So we have to take into account the context of the scene when we first learn about Navy (ignoring AvA 12 for now) this is the ONLY time we actually see Navy as a character - in the finale he only shows up to contrast him against King (i.e. to show how the love King has for Purple is parental and the reason they need it is because Navy WASN'T THEIR FOR THEM WHEN THEIR MOTHER DIED.)
The only time we EVER see Navy as a character is when Purple is explaining their backstory to Green. They're venting and explaining why they act so horribly to people they care about even though it fundamentally goes against what Purple themselves believes. And they SPECIFICALLY MENTION the fact that Navy is abusive.
The only time Purple ever mentions their father and the only thing Purple thinks to mention about him (despite the fact that they still desire his love) is the fact that he pushed boundaries, threatened physical abuse, and walked out and didnt come back when Purple needed him.
ADDITIONALLY ADDITIONALLY.
How long is it spent with just Purple and Orchid? Its gleamed over quick, but I do think it's a necessary detail, Purple doesn't consider Navy an option UNTIL Orchid dies, and suddenly, they're alone in the world. I know it looks quick for us, but in the time spent, Orchid at least had the time to fully develop a terminal illness and get to the point of passing away, at the very least that would be a few months right?
And now we can acknowledge AvA 12 because BOY DO I HAVE THOUGHTS.
So you people are aware that abusers are able too (and very often do) commit acts that are deemed helpful or loving or caring to their victims? Like this is so common in fact that it has its own name (lovebombing). Now theres no evidence of lovebombing specifically from Navy, but what their IS is the fact he at least attempts to have his family walk out of Newgrounds relatively unharmed (and he does such a shit job at it that Im shocked that people deem this redemption worthy but I digress)
Navy helping his family during a terrorist attack isn't him secretly being good. Sure I see an argument that Newgrounds potentially was a catalyst of him becoming abusive? Theres definitely a compelling argument in that. But in my mind (and through personal experience) if Navy used the fact Newgrounds made him lash out the way he did then I dont think it was Newgrounds, I think he always had hate in his heart and he just lost the patience to be able to hide it.
Basically, what I'm trying to say is that there isn't a UNIVERSE where Navy isn't abusive.
