So glad someone submitted this, because MY GOD... You know how this arc, Gillion constantly talks about how Chip picked him up, how he saved him by doing that, like over and over again? Meanwhile, this is the equivalent of that moment for Chip that he keeps coming back to as well... I just think it's super sweet of them to keep coming back to these core memories of each other in more heart-to-heart moments....

just finished riptide 116 and its my new favorite. Its so emotional, and the relationship between Arlin and chip is so wholesome. Chip my shayla he has it so hardd like give him a break. The way he handles grief and forgetting himself. GAH. everything about it tugs at my heartstrings, especially because ive always liked chip!! I want to maybe make a riptide 116 comic in the future

All of the dialogue is so well done. The writing is phenomenal. The combat is amazing. I definetly want to return to it again. Its not too heavy and also made me laugh. The fish and chips undertones went crazy. Gayboys doom the plot fr. Genuinely i dont know what to say except i will be thinking about this for a long time. Wow.

I am lucky enough to have started riptide back in september so i didnt have to wait for the hiatus, but even still what a WAY to have came back.

Gillion, Jay Aurora

I didn't talk about the melody for the others, but for Chip I really have to since Holding On Where I Am Able is what cemented my decision to put Chip as Zephyrus.

When I think about Chip, no matter the moment in time, this is what I hear in my mind. If we could inspect his soul, below all the jokes and pranks, all the insecurity and fear, this melody is what would show up.

There's something so overly sweet about it, so nostalgic and sad, but also so comforting. Feels like a crying kid calling for his parents, a young adult reminiscing about playing on the sand, sitting with his feet in the fresh water under the warm sun...

Then of course, Zephyrus is about vulnerability, about opening up after all that's happened, about growing again.

Soap is the journey of someone who's learning to be accepted again, who's finally found a community, a family.

Every single lyric is very clear so I don't think is worth explaining it all but I definitely want to bring attention to these lines because they hit like a fucking train every time.

Eventually, after they get Gillion back and the whole crew comes together to set their goals and promise each other to achieve them despite all hardships, to not give up on one another again. Chip realizes he has found a new family.

Zephyrus original meaning is more oriented towards wanting to find a place, to find people again, people who you can love and will love you back, as well as that yearn for vulnerability, to be yourself once more.

But I added this song after Soap since I also interpret it as Chip's admiration for Gillion and Jay.

A couple times he talks about how he considers Jay the most intelligent of them, he sees her as reliable and trustworthy. Similarly, he considers Gillion to be a hero, to be strong, brave, loyal and well- we know what he thinks of Gill, (the allegaytions).

But about himself? "I'm not a hero, I'm not a friend, I'm not a father, I'm not even a real pirate". He considers himself nothing, and constantly seeks people and their validation to compensate for everything he's not...But he is!!! He learns and grows so fast.

Chip is a leader. He becomes reliable and strong, he's kind to kids and he's loyal to his people. He's strong and brave, he stops running away and he's now willing to self sacrifice for others.

The whole song makes me think of the Black sea arc and everything that has happened to Chip since then. This song is the last one of the last album, so it carries a sad feeling for me, but also somewhat hopeful.

Half of this song is purely instrumental music, which I find fitting since I think a lot of Chip's conflicts happen very internally, very deeply and he just keeps burying them, or did at some point, leaving him now where he is.

Him getting rid of the memory of killing someone, never telling the others about Price, using the bracelets to communicate instead of talking, keeping things "until the right moment", always delaying things. And it's not about whether it's right or wrong, it's about holding on, it's about trying to protect now that he has something (or someone) to protect.

I once mentioned some things about his deal and his relationship with death in another post that I'd like to bring back, so read it if you're interested :) (and shoutout to @willemdaflutist too!).

Special mention from Theseus:

The song is very straight forward with Theseus' story, with only one twist: it answers the question, "is it the same ship if every piece has been replaced?".

Chip has grown so much, he has learned to love and be loved. But after all that he's been through, I think the doubt is there "am I even the same person?" And maybe he isn't, but he's still fighting for his family, and he's been doing it all along, isn't it?
