty family, who struggled and suffered to grow up only to die horribly and painfully and young. Would it have been kinder if she just died in the collapse?

Would it be better if Carl's mom never took him to the circus? Is it tarnished by the heartbreak that came after? Was suicide really the only way?

And the series over and over and over just goes: No! This is the only thing that matters! There will always, always, always be suffering and tragedy and heartbreak and death and you have to wrench joy and love and community from a world that wants to deny them to you! If you're doomed matter how hard you fight to survive then fight like hell anyway! Love even if it only leads to heartbreak! We can see these tragedies and call them unjust and fight for a better future but even if we never reach better the fight alone is worth it!

Mercury is the most charismatic substance in the universe. Like, there are a lot of things that historical scholars have been wrong about, but you usually understand why; flawed hypotheses, inadequate measuring tools, half-truths, secondary factors that muddy the results. But people across Eurasia saw that shit and just assumed it must be the key to immortality, despite a mercury tonic being literally the opposite of an immortality potion. And they kept trying it despite all obvious evidence. Taoists burned through emperors like lab rats. No other metal has this much rizz

The reason for that is mercury poisoning making people feel a sense of bliss and certainty before it starts fucking their organs up. Givingthe dying emperors a liquid metal drink that makes them feel like they are smart enough to transcend the limits of humanity before it fucking kills them sounds like a peak mythological trial and it appears that the ones who died were just not worthy. They just had to keep trying to find that one person who will turn immortal from the sweet metallic nectar, they knew it would happen eventually.

Also mercury allegedly tastes sweet (I can't clarify this because I'm not on that immortality grindset) and it was probably also given as a pain management because your head can't hurt if your pain receptors get fucked by mercury. So beside seeking immortality we had to accept it was basically shiny lean for rich people. We are living in an age where people are smoking lithium batteries with nicotine called vapes so we can't diss them for this. Humanity loves ingesting poison if its sugar flavoured and gets you high, that's our main theme beside setting shit on fire and throwing things
