Asexuality in Sailor Moon

In the manga, Rei Hino (Sailor Mars) was depicted as not being interested in sex and as having a distaste for men. Not so in the original anime, their version Rei is very much interested in pursuing relationships with boys. Rei’s arc in the manga meant a lot to me as someone who identifies as asexual. There was a chapter that focused on Rei feeling confused and insecure that everyone around her constantly talked about romance, specifically romance with boys, when she herself wasn’t interested in kissing men, or pursuing a sexual relationship at all. A villain took advantage of this and tried to convince her she had to kiss a guy and get into a relationship with him, even if she wasn’t interested in sex or men, so she could fit in and be “taken care of”.  Rei fought off the monster, asserting her confidence in her identity. In another story, she told her friends she didn’t need a relationship, and she was content with having allies who shared her purpose. The text didn’t specifically say Rei was an aromantic/non-heteromantic asexual, but Rei’s story is the closest I’ve seen to solid exploration of the struggles of an asexual person in popular media. The fact that the point of Rei’s story is about the overcoming the pressure on her to be hetero-normative, and the fact it ends with her being happy and comfortable with her identity and with her disinterest in both boys and sex- these things were great to me. So I really want to see Rei’s identity and story represented in the new anime, not erased like it was in the original.

As someone who actually has romanced every LI in Dragon Age for the sake of completion and exploring every part of the stories, let me just say that not romancing that character you don’t like is valid as fuck. No, you don’t have to do it just because. 

Hell, people who have played the games only with a certain LI are still valid.

People who who have no interest in the romance aspects at all are still valid.

Just a reminder that Xena doesn’t belong in the “queerbaiting” category. In the later seasons, the writers and producers did everything they could to get around the network’s censorship to show us that Xena and Gabrielle were together. Ask pretty much anyone from the cast and crew today and they will say the same thing.

There is a difference between “queerbaiting” and “doing everything you possibly can to get queer representation passed the censors, network and/or studio, thus forcing you to get fucking creative.” 

Queer coding has been a part of queer media for ages, usually pushed and pioneered by queer people for queer people in order to have something when the alternative would be nothing. Yes, now queer communities are seen as a a valid and exploitable demographic but that was most definitely not always the case, and in the past queer and queer ally creators have done amazing work creating things they could sneak right under the noses of their conservative and homophobic audiences and bosses. 

Even now, actually, it’s often frankly unclear how much actual freedom writers or other creators really have when bigger companies are in the picture, and it’s very possible that example of “queerbaiting” are not at all the fault of people directly involved with the project but rather indicative of those people doing their best to push boundaries where they can against implied or explicit mandates not to. 

So, before slinging around the “queerbating” like a buzzword, please remember your queer history, and also keep in mind even today who often really holds the power behind various media. It really can’t be overstated how much actors, writers, directors, and even show runners are–in the scheme of a massive production company–on the lowest rungs of the ladder. 

And so yeah: Xena isn’t queerbaiting; it’s maintaining plausible deniability so that they could actually get what could on the air.

So any show or series before could and should be considered either queercoding, or a form of queerfanservice. —>Like Xena, shows which had to use subtext to tell the story they wanted to tell, because the top people did not want to go there.

Also, when it comes to creative things? There really is no “better”.

Sure, someone might be more technically accomplished than you - you might not be able to colour as nicely or craft a sentence that rings as poetically - but art is only really secondarily about that. It’s firstmost about what you, uniquely, have to express, and how the precise way you express it might be what others need to relate to it - even if it’s less flashy, less “beautiful”, and gets fewer notes.

I promise you this: there are obscure fanfics with only a handful of notes that are the read-and-re-read favourites of someone too anxious to comment. There are drawings done by 14-year-olds in poorly-blended markers that are someone’s favourite because they spoke to something that nothing else did. There are covers of songs where your voice cracks and you cringe every time you hear it but someone thinks the way it cracked just at that moment added beauty to the song. There are angsty three-line poems you wrote at 4am that someone once called “pretentious emo trash” that are loved by someone else going through the same thing as you.

And I guarantee you, there is something unique about your art. Even if you’re “saying something someone else has said”. Even if you’re the thousandth person to take on the subject. Even if you feel like you’re not at all unique. You’re bound to express something, however subtle, that didn’t exist until then.

Art is about connection. And the more you create, the more chance you have of finding other people who experience the world the way you do.

Patron saint of D&D parties

So fun story about this weeks D&D session: My players are rooting out an old fort filled with bandits led by a minotaur barbarian, dragonborn sorcerer and a human dark palladin.

After reaching the top floor they get ambushed by gargoyles previously summoned by the sorcerer(spoiler alert: it involved lots of fluffy bunnies).

After they cleared out the stony bastards I decided to mess with them.

I showed them a weeping angel.

Except it was a fake, just a regular statue.But it was in the classic weeping angel pose: hands before the face. Que the party leader(a dwarf fighter) saying: look the patron saint of our party.

Rest of the party and me(DM): Huh, why?

Personally I headcanon that tiefling magic starts to manifest around puberty, but if that wasn’t the case, they’d just have to suck it up and tiefling baby-proof the hell out of the place. B) Have no vases and stuff that might fall over and break during tremors. Have sturdy furniture. Lock doors and windows. Avoid having open flames around. Shove cotton or something into your ears.

Oh yeah, and some of the babies might in that case be able to cast friends, minor illusion, ray of frost, or mage hand. Could result in chaos…

I’ve been tagged by @smileyonthewall​ so let’s get this show on the road.

Are you named after anyone? Nope. Hell my parent’s only knew what they wanted to name me not long before I was born.

When was the last time you cried? About 2 months ago. When I was in a really really dark place mentally and emotionally speaking.

Do you have any kids? Nope. Want kids in the future though. But that would require me to first fall in love with someone who loves me back. which is a struggle on it’s own seeing how I almost never truly develop feelings for someone.Hell so far I’ve actually and fully/truly fallen in love 3 times in my life. Add to the fact that even if I manage it, the relationship will never last since research has shown that people like me have a hard/near impossible time to find/keep/maintain romantic relationships and the chance for me to ever have kids in the future becomes real small. Plus everywhere on the internet I read stories about how bad it was dating autistic people and so far I've met 3 people who dating an autistic person and hated it. One even going so far to proclaim to never date autistic people again.

So do I have kids? No. Do I want them? Yes. Will I ever have a chance at kids?Zero is a chance right?

Do you use sarcasm a lot? I think I use it more than average. To be fair, both my parents and my little brother can be quite sarcastic so I’ve kinda grew up in a sarcastic/smart mouthed house.

What’s the first thing you notice about people? I think their face? That or their clothes or the entire person at once.

Eye color? Blue. A very bright/light colour of blue considering my darker hair colour.

Scary movie or happy ending? Both? Both. Both is good.

Any special talent? HAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!! Nope. I got nothing worthwhile talent or skill wise to speak of. I got nothing to speak of. I thought I could sing but that was a huge forking mistake. All the poetry and song lyrics I wrote are pure trash when looking back at them. Nope I got nothing special to make me of any use/value/make me equal/measure up to the normal people.

Where were you born? In a hospital in the South-Eastern province of The Netherlands, by  Cesarean section 4 weeks to early with a growth deficiency of 8 weeks Although some definitions define a  Cesarean section to not being a birth so by that definition I was never “born” at all.

Hobbies? Singing, reading, watching series, watching anime, violin, guitar, Historical European Martial Arts, Dungeons and Dragons, Magic the Gathering, gaming, hanging out with friends/roommates.

Do you have any pets? Nope. My mom has a cat. Does that count? When I live on my own I’ll probably get a cat though.

What sports do you/have played? I have played many a sport in my time. Judo, Karate, Horseback riding, Jujitsu, Gymnastics, Historical European Martial Arts. At the moment I’m not really doing any sports. Unless you count the weekly swimming I do with smileyonthewall​ and my roommates

How tall are you? 1,75-1,76 meters depending on which document you use.

Favorite subject in school? I didn’t have a single favorite subject. I liked Dutch(sucked at the grammar though XD), English, Biology, Physics, Music, Chemistry(even though I liked it I never managed to be quite good at it no matter how much/hard I studied. Guess I just lacked the right chemistry XD)

Dream job? It used to be doctor or  paediatrician. Then it became of scientific researcher/laboratory worker. Nowadays it’s a toss up between laboratory worker or teacher. Although I’m scared to try cause I’m pretty sure I’d suck at teaching. Welp that was it. Unless @smileyonthewall tags me for some more questions.
