"Not everything that matters is profound."

How strange it is to wake up, check the news, see the world burning down… and still have to go to work, answer texts, be a person. Do what you can. That’s enough. It really is.
The world is always burning somewhere. You just happen to be in an era when you have dozens of media companies making big money on broadcasting it to the world at large. Almost none of it matters to you and is just mental dead weight, something that neither affects, nor can be affected by you.
[D]o not let us begin by exaggerating the novelty of our situation. Believe me, dear sir or madam, you and all whom you love were already sentenced to death before the atomic bomb was invented…It is perfectly ridiculous to go about whimpering and drawing long faces because the scientists have added one more chance of painful and premature death to a world which already bristled with such chances and in which death itself was not a chance at all, but a certainty. If we are all going to be destroyed by an atomic bomb, let that bomb when it comes find us doing sensible and human things—praying, working, teaching, reading, listening to music, bathing the children, playing tennis, chatting to our friends over a pint and a game of darts—not huddled together like frightened sheep and thinking about bombs. They may break our bodies (a microbe can do that) but they need not dominate our minds.
-- C. S. Lewis
"Oh, you know the sort of thing if you read the papers a lot," said Ponder. "I seriously think they think that it's their job to calm people down by first of all explaining why they should be overexcited and very worried." "Oh, I know they do that," said Glenda. "How would people get worried if they weren't told how to be?"
-- Terry Pratchett, Unseen Academicals
"My point is, there’s always something. I think, as a species, we have a desire to believe that we’re living at the climax of the story. It’s a kind of narcissism. We want to believe that we’re uniquely important, that we’re living at the end of history, that now, after all these millennia of false alarms, now is finally the worst that it’s ever been, that finally we have reached the end of the world.”
-- Emily St. John Mandel, Sea of Tranquility
“What an age! Every one is dying, everything is dying, and the earth is dying also, eaten up by the sun and the wind. I don’t know where I get the courage to keep on living in the midst of these ruins. Let us love each other to the end.”
-- George Sand to Gustave Flaubert, 1870
Insist on believing that good will prevail; that the work will get done; that there will again be love. We have to want to get up in the morning for the good mornings to arrive.
-- Tennessee Williams, in Follies of God
"You don't know me. I'm not the same person anymore."
"That's okay. I'll get to know you again."
has anyone figured out how to turn off the thing where you love your pet so much it slides inexorably into grief-borrowing
“For me this glass is already broken. I enjoy it; I drink out of it. It holds my water admirably, sometimes even reflecting the sun in beautiful patterns. If I should tap it, it has a lovely ring to it. But when I put this glass on the shelf and the wind knocks it over or my elbow brushes it off the table and it falls to the ground and shatters, I say, ‘Of course.’ When I understand that the glass is already broken, every moment with it is precious.”
You can’t Abstain your way to a Better World.
The Burger still gets made, even if you go Vegan. If you don’t buy it, it just winds up in the trash. If you want to do something meaningful about waste, you need legislation: It must become a crime to waste food in those ways.
If you care about Animal Cruelty in Factory Farms, you need to get legislation passed. It must become a crime to mistreat animals in those ways, and when malfeasances occurs, the onus of responsibility for those crimes must fall upon wealthy shoulders. That, also, requires legislation. It requires regulations, and regulators.
The largest source of Microplastics is wear and tear on automobile tires. It doesn’t matter what brand of shampoo you buy. It doesn’t matter which company you support with your dollar. The issue of Public Transit is too large-scale to be handled at anything less than the municipal level.
It’s not enough to just not participate in society
If you want the world to Change, you must leverage the mechanisms of political power.
You need Government.

thank god Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton came together to make a PSA about the dangers of fake news
I do often think about how the origin of “he would not fucking say that” was in reference to a post which depicted Cartman SouthPark responding politely when asked for his pronouns
meme phrases are so mobile and versatile and that's really really beautiful but i'm always thinking about the first "she x on my y til i z" being "she ebbin on my neezer til i scrooge" and the first "fork found in kitchen" coming from a tweet about sehun from exo being spotted at a gay bar. like sometimes you just utterly nail it the very first time and no variation of the joke is going to be better.
EXACTLY.

"The horrors persist but so do libraries, books, iced coffee, sunsets, trees, the word 'fuck', the moon and the sea."
The creature that wants to kill you will not growl.
The function of a growl is as a warning. It is a communication that violence is available as a tool, but is not preferred. Other outcomes, besides your death, are available and should be considered.
But the creature that wants to kill you will not growl.
If your death is the goal, then growling will only serve as a delay and may result in your escape, which runs counter to the goal. There will be no growl, no warning. There will be no snarl or hiss or bluster. The creature that bares its teeth with the intent to kill only does so to bring closer its fangs to your demise.
The creature that growls does not want to kill you, but will if it must.
I advise you to appreciate the warning. You may not receive another.
#writing#I’m way more terrified of an animal looking at me the way I look at baklava than I am of growling and snarling#grace makes art
so glad i checked the tags on this one

with faith and perseverance, one day we will sauté the horrors

I have finally identified my only two braincells.
In 3d video games at least, objects that clip like this bump around and make so much noise because they are gaining speed as they rapidly cut between being pushed and pulled by the surface's collision box. These objects can possess immense speed even if they look relatively stationary.
Touching the chair may well result in releasing this enormous amount of confined speed into your body, which is a fun way to meet the dev team.
#well now i gotta forever use meet the dev team as a euphamism for dying
