I know for a fact I’ve told this story on here before but I’ll never get over the time when I was working retail and I was cashing out some lady so I asked “cash, debit or credit how are you paying, ma’am?” And she said “that’s none of your business.” And demanded to speak to my manager about my invasive question
all i want is you and a room full of fairylights.
Hey. LIVING COSTS MONEY! How about giving more money to the companies that employ me and MAYBE I MIGHT BE OK
This is such a funny thing to me because in Thai culture, it’s completely normal to live with your parents when you’re an adult. In fact, most people live in their family home until they’re married ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Saaaame in Pakistan dude and being abroad for grad school is really fucking me up I am not built to be even slightly independent 😂
In Western culture (including America!) it was completely normal for people to live with their parents in adulthood–sometimes until they married, sometimes longer. In America, that changed (for men) in the 1940s and 50s, when it was really really easy for an 18 year old to get a good job that paid more than enough to live a comfortable life on, or to afford college which would then practically guarantee you an even better-paying job. Women joined the trend of moving out at 18 in the 1960s and 70s.
And now those jobs don’t exist, or are few and far between, and guess what! People are living with their parents again. But that 70-year span was just long enough that it fell out of common memory, and now people are seen as “failures” because the economics have changed.
A very great deal of Western culture, ESPECIALLY America, is actually still based on a memory of the 40′s and 50′s as the baseline of normalcy despite them being a total fluke at the time. World War II and McCarthyism created a massive shift towards rabid patriotism, Christian fundamentalism and the ideal of the “nuclear family” that resembled nothing before it and we’re still recovering from as the majority of our most powerful politicians are old enough that this period of sudden fanaticism is their “nostalgic good old days” and the way they think things are “supposed to be.”
I love when these posts randomly become tiny history lessons, it soothes me
to me, one of the weirdest things about our economy right now is the credential inflation
like my dad got a job as a mechanic when he graduated high school, and he was employed with a high school diploma to a full time job with a union, and had health insurance and benefits.
at this point, I have graduated from high school, have a Bachelor’s degree, have a Master’s Degree, have two years of experience working in my field, and am a due paying member of multiple professional organizations. And that qualifies me to compete in a two-stage interview process for a part time job that offers no health care.
This is what decades of stripping the working class of their rights looks like.
Climate change is not that complicated! (h/t)
also!!! just because i don’t understand something well enough to explain it in sparkling detail doesn’t mean it isn’t real!!! THATS WHY THEY INVENTED SCIENTISTS
a note on wish fulfilment
y’know, the more I think about it, the more I feel that the real reason so many men object to women writing self-indulgently awesome, so-called “Mary Sue” characters is because deep down, they think that women ought to fantasise about being worthy of a powerful, exceptional, amazing man, and not about being powerful, exceptional, amazing themselves, so that even when those female characters do end up with spectacular dudes, they literally cannot fathom it happening in a context where the relationship is of equal or lesser narrative importance than the woman’s awesomeness, or where the guy is presented as being worthy of her, instead of the other way around
because there’s literally so much media where the beautiful, disinterested woman has to eat crow and realise she was wrong, that the boring everyman who secretly pines for her really is someone she wants to be worthy of, and even when the story frames it as “guy proves his worth to girl”, it’s never in terms of acknowledging what she wants and adapting his behaviour or approach to fit her desires - it’s always about some random event or lightbulb moment allowing her to realise that he was awesome all along, and him being gracious enough to forgive her for not realising it sooner
but stories where the woman is extraordinary from the outset, and knows it, and the guy has to show himself to be genuinely attentive and exceptional in order to earn her affections, only those affections were never guaranteed because we’re in her perspective and she doesn’t think of herself as the hero’s reward because she’s the hero? some dudes just cannot fucking handle it, and so they say it’s a bad concept from the outset because that’s easier than admitting that they don’t want to identify with an awesome male character if the female characters are still allowed to express preferences beyond him.
this goes hand in hand with the think i’ve been having that manic pixie dream girls and mary-sues are two sides of the same coin, but one exists for the use of men whereas the other exists to be her own character. however, both are often quirky, exoticized, unlikely, and highly romantically/sexually desired character types. it just so happens that the pixies are tolerated because the male blank slate/reader finds all those qualities desirable and imprintable, whereas he cannot imprint upon a mary-sue
A VERY EXCELLENT POINT, HOLY SHIT
THANK YOU FOR THIS ADDITION
The thing that always gets me is how we still frame the idea of trying to be a good caring person as a huge laborious inconvenient inherent sacrifice instead of deeply comforting and rewarding and beneficial to one’s own self and a fundamental human need. Like joke really is on us, the loneliness of modern life is not mysterious.
Brain: I don’t wanna write anymore. I wanna read something.
Me: Alright, I guess we could do that for a bit. What do you wanna read?
Brain: Don’t know. Wanna read.
Me: There’s a lot to choose from. How about this?
Brain: No. Not that. I wanna read a thing that fits these exact specifications.
Me: Uh, alright, wow. Those are really exact specificatio-
Me: …
Me: Are you telling me you want to read the exact thing we were writing?
Brain: YES! I wanna read that. Let’s read that.
Me: …
Me: I don’t know how to tell you this, but we have to write it first.
I’m reading the first chapter of my Ichthyology book for homework and so far my favorite quote is:
“Humans are not the pinnacle of evolutionary progress but only an aberrant side branch of fish evolution.”
me, 21 years old: *still kinda lookin around for cool sticks and odd looking rocks that might reveal latent magical powers*
Me, 35 years old: *finds a cool stick on my walk to work* I’m Gandalf.
